Don't base >your opinion on an animated series that he knew nothing about >nor had any control over when they were made. I agree. I've borrowed the first part of the animated series out of the library, and was very pleased... with the animation. I truly enjoyed how all of the characters were drawn, and it was nicely realistic. I felt that the animation kept in tune with the drawings that were on the covers of the first books. However, the problem that I had with the whole animated series is that they skipped over many of the small parts of the books that I enjoyed. I seem to recall that the part that I borrowed covered Lords of the Ring 1 and half of 2. Not only did it end strangely (but I suppose in a cliff hanger like tv series shall do), but, as I said before, left out a good deal of the small intricacies that made up the books that I had enjoyed reading. --- David Browley wrote: >Hi everyone, I'm new here, but thought I would throw in my two coppers >about the art thing. I do enjoy it, but I know >what Darkwind looks like to me, and its not how he's drawn or painted. >Use your imagination! Hi David, welcome; glad that you could join us :). I agree with you. There are only a few times when I refer to the cover art to see what a character looks like, and those are when I feel that the author didn't do a good job in 'drawing' that character with their words. I do enjoy the books that I have found that have a very limited amount of people on the cover, or none at all (ie. some of Laurel Hamilton's works). When I am the one who decides exactly what a char looks like (for the small stuff that an author doesn't go into), then said character seems more tangible to me. However, I alos agree with others on the list that if you are to do a close-up of a character, at least get the hair/eye color correct. Clothing... unless absurd, then I would say that that is up to the artist :). --- Shantaya wrote: >But how long is a candlemark? Is it as long as "our" hour? There are few authors (from my interpretation, at least) that will try to modify their world that much. Many of the books that I have read have dealt with a world in which it is felt, though not stated, that time is the same. It is one of those things that relate easier to the reader. Take into consideration that our version of an hour consists of the rotating motion of the second hand on a clock. One complete cycle represents one minute. Therefore, you need 60 complete cycles to create one hour, which is represented by one complete cycle of the minute hand. On our world and using our clocks, one complete cycle of the hour consists of twelve hours; two cycles consists of twenty-four, or one whole day. If you take a look at our world, the evolution of technology (technology, mind you) required the development of a clock that used gears and springs (this needed for navigational purposes). If you go from that end, then you would say that any other-worldly clocks that are developed the same as ours and yet must represent shorter hours, then they would have to either have shorter (or longer) seconds. There may be more reasons, but I would have to get even more technical than I already have *g*. Now, on the flip side, many fantasy worlds are based upon a system of magic, and in a few worlds, the people therein have the off-chance of being able to tell the exact time (a magical ability). This would mean that you could reach past the stage of navigation without having to depend on clocks (which, btw, are how in the early days one was able to tell longitude). They could simply reach out with their senses and note if there was any danger in the waters (reefs, etc.). It could also be entirely possible to set up magical 'beacons' that each had their own signal, thus telling the navigator of the ship exactly where they were located. To get back on track *g*, this means that you wouldn't have to reinvent exactly how an hour differs from our own ;). Then again *g*, as Ty wrote, perhaps it only represents a half-hour, thus simply side-stepping this issue entirely *g*. --- The Lady Sunhawk declared: >Oh yeah, and I figured out a Hawkbrother hairstyle--I braided a small >section of my hair and twisted silver wire strung with crystal beads >round the braid, ending it in a feather. Even now that I am older there are times I just want to hang with someone and can not find anyone free. Of course my work schedule being opposite from normal peoples (11pm-7am) leads to a lot of time spent alone. I have my 4 cats for company and lots and lots and lots of books. But there are times that just does not cut it. Everyone gets lonely or depressed at times, like Sam told you, it does pass. E-mail some of your list-sibs off list and make friends with them. It seems like most of us have more in common than just Misty and we can talk about more than just Misty books in private e-mail. Please do not flame me- I love talking about the books, but at times I want to talk about more stuff and not have to label it fluff. Cheer up lovey- things will get better. They are epic in their own way and they are really good books. I recommend reading them to everyone on the list, if you haven't already. > I have read those too, they are grrreaaat!!! I am now reading The Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan. I am on the first book, Eye of the World. It took a while to get it from the library, I had to reserve it and then it took several weeks. Please no spoilers, I am only on chapter 4, so far I like it. ******************************************************************** Songwynd Wolfsong wrote: > Shana, in WoF, Vanyel when he appeared to the gryphons, Elspeth, > Darkwind, Firesong, Nyara, Skif and Need...it said "I am still in the > service of the Goddess and Valdemar" It may be the Star-Eyed or the > "Children of Her Other Self" Actually, it would be her "Other Self" She referred to Roald and his companion as the children of her other self. I, personally, believe that it is a statement that in the end all Gods are one. It is just another aspect that each group worships. ******************************************************************** I tried to read the Black Cauldron, after a few chapters discovered I was totally lost. After I read the Wheel of Time Series, I will try again. maybe my mindset was not right at the moment for that book. I noticed at the library when I picked up Black Cauldron, that there were several books by that same author, but no chronological list. Does anyone know in which order they should be read? I would appreciate it. ******************************************************************** About depression, I definitely understand. I was unemployed from the last of February 'til first of October. I felt so useless. I believe that my previous employer was blackballing me (telling untrue things to prospective employers who would call for a reference). When my unemployment ran out, I finally went to a temp agency. I worked a few "short- term" assignments a day here a couple of days there. I had been resisting the assignment I am now working, hoping to get one a little closer to home. (I am working about 30 miles from home now) I do see the light at the end of the tunnel. I am working no farther from home than the job I lost, and making $1.50 more per hour. I will be learning a useful skill, that I can use elsewhere if this doesn't work out. Plus I am now planning on building my new system myself. I mean actually putting all the boards and other inner workings in the tower. I may start doing this for other people as well, for a little bit of extra spending $. Buying all the parts and doing it myself will save me approx. $1500. on the cost of my system. ******************************************************************** I am busy working on my web page. I am doing it off-line and will upload it soon. Right now the only thing there is my under construction page. The URL is. http://members.tripod.com/~AuntySocial/index.html I will let everyone know when it is up and running.
