How do you join Queen's Own? My little brother or sister got into my room and I can't find my instructions anywhere. BAD little siblings. BTW, about the tragidy theory, we know how Laven's going to die but she's still writing it so that can't be the reason. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. I've only read the Velgrath books and the Elven books of Misty's and I'm trying to decide what other books to read of hers. What would ya'll recomend? Is Firesong in the Owl books? Well, I finally got off my tush and decided to write something. Do you know that this is approx. a year for me? And I ~STILL~ feel like a newbie!! One Firedance k'Treva wrote: > I've only read the Velgrath books and the Elven > books of Misty's and I'm trying to decide what other books to read of > hers. What would ya'll recomend? Well, I know that I've really enjoyed both the 'Fire Rose' and 'Firebird', and from what I've seen of Tannim (only been able to get my sticky hands on 'Born to Run' and 'Chrome Cirle' as of yet, due to the fact that I'm more than broke (although I SHOULD get paid Fri ... please...) and because I have a whopping $28 fine on my library card) He's a mighty good read!! :) I have to say that I wasn't as fond of Eric, Beth and Kory, but Di Tregard's books are great. Espcially "Children of the Night." For anyone that cares - I FOUND MY COPY OF OATHBOUND!! woo hoo! it was under my bed with all the assorded junk, bunnies, 'lost' socks, and other assorted paraphenelia. As for the Hall, it's mainly whatever you want. The only permanent fixtures are the fountain, the hotsprings, and the OIB tents. And the shadowy cornres and nooks and things. :) *Yvonne sticks her tounge out at the lurkers - you know who you are!* On Tremaine: What I liked about him was that he had solid REASONS for what he did. He didn't just decide "Oh, today I think that I shall brutally abuse my people and take over the neighbouring kingdom beccause of a grudge that I have kept since they LAST stopped me, which was when I woke up one morning and decided to take them over but they rfused to lie down and die." [hoo - holy run-on. My appologies to those who study lit.] He invaded Karse because he thought that he was hlping them, as well as helping the Empire. Of course, there were personal gains to be gathered, but everyone has their flaws. Which makes for a much more interesting read. What I would like to see in a book one day was two completely likeable, rasonable people pitted against eachother in a war of some sort. Each with their rasons for wanting the other's head on a platter, but have them be LOGICAL reasons. When ads came out for Silence of the Lambs and they said his name, I got goose bumps. I did love Anthony Hopkins portrayal of Hannibal the Cannibal but, I really liked the prison setting in Manhunter (orig name The Red Dragon) much better. I did read the books, I don't remember much about The Red Dragon, but Silence of the Lambs is a good book, much more depth of character (I can't remember his name, that makes me angry--- the one who sends Clarice to meet with Hannibal) in the book his wife is dying of cancer, and it deals a lot with his emotional state. ************************************** Autumnleaf wrote: >I guess Misty created Tremane to show us that you cannot paint the world in black and white. Oh, foozle, I can't remember the name. But I read it! That's how the Frying Pan of Doom was inspired as my official Akane-defending weapon as a Knight of the True Fiancee. Anyway, it was good. There was a feathered serpent on the cover. I think it was the "Book of Enchantments" or something along those lines... Well, I just read The Black Gryphon, and (having read the other two last to middle O_o) I think -- I KNOW -- it's far and away the best in the trilogy! I love Amberdrake!! *adds him to the near top of her list* I also love Skan and Aubri, of course, and Gesten, Zhaneel, Cinnibar, Vikteren, Kechara and Urtho. Tamsin I like. Winterhart I tolerate at the beginning, but respect and admire and grow to like when you find out what she's up against. I love the picture Larry did of Aubri, the ever-tattered "flaming hero". However, the picture at the front of Amberdrake makes him look old AND I'm pretty sure it was in one of the other books. Kestra'chern are awesome. *sigh* I want one. Purely to massage my sore back muscles, you understand ...