I'm a newbie, well, not exactly, I've been off and on the list since 8th grade, and since I'm now a senior (a second semester *slack* senior at that (HS, not college) that says something. About the lifebond thing... OK, I used to have someone that I thought I had a lifebond with, because we were so psychic with each other, but that... fizzled. Now, I'm in love, semi-engaged (in other words, I know we're getting married and when, but don't have a rock on my finger), but I'm not sure about the lifebond thing. That's partially because my ashke is such a realist, but... If a lifebond means that you couldn't live without someone, you love them, and you occasionally odd, unexplainable coincidences pop up, ok, that would be a lifebond. Knowing what they're thinking sometimes, that's part of it too. But anything else? on earth? I'm not sure... maybe... but, on the other hand, sometimes just loving someone can be better than a lifebond, just because it's a choice, not fate. Talia, Vanyel, Selenay, they never had choices whether or not to love their respective lovers. I fell in love with my ashke for who he is... am I making sense? Wind to thy wings, Icesong (a.k.a. A people that had once depended so much on magic now abandoning it and finding a new, nonmagical way to accomplish things. I agree but to add to the story and give it slightly more background I think it would be interesting to start in the time when the two group were one and go through the split up and into the times after of both groups. Perhaps the main characters could be friends that were split on the issue.....or something similar. I know the bones of the story of the break up are told in one of the books, I for one would like to see the more personal side of it. For whoever mentioned the idea about the founding of Valdemar, I heartily agree. I'm really interested in the initial split from the empire. Why it happened, what action did the empire take, etc. I think the whole story behind it could at least make another trilogy and it could also lead into the following rulers and what happened to them. Anyway, that's jus my opinion. >Why didn't Florian "choose" Karal? Sorry, I don't remember who originally posed this question (there's too much fluff between my ears). Okay, this is just a thought that squirmed it's way out from the fluff inside my head, and I'm not quite sure about this because I haven't been able to read any of the Velgrath books for a long time since my friend that I loan them from has gone to Russia, but that's not the point. Is it possible that by some unknown means (and this could very well be a spoiler for any of you that haven't read the books yet) is it possible that Florian knew about what was going to happen, that he was told by whichever God or Goddess orgainises these things that he was going to sacrifice his life for another, for Karal? Is it also possible that he might have been sent on a mission from the very beggining. A mission to help Karal and to give him the strength (both physically and emotionally) to accomplish the things he did, to save Valdemar and the rest of the world? Please excuse me if any of my information is wrong because as I said, it has been a LONG time since I've read the books. But I seem to agree with the ideas that Karal was already choosen by Altra and that he was very comitted to Vkandis. Anyway. Oh and another thing. If Florian knew or even suspected that he was not going to live after everything he could have choosen not to choose Karal because of the bond between a herald and a companion (you know, the one about if one dies the other usually does too). I personally try to get people to start with the LHM books, just because I like them and you don't need prior knowledge of the world to enjoy them. But you can't say virtually anything about the plot without giving something away. Right now I'm saying something along the lines of "This is a good book. You should read it." SNIP<> Thorn swung around in surprise at the voice, the tempest of great wingbeats behind him. <<"What isss thissss?" "Releasssse her, young one - unlesssss you wissssh to fight ussss both togethhhher?">> Thorn sized up the newcomer from nose to tail-tip in a moment, his great silver eyes narrowing with surprised anger. Just for a moment, he looked like a very cruel little boy whose mother had caught him doing something nasty. Scowling, he drew his catch just a bit closer to the stone-black scales of his chest, clenching his talons tighter on the straps of Raven's pack, and when he opened his mouth to speak, little, opalescent trails of fluid fire dripped from his jaws, as if in warning. "My forrressst," he growled. "My kingdom, my quarrry." His expression arrogantly dared her to contradict him, and his form betrayed the slightest swagger as he turned away, as if bored with the larger dragon's presence. In truth, he kept a watchful eye on her, letting Raven dangle in the breeze. Did this foolish female actually have the gall to challenge him? He doubted it. No one had ever opposed him at SeaCliffs, or dared reproach his rudeness. With a sneer, he cast one last look over his shoulder and growled, "Back to yourrrr eggsss, wench - I've no time forrr yourrr nonsssenssse." --+-.__.-+*.__.-.__.-*-._.--+-.__.-+*.__.-.__.-*-._.--+-.__.-+*.__.-.__.-*-._. Meanwhile, at the Hall of Justice: --+-.__.-+*.__.-.__.-*-._.--+-.__.-+*.__.-.__.-*-._.--+-.__.-+*.__.-.__.-*-._. <<"This intruder is no normal elf, friend Erelan, but a dark elf, a spawn of evil, a child of Mara'liweion the Demonqueen! Her kind slew my family, and nearly destroyed my homeland, and such evil cannot be forgiven or forgotten! Such evil ones are not worthy of your protection, good dragon friend,">> Erelan blinked, and fell back a step as the Troll's anger continued to grow. Mara'liweion? _Marion's_ child? The teal dragon shook her head slowly. This was insanity - she considered herself as religious as the next dragon, but to hate an entire race because of a fable.... A little, unpleasant voice in Erelan's head remarked something about pot calling kettle black. Hadn't she herself sworn hatred and distrust against all mages, all because of the evil of one? Hadn't she been wrong? (And all this scarcely a day behind us....) she thought ruefully. The little dragon sighed, and crouched closer to the ground, though she made no move to remove herself from between Muranog's sword and the Dark Elf. :I have to agree with Muranog on one count at least,: she mindspoke Ember. :Your arrival was unannounced, and we've had double our fair share of calamities today. We all could use some reassurance that you're not here to finish the work Nirathei began.: Erelan turned a pleading gaze on Muranog. :Friend, hold a moment in your fury,: she whispered to the mind of the angry Troll. :She may not be all she seems. If she were in league with Savar, would she not have attacked with the force of surprise? She is only one elfling, alone, and no great threat to any in this clearing. I have never met an evil one of her race, nor are the stories of Marion's children part of my heritage - yet, if you say it is so that evil elves exist, I shall believe it, even as evil dragons exist, and trolls, and humans. Still, let this one speak for herself only, no one of us can bear responsibility for the crimes of all our people.: --+-.__.-+*.__.-.__.-*-._.--+-.__.-+*.__.-.__.-*-._.--+-.__.-+*.__.-.__.-*-._. Message-ID: <369A6680.206-+AT+-bscn.com> On the current topic of stories we'd like to see, well, maybe this sounds weird , but I'd like to see a stand-alone (maybe a duology?) set a generation or so after the Founding...back before the Heralