Uhh, ok, obmisty. Has anyone heard of any guidebook to Valdemar? I > heard that there's gonna be one, but I'm not sure. (Does that qualify as an > Obmisty?) Did I 'hear' this from the list? If yes, I apologise. Yep, there are guide books of sorts for the various time periods. They are available from firebirdarts.com There is the Last Herald Mage Concordance and the Arrows of the Queen Concordance. As far as I know there is nothing available for the Mage Wars or for the time and people after Arrows. ****Fluff**** ONLY ONE WEEK OF SCHOOL LEFT!!! and really only one paper and two excruciating long finals.....I mean really long one of the test will take at least 2 1/2 hours since it is 10 short essay and 2 long. I know that some of the people on the list have more difficult jobs than school but I think that I am facing a six year college burnout. I graduated last year and I decided to go for my masters in history and I got a job as a grad assistant for the department...its fun but I really think I need this winter break. ******End Fluff**** Someone awhile ago (sorry I deleted the post) asked about out opinion on the stories in Fiddler Fair...well I usually judge a story by how well I remember it a few month later (of course this can be good and bad memories...I will never forget The Old Man and the Sea..horrid book no matter how much symbolism it had) and really the only ones I remember from that book are the alien ate my pick up and the one about the idiot animal rights people. The rest of them just seemed mediocre and I can't recall a thing about any of them. Now in Oathblood I already knew most of them but the two new ones I remember very well. Owlflight did not leave much of an impression and Silver Gryphon didn't either but all of the other Misty books I can recall very well and I have not read some of them for years. We don't get that great of any in-depth view of energy-magical cultures in Velgarth, so it's really hard to say. In AoQ, there is only mind-magic. In LHM, there is a brief mention of Savil testing her relatives... not really are we told when that is. Elspeth is never tested other than later in life, and as for Firesong, we know at least two things with the Hawkbrothers: there is a larger concetration of mages in this culture than in others (having more people notice any potential), and also that he himself was gifted in that area. >3) Obligatory Misty Content... always have one in your mails... :) talk about >Misty's work, etc... Well, you don't ~have~ to have one in :). ObMisty's were created for those posts that had only fluff in them, or more fluff than Misty content.. kind of, if you feel that you didn't talk about Misty enough, you can include one of these to help your conscience :). --- In regards to the "No True Way" that seems to be the banner of Valdemar, I tend to believe that that is something that is more or less taken up as policy by the Heralds in dealing with the people of Valdemar. I think that because most of the books deal with a very large concentration of Heralds, we don't get to see the every-day beliefs of other people. It's basically a more enforced version of the US gov't non-involvement of religions. When the books talk about each character's personal beliefs, then you see more-or-less a variety of different beliefs. There is also another part of this reasoning. The creation of the Herald system involved Baron Valdemar praying to any and all deities that would listen. The Companions were basically a gift to the people of Valdemar from those deities that talked back. Most likely, IMO, not all of those deities were believed in by every person in Valdemar's group. Because of this, Valdemar decided to take the stance that his government would not prosecute any deity (via prosecuting their worshippers) unless said deity was physically/mentally harming the people of his group/country. This is not to mention the fact that when you are a growing country, and would like to bring in more support/citizens, a show of acceptance of difference works rather well. --- In regards to the tale of Van at the beginning of AoQ, we never quite found out which correct about that other person in the tale. It's anyone's guess :). --- I believe that Misty addresses her ardant enforcement of her copyright over her works in the introduction to Fiddler's Fair. IIRC, there was another author that ran into legal problems when the write of a fanfic story sued that the author had stolen an idea from that fanfic story... the author's ability to choose what to write was hindered. Imo, Misty decided that she wouldn't have her choice inhibited about what she could/couldn't write about her worlds. Any creation that contained these worlds (stories, rp, etc.) might cause her to run into the same problem as her peer had. --- Rhiannon Shadowsong asked: >Why hasn't the US had a woman president? >We pride ourselves on our enlightened attitude and we call our strong >First Ladies noughty names. Go figure. Imo, while the people of America talk in public about having open minds, it's the age-old stanza that once the curtains close in a poll booth, truth comes out. I personally don't exactly care. If you can do the job, do the job. As for calling the First Lady names... I wouldn't say that everybody does so :). Religion is such an interesting :subject, and so many writers seem to strive to make it extremely :boring... hmm? i always figured the bible was a good read... really tears the feminist in me up... :) oh, did you catch the part in milton's "paradise lost" where eve is grovelling at adam's feet, and adam, out of the pure goodness of his heart forgives her? that lousy sonuva*-+AT+-$%-+AT+-... oops, can't insult god now, can we? ;) oh, and thank you sooooo much rhiannon! that would really help in reminding me why i borrowed the book... :) on the "tayledras resemble ***" and"karsites resemble ***" thread... lookie people, i truly believe that misty just drew some noble characteristics from cultures that she loves, and injected them into her characters. i do _not_ think that she has not enough imagination to build a whole race on her own... starspirit added about my assumption... << "the shin'a'in remind of the tribal chinese (what with the proverbs and nomadic movements)" Proverbs yes, but nomadic movements? I dunnow. Maybe in the way they seek revenge (bloodfeuds?), you see it in chinese fighting shows alot. If Misty based the Tayledras and Shin'a'in on real cultures, I can't see it.>> like Pam wrote, they really remind one of the Mongolian nomads. revenge, yes. clan above self, ditto. movements too... they also rear horses and goats. but like starspirit, i also say that Misty didn't really base her characters on any real races... that's just imo, btw... *wrinkles nose at starspirit* i don't think lu dongbin reminds me of darkwind. darkwind won't wear white to the point of _that_.... and he's too... plain to resemble firesong. you know who really reminds me of firesong? chew chor meng in that vampire series... (yeah, well, van had them) i think Brightstar had silver eyes too? it's been waaaay too long since i read LHM... :) original colour? they're related to the Shin'a'in, so the assumption is that they had dark hair and, yes, blue eyes. it's the bleaching that turns the dark roots white, and the blue to ice-blue *shivers*. btw, is there a new colouring of LHM from Daw?