^_~ riiiiiiight....... *LOL* It's really nice to know more about the origin of the various magical creatures and the storms. Hertasi play a bigger role in this book than any other I've read, IIRC, and I like that. I've been thinking about Iftel, and I wonder, since Skan mentioned that Gryphons had no religion, if the ones there worship Vkandis because that's who was worshiped by the majority of the humans there with them. I also seem to remember it being said in another book that in Iftel ppl worshiped the Wind Lords, but I think that's less of a Mistyake than misinformation; after all, people are rather awed by gryphons (much to Skan's glee), the Lords of the Wind. *g* Maybe whoever said that was joking about that, but whoever overheard and spread it took it seriously. I dunno. ~~~~~~~~~~FLUFF~~~~~~~~~~ Elsa smiles at Sorana and the other Listees offering her support. "I feel better," she says, then accepts the chava Natha the Sassy Salamander floated over (who can no doubt slither with great dignity) with great enthusiasm {CHAVA!!!!!!!!!!!!}. She begins to sip the delicious drink, when suddenly, butterscotch balls and chocolate mint cookies and peanut buttery chocolate bars and sheep-shaped strawberry suckers rain down on her, like magic. Tucking as many of them as possible into her Hammerspace Pouch, she doesn't notice the exact moment the deluge of candy is replaced with glittering silvery-white snow, but when she does, she gasps in delight. "It's beautiful!" she exclaims, before busting into giggles at the sight of Torell the Jester being bombarded with his own generous gift. As the cries of "SNOWBALL FIGHT!" ring through the air, she quickly encapsules her cup of chava in a magic globe of never-spillage, tucking it, too, into her handy pouch. Before she could take cover, a charmingly bashful pooka presents her with flowers, pretty stones, and a large feather. She opens her mouth to thank him, but he scurries off before she has the chance. Smiling, she gently places these precious things into the pouch, then closes it and returns it to it's place in her sleeve. Standing up (partially), Elsa gathers up some snow and makes a large, loose-packed ball. She lobs it at the nearest target, Sorana, and dances out of the way of return volleys. She laughs and ducks for cover, gathering more "ammunition". ~~~~~~~~~~~END FLUFF~~~~~~~~~~~ If this isn't a testament to the effectiveness of all you Listsibs out there when you put it to yourselves to cheer someone up, I don't know WHAT is!!!! ^_^ Elsa Knight of Fluff, One in Black, Member of the Order of Drifting Ashes, OoUH Champion of Jonne, Moonbeam, and Iceshadow, caller of monsters Your world is as big as you make it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 22:33:21 -0500 (EST) From: AERDEN-+AT+-delphi.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Hammibal Lecter and Tremane, Message-ID: <01J4C2YJWFOI90TY1L-+AT+-delphi.com> On 18-NOV-1998 22:10:08.1 mercedes-lackey said to AERDEN me>AERDEN-+AT+-delphi.com wrote: me>Oooohhhh, Manhunter. Yes, that setting in the prison cage is the scene I'm remember the most, too. I was mentally exhausted by the time that little bit with Lecter ended. Talk about my spine crawling. The last time I felt that much of a reaction to a TV/film character was when I saw Jeremy Brett play Sherlock Holmes for the first time. That was an incredible experience. I felt the way I would have expected to feel after spending an hour with Holmes--like I'd been given a thorough mental workout. It was wonderful! Tremane makes me feel a lot the same--not so much mentally tired or whatever, but as if I have thoroughly been in his presence. Reading his scenes is intense for me, because I'm in his mind, knowing how he feels and why he makes the choices he does. I really do wish she would write an entire book about him. Smart evil guys only happen > in fiction. I'm not sure how true this is. I would venture to say that *with rare exceptions*, truly evil people, smart or stupid, only happen in fiction; Everyone else has some sort of rationale. They may be committed to killing those people that their gods (or God) tell them to kill, they may be completely insane, (in which case, can you call them evil or simply sick?) or they maybe striking out in some sort of mis-directed anger or revenge that we (as outsiders) might be unable to see. The point is, using Dirk's explaination of evil (Evil is that which cannot see a thing of beauty without wanting to possess or destroy it), it's very very hard to be completely evil all the time. Most people would have to come up with some sort of rationale for their actions. It could be as simple as greed or ambition, but can those be called evil? So, from the rambling discourse above, I'd guess that my point is (yes, I do have to guess at my own points) that while evil deeds can exist, evil people *with rare exceptions* do not. **************FLUFF**************** The young woman Zephyr shyly moves over to the hot springs, choosing an unoccupied corner, and slipping in quietly.
