The maps were created by the same person. Did I miss something in the >books? Did those hills really move or is it a mistake on Victor Wrenn's behalf? I think that the Pelagirs run all along the border of the west- near Dhorisha, along the side of Rethwellan- I am looking at the maps in Oathbreakers and AOTQ. The Pelagirs start right on the Rethwellan border with Jkatha and at the end of the Pelagiris Forest. They run all the way into the North of Valdemar. There is a quote in Oathbreakers that explains that I think...must I go look for it??? Okay- fine.. Roald is asking Jadrek about the krashak creature he says that it is from the Pelagirs.. Jadrek says "We have a range called the Pelagirs too... Your Pelagirs and our Pelagirs are the same; except your inland sea cuts off the tail of the range, leaving it isolated from the rest uo in your northwest corner" **** possible spoiler for Oathblood***** I just finished Oathblood and I am about to start Owlflight. I liked Oathblood a lot and was glad I read it however- It did bother me that Tindel's name became Tilden.. (I tried just saying Tindel in my head whenever my eyes saw Tilden)... That and when Tarma called Kira a prodigy at fighting and said she was the kind that came a long once in a teacher's lifetime... that's what she said about Kero- and I like to think that kero was the one. well- til next time my friends -shana ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 06 Dec 1998 14:49:04 PST From: "ambermoon starshadow" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: MERCEDES-LACKEY digest 1805 Message-ID: <19981206224904.11413.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> hello listsibs, there's just a few (slightly random) things I'd like to respond to: people seem to have been asking about series order and so forth, the way I read it was the Arrows trilogy first and then everything else in chronological order, it makes sense. At my suggestion two friends of mine read it like this except that they read the Mage Wars first and then Arrows and then everything else. not trying to yell at anyone, but it really annoys me when people read long series' out of order b/c either they don't understand something or they find out something ahead of time that ruins the beginning. *ducks as everyone throws snowballs and glares* of all ML's books, I've read the Velgarth series except for Owlsight (and people have been mentioning something called Owlknight?)I've read Elvenbane and Elvenblood: loved the former, hated the latter, and can explain why at length to anyone interested. I also read the first two books of Bardic Choices and thought they were a waste of time and paper, but if anyone can convince me that Serrated Edge and Diana Tregarde and the rest are any better I might give them a try. SPOILER: some people mentioned the end of Storm_Breaking: I hated what happened to Firesong (and Karal, ect, but this rant is on the Healer-Adept.) I really like Firesong, and think ML's treatment of him in the Storm books was terrible. For the gods' sake, he *is* a Healer Adept, and I don't think he would have followed Falconsbane! Everyone thought he had everything perfect, and didn't bother to see if it was at all a facade. (Anyone else seriously reminded of Vanyel?) I understand why An'desha left him, but I still can't forgive him for it. on p. 418 - 419 of Storm Warning (paperback) An'desha tells Firesong "You are afraid I will leave you, that I no longer care for you. You are . . . completely, absolutely, utterly wrong . . . . *I will not leave you* . . . . I love you." How can you say this to someone, someone you know is insecure, and then do exactly that, leave them? Unforgivable, IMO. Then at the end of Storm_Breaking, all Firesong really had left was his power and beauty, and one was taken away. I'm very grateful to Silverfox, but I don't like the rest of it at all. *slightly red-faced, Ambermoon takes her copy of LHM and sits in a corner, trying to be unnoticed.* Zhai'helleva, Ambermoon ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Dec 1998 18:33:56 -0500 (EST) From: Amber Bay To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Message-ID: FLUFF**** A very tired and disgruntled youngish woman stomps into the hall. Slipping a navy blue backpack off her shoulders, she flings it up into the air and the entire backpack disappears without a sound. Immensely relieved, she meanders over to one of the food tables (while being careful to avoid the snowball fight) and wearily sits down. Only then, she seems to realize that some occupants are looking at her in puzzlement. "Sorry, I just came from wrangling with my computer science programs. One of then is due in two days, and I have no clue how to write it. This makes me just a teensy bit upset. I just wish i could make my programs disappear like I made my backpack disappear!" After saying this, Ice (who is very seriously thinking about changing her use-name) leans back and closes her eyes, taking in the wonderful ambiance of the hall. A passing sheep strays close and right hand lifts to stroke its soft wool. END FLUFF***** oi vey....i think any other student right now understands what i'm going through...by the gods, i hate exams!!!..i especially despise the last two weeks before the end of the semester, when every teachers decides to assign a project that is due within days of another project!!!..sad to say, i haven't had near enough time to seriously think about fantasy.... people have been asking about the order of the velgarth books...personally, i think they should be read in chronological order...however, i think people can read either AoQ, LHM, the oath books, or the gryphon series and not be given away past plots....however, when people start reading the winds trilogy and on, the earlier trilogies (in my opinion) will be spoiled for them....i