IIRC, Misty herself at D*Con explained that basically, she had slipped and had added healing in the next book. She explained it as: "Van upgraded to Van 1.1! or something like that if I remember what Korendil said at the time. Are you still there in the lurker woods, my brave Lord Kory? I know some other "mistyakes" have been discussed, and personally, I find that kind of thing annoying. When I am willing to read an author's work (never mind the fact that I am also paying to do so) and I am basically entering their world, and putting part of myself into the reading and the weaving of the story, I expect them to be *consistent*. And there are several discrepancies out there where Misty is concerned, and personally, I wish she was more careful. (I was outraged over Tindel in OBreakers becoming Tilden in Oathblood *g*). Or Savil's Companion Kellan being of a different gender in one of the main stories in Sword of Ice. Or... I am sure there are quite a few out there. Actually, does anyone have a list or is interested in contributing with suitable textevd? *g* If so, email me privately (eleonora-+AT+-infodynamics.com.uy), and I can put together a list. Who knows, they might be fewer than I imagine, and then I will have to eat my words ;). On another note, has anyone read Sky Trillium by Julian May? I bought it cause I have loved her other books (The Many Colored Land and its sequels, and the Galactic Milieu books which are awesome, IMO) and I am veeeeery disappointed so far. I am about halfway through and I feel like laughing at things which are supposedly serious (unless the book is a parody and I didn't realize), and I am also bored. If anyone has any comments, I'd love to hear them privately. Hmm..guess that's all from me for now. I guess Misty created Tremane to show us that you cannot paint the world in black and white. If you take a look around anybody has done both something good and something bad. There may be some individuals who are really evil or so good you can't stand it but still, they will have done something that was good or bad sometime during their life. What I want to say people have so many facets (sp?) that it is not so easy to classify them into good and bad. I think it depends on your viewpoint, on how you see them, on how they behave towards you. >From the Empires view, Tremane was the good guy who tried to conquer other on countries and let the Empire swallow them for their own benefit: the Imperial Law, the advanced technology, all the amenities the Empire had - they considered those things worth having. I'm at the beginning of Storm Rising now (first read) and in fact, I still have trouble seeing why the Empire should be so evil. But maybe that was just what Misty intended: let them think about why it would be bad for Valdemar / Karse to be conquered by the Empire. So, in my opinion, Misty gave us characters which were created after real life. I agree with you: I also prefer intelligent "bad guys". Makes it more difficult for the goodies to get rid of them! But I still like the facets in my "baddies". * * * * End of Probable SPoiler ********* FLUFF WARNING ******** All is quiet in the Great Hall of Mist except for the murmur of conversation and a strange *clank* sound now and then. Torell the Jester appears with a big fat grin on his face, climbs on a table ladden with Indian cuisine and squeaks for attention. "Today", he announces, "is a very special day. It's Shantaya's birthday and she wants to share it with you. *although she does not no it* " With a snip of his fingers the sprinkler system goes into action raining each listsib with his / her favorite sweet(s). Best of it: they don't stick to the clothes and don't attach to fluff (clothes' fluff, that is) or dirt or wool. "Well, at least, they don't stick to Oldbies' clothes", Torell murmurs, "the Newbies, well, ... they will get *SPLOSHED* soon enough so it will wash off." He is very pleased with himself until he remembers something veeeery important. Slapping his forehead several times he murmurs something. The group huddle around the depressed Elsa is suddenly in the middle of glittering snow-fall. SNow that is magically un-cold and dry but can be made into nice non-hurting snow-balls "Let's have a snow-ball fight!" Torell shouts and jumps down from the table. "Oh, and by the way, Shantaya would like to start a private e-mail conversation whenever you fell depressed, Elsa!" ****** END OF MEGA-FLUFF ********* ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 10:17:31 GMT From: "Kalen [One In Black]" <95662014-+AT+-mmu.ac.uk> To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: depression and Emailing off list Message-ID: <70A9404134F-+AT+-alnilam.mmu.ac.uk> Date sent: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 09:32:35 GMT From: "Tea'la S." >E-mail some of your list-sibs off list and > make friends with them. Is it just me? hmm... well, there were a lot of people travelling back, among them a kyree historian right? so, there must have been stories about firesong passed around, all ending in that mask... i suppose the artist just drew a human-shape with a wierd blob for aya wearing a thing on his head... darian _did_ mention the terrible artwork... more on owlflight... did justyn call a Final Strike on himself? there was this bit that he could not even summon enough power/strength to lift an apple, so where did he get that strength from? He wasn't even as strong as before, when he was a hedge-wizard. and if he did, then the wierd mage also called an FS in the shed(?) where darian fought him. why the hell would he do that? btw, is it just me, or did the book sound... juvenile? and darian's acceptance into k'Vala was just too... simple. Elspeth's and Skif's initiation as Wingsibs were "flashy" enough... why didn't Darian have to go through that memory bubble thing? it was just a handing of amulet and there, he was a hawkbrother.... huh? it was as if misty lost her touch or something... even the Winds ans Storm trilogies that everyone seems to hate didn't bother me much... but this... i shudder to pick up Owlsight... *~*~* End Spoiler *~*~* well.. someone wanted the characters to be more mundane and less genius-like... and darian and snowfire were somewhat less intimidating than firesong and co... i guess that's what you get when your main characters in a novel are less than extraordinary... complete boredom... i mean, it's relatively okay in a short story, but it just doesn't pack enough oomph in a novel... haven't you noticed that all novels tend to have main characters who were either geniuses or had extraordinarily good luck? enough ranting... mint sheep and fluffy towels to all newbies. for all those who are depressed, stressed, and totally crushed, here's some eucalyptus oil... i hear it's good for the clearing of mind and heart... ;) ( ) Wind to thy Wings <==+==> Shadowblade mindmate to Raul, Elven archer-mage of Fairgrove | | High Priestess of the Goddess of the Elves, and of OOPS | | Grand Dame of the Order of the Namers, Singer of Fire(Alto) | | Member of the Order of Unsung Heroes (Eldan, Eric, and Terenil!) | | Member of the Mistic Circle, Visit my Homepage ~> \/ http://members.tripod.com/~Shadowblade ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 21:29:47 +0700 From: Femmy Syahrani To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Tremane Message-ID: <3.0.1.32.19981117212947.0069674c-+AT+-pop3.melsa.net.id> At 12:21 17/11/98 GMT, you wrote: >Heyla, my dearest listsibs, > >Storm Series Spoiler Space !!! > >* > >* > >* > >* > >* > >* >Femmy wrote about Tremane: >>A "good" bad guy? But I still like the facets in my "baddies". The problem is, I don't think Tremane is a bad guy at all. He has a good heart, he cares about his people, and to me, that makes him a good guy. And yes, I think Misty intended him to be a many-faceted bad guy, but IMHO, she failed. Tremane is too good to be a bad guy. He's only on the wrong side of the war. I haven't read Storm Breaking, but I don't mind a spoiler (it'll be a loooong time till the Asian crisis is over and I can afford to buy books again). From what I pick up in the conversations here, is it true that Tremane switches sides to Valdermar and goes against the Eastern Empire? For many-faceted bad guys, I love Guy Gavriel Kay and Robert Jordan. END SPOILER Femmy ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1787 **********************************
