It does mention that Talia limps, that she has heard (and sung) Kerowyn's Ride, and there are a few interesting descriptive tidbits about Dirk, but that's about all. Don't let the lack of info about Talia turn you off it, though; it is Kerowyn's story, after all, and it's one of my favorites of Misty's books. :) Actually, you'd really do better to read The Oathbound and Oathbreakers before By The Sword, since there are refs in BTS that you won't catch without having read them. But you can read it with or without them; By The Sword was the first book of Misty's that I read, and after it I kind of skipped around (Vows and Honor, The Mage Winds, The Last Herald-Mage, Arrows). Zha'hai'allav'a, Raven Darkblade, Holy Hand of the Goddess of Elves, Member of the Mistic Circle, Knight and Founding Member of the Order of Unsung Heroes, Advocator of Eldan, Champion of Kethra and Hyllarr, and Devotee of Maclyn; and Mor the raven, her familiar. abbykat-+AT+-hotmail.com http://www.angelfire.com/ky/Ashke/ http://www.elfwood.com/lothlorien/artists/laughlin/laughlin.html ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 05 Dec 1998 15:29:30 -0500 (EST) From: AERDEN-+AT+-delphi.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: sorry so short.. but i have to say this Message-ID: <01J4ZF3ZZB8O90ZCL5-+AT+-delphi.com> On 3-DEC-1998 00:51:04.5 mercedes-lackey said to AERDEN me>And I know this is completely off subject, but does anyone know some me>good remedies for stomach flu? Both >gryphons served as mage-teachers in Haven as well, and the >k'Leshya gryphons made extensive modifications to k'Sheyna >Vale, at least partially using magic. Ok now I feel as though I have to look it up. Here we go. From page 160 (paper back) of "Winds of Fate". "...for Grypons were mages, too. A different kind of mage than the Tayledras, or other humans; they were instinctive mages, "earth-mages," Hydona said, using the powers about them deftly and subtly for defense and in their mating flights..." And in rereading "By The Sword" I know that I made a mistake it is not "earth-magic" mentioned in the book but "earth sense". These two things could possibly be the same things but I've seen no indication of such. Yet Daren did some mighty impressive things with his earth sense ( like counter a mages spell). If these two things are the same. Earth sense and earth-magic should then be comparable to mage talent. Sensing the "ley" lines and nodes, when and how the power has been drawn from them, and fixing them (which is all relatively easy earth sensing abilities (heck Daren did it with no training or practice!)). I believe are only available to mage born individuals. Those who have reached the rank of Master (ability to use the ley lines to power spells) and Adept (most of the other abilities). Some like sensing when power has been drawn from a line (not a node) is only done later in the books ( I believe it was first done by Elspeth during her training). Earth sensing (earth-magic) would explain how they (the Gryphons) could not only teach mage born students, but how they could make extensive modifications to k'Sheyna Vale. Who better to teach mages about/change nodes and lines of power (as would probably be the instance inside the k'Sheyna vale) than those who see and manipulate it naturally. Elf-like creatures, mutating from humans, and being named elves from old mythology. Then there's the horse headed guys, either aliens or drastic mutations. I've also always found it interesting that the Bardic magic in Bard's Tale and Bardic Voices and Bedlamz Bard are very similar, (they work actual magic), while the Bardic Gift is much more limited. That was mentioned last time this question arose, but I got the impression from reading the books that they were actually from a different star system. Sorry, no textevd. The Haspurs (if they're the ones I'm thinking of) may have been one of the mutated human strains. Or they may have been an independent sentient race which evolved on that planet; or perhaps the result of magical genetic manipulations (like the gryphons of Velgarth). It doesn't state where they chose to go (reincarnation as Herald or Companion, or the Havens). Firesong chose to go to K'Leysha Vale as no one who knew him before would be there. Need was killed, and it was her destruction that burned Firesong. She told Karal on the Moonpaths that she had not made up her mind what she was going to do (reincarnation or The Havens), but she was going to rest and decide. An'desha stayed in the Plains to become a Shaman. In Owlsight it is mentioned that he is learning how to make either the History Tapestries or the Tapestries like those In Kata'Shin'a'in that make you feel as if you were there. I was not able to discern which. Karal and Altra were going back to Valdemar, where he was going to continue being the Karsite envoy to the court of Selenay. Altra was to act as his eyes. From the wording of the letter from Natoli, it would seem to me that they would be setting up housekeeping before long. He is also mentioned in Owlsight. Things were so peaceful between Valdemar and Karse, that Karal is teaching Karsite to Herald Trainees. There was no mention of Natoli, but I still think they probably have a couple of rugrats driving poor Altra crazy. Florian chose to be reincarntated as a Herald. He told Karal on the Moonpaths that if he met a Herald trainee looking like the form he was in that it would be him, but not to rush up to him like they were old friends, because he would not remember this lifetime. It did not really give any mention about Sejanes or Master Levy other than they were also returning to Valdemar. Demons are mentioned in BTS as well, when Elden and Kero are in the cave and the demon is looking (probably for them). In MPromise, Vanyel mentions taking control of some Wizard's demons and sending them back to Karse. In Arrows Fall, when Ancar's armies attack Valdemar, they are using demons. Griffon in a link with Dirk, Talia, and Roland kills the Magician controlling them and they disappear. Demons are other planal (please excuse spelling) creatures like the Vrondi and Vavir (again excuse spelling). I believe the Vavir are from the etheral plane, the deomons are from the abmyssal plane. The other planal creatures are like humans in that some are good, some bad, and some are indifferent.
