Wintershard--I LOVED your imitation of Gottfried as a Companion :) I forget who said it, but whoever said that the woman who plays Callista on Xena would be good as Kero is totally right! A new topic......I just finished reading Owen Wister's The Virginian in English. Not fantasy, but really, really good. One thing I noticed is that the protagonist, the Virginian (he never gets a name) at one point calls his horses 'children' or 'younger siblings' (sorry, I don't remember which one)......which led me to wonder. Did Misty get her idea of the Shin'a'in calling their horses "forever-younger clanschildren" from another culture or book, or what? I'm just wondering about it.....has anyone else heard of this idea anywhere Wind to thy wings, and Merry Holidays! I would not recommend this book to any of my friends- If I had started with Owlflight or Owlsight, I would never have read another Misty book. There doesn't seem to be a plot at all! Just lots and lots of unneeded (and not particularly interesting) detail. What's the point of these two books anyway? What's the story? Darian gets chased by barbarians. Darian joins Hawkbrothers. Darian grows up. Reaction: "Oh, okay. So?" Apart from two quotes that would be nice for a signature... and the fact that Firesong made an appearance (rather unimpressive one), I've wasted two hours reading the book. Well, actually, he was good in Stand by Me....but I think it's been down hill since then. Okay, who is Noah Wylie? This brought up another thought - which books/series do you think is most likely to be done live action (or animated)? I was thinking maybe "By the Sword", but that does cover a lot of time and might be hard to do ... maybe one of the more "modern" ones? > George C. Scott as Tremane, or Avery Brooks I kinda like avery brooks as tremaine.... although Robert Duvall might be better (in the serious mode here). If this thread doesn't count as an obmisty, here's one: Even though the various dieties say they won't interfere, it seems as though often (at least in winds and storms) many major characters are being manipulated into specific destinies ... anyone else think this is happening? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Dec 1998 09:23:29 -0600 From: Julia Gray To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Owlsight JMHO Message-ID: <367FB970.80D7256-+AT+-oakton.edu> Starspirit wrote: > >Could be a spoiler for those who haven't read it yet > >S > >P > >O > >I > >L > >E > >R > > > > > > > >S > >P > >A > >C > >E > > > > > >Oh I lament for the good old days of strong characters and strong > >plots that totally consumed your imagination. Apologies to anyone offended by my > rant. > > Starspirit~** I had similar first reaction . . . then I re-read the books trying to figure out what I disliked in particular. Was it that there wasn't much magic? Was it the characters? I decided that Darian didn't much captivate my interest, although the healer was a little bit more sympathetic. I am not soo anti-Owl as y'all are - I just think of them as watered down for a younger audience, perhaps, or as a spin-off to tie together what she has in mind next (at least I hope so....). With magic watered down, the struggles in Winds and Storms just aren't gonna happen. Even Arrows gets into magic - a magic that just isn't there any more. What can she write about? Her writing is different when she writes with Larry Dixon - it's also different when she writes with Andre Norton or anyone else. I have admit, even though i'm a little more kindly disposed to the series as it stands, I got grumpy at the gratuitous (sp?) throwing in of some of her reader's favorite characters. I didn't think that was necessary for either plot or main character development (although it was interesting for firesong's character development....) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Dec 1998 09:26:21 -0600 From: Julia Gray To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: apology. Actually, I loved her collaboration with Anne McCaffrey, The Ship Who Searched, but I really didn't care for her collaboration with Piers Anthony, If I Pay Thee Not in Gold. Maybe it's because I like Anne M, but not Piers A, hmmm? Jody Burgess suggested: >>on movie roles: the guy who plays in the Crow: Stairway to Heaven would make a good Darkwind, or at least I think so. (for those who haven't seen the show, he looks alot like Brandon Lee.)<< Yes! His name is Mark Dukaskas. He was in the movie, Only the Strong (a movie about the Brazilian martial art Capoiera). I suggested him for Skif, but I think Darkwind would be even better, or even Vanyl...actually, the more I think about it, the more I like him for Van. I mean, he is relatively unknown. Dark hair, gorgeous cheekbones, good body & fighting skills, light build...yum.