mean, if you read winds of fury before LHM, you will already know that van dies and everything... quick question...i know a new serrated edge book is supposed to come out soon...it's called tempest fugit....does anyone know precisely WHEN it will come out???...will it come out before the end of the december month???...also, when does anyone think the new andre book and the book about lavan firestorm is supposed to come out..."blood and thorns" and "burning brightly" i think they called...i'm asking for books for christmas and i want to know if they will be available... i've got a WONDERFUL book that i'm going to suggest everyone try and read...i also love Tanya Huff and she has a book called "Summon the Keeper"....it's set in modern day, is very-much fantasy, and is HILARIOUS...it is truly surprising...she is so good at playing around with words...i strongly, strongly, STRONGLY encourage people to read it...if anyone else has already, please back me up...it's a very easy read (the book flows well) and you will actually laugh out loud!!! another question....i recently read "Mists of Avalon" by MZB and LOVED it...i'm kinda on a arthurian retelling kick...does anyone know of any good books that retell the lengend of king arthur and guinevere and morgan le fay and all of that??? i know that most of this message has not been about misty...please forgive me!!...it feels so good to be posting again!!! ~ Ice ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Dec 1998 20:55:40 -0400 From: "Nelson Greenslade" To: "Misty" Subject: books Message-ID: <014a01be217c$7fe18520$5b95b3cf-+AT+-epzfbrwg> I'm just going to briefly pop in because I, too, have several projects due one after another. <> I just read this, on Friday. It is very, very funny, and it portrays cats so well!! It's set in Kingston, Ontario, and the cast features Claire, a magical guardian of the world; her travelling companion, Austin, a geriactric feline; various relatives of Claire's; Dean, a cleanliness-obsessed, honest-to-God NICE GUY from Newfoundland ^_^; Jacques, a lecherous, French-Canadian ghost; and many, many more. Go! Read it! It's a wonderful book! A slightly darker book by Ms. Huff which I read recently was _Gate of Darness, Circle of Light_. Once again, good versus evil, set in Ontario (Toronto this time). This time there is an almost-Bard, a social worker, a sweet, simple young woman, a baglady wisewoman, an Adept of the Light (bearing a strong resemblance to Korendil), and -- you guessed it -- a cat. Also, look for one of Misty's songs to play a rather dramatic role. ^_~ Oh, and just try not to let the numerous punctuation typos bother you.... <> There's a series by Mary Stewert. The Hollow Hills, The Crystal Caves, The Terrible Day, etc. We have it here, as well as Mists of Avalon, but I haven't actually read any of them. ^_^; However, I lent them to my best friend, and she loved them! She also likes Misty, so it's a good recommendation! <> *shrugs* Sometimes you can't help what you get your hands on first. I for one found that I picked up extraordinary foreshadowing in Black Gryphon that I probably wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't already read LHM, Arrows, Mage Winds, and Mage Storms series, respectively. Or the T&K and Kerowyn books, either. I also developed a slight crush on Amberdrake... *blush* Er, well, that's it! Zhai'helleva! Yeah, I like those books, too. But they are darker and more bloody and gory than Di Tregarde. And the level of violence is very high. Another good series in the same ... genre, if this is the right term, are the Vicky Nelson books by Tanya Huff (Yeah, the same Tanya Huff!). I read the first two and found them very good. Totally different style and approach to the topic. Well, okay, her Vampire is by far not so cute as Jean-Claude (honestly, Henry looks like Henry the VIII) but the level of humor in Tanya's books is very high, very intelligent. First of all, here is a big mug of hot chocolate with cinnamon to cheer you up. Have a seat on this sheep and relax. One very good retelling of teh Arthur legend I read was by Rosemary Sutcliff. I know, she only writes for juveniles but I like her style and the way she tells a story. Her Arthur books contain a lot of Celtic elements, like symbols I had read in other Celtic and/or British, Scottish and Irish legends. She has also written many books set in British history from pre-Celtic to Roman to the Middle Ages. Just mail me if you are interested in a special period, I'll be glad to make suggestions. Her Arthur books are called "The Sword and the Circle", "The Light Beyond the Forest" and "The Road to Camlann". Another nice retelling is by Very Chapman (who BTW was a student of Tolkien's). She has set her story at the Arthurian court but they are centred around characters that make cameo appearances in the legend itself. And the final book is dealing with Arthur's heiress several years after his death. I liked them very much because at the time I read them I was sooooo tired of reading yet another Arthurian book. There titles are "The Green Knight" (as in "Gawain and the Green Knight"), The King's Damossel" and "King Arthur's Daughter". There is also an anthology edited by Parke Godwin called "Invitation to Camelot" with short stories by Jane Yolen, Morgan Llywelyn, Tanith Lee, Phyllis Ann Karr, Elizabeth Scarborough, Susan Shwartz, Grgory Frost, Madeleine Robins, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Sharan Newman, and John M. Ford. And there are the two Grails anthologies edited by Richard Gilliam and Martin Greenberg. They are rather about the Grail than about Arthur and not all stories are pure fantasy. But "Grails: Quests of the Dawn" contains at least a story by Misty, "The Cup and the Cauldron". Uh, does this count as an ObMisty? I'll have one next time, I promise.
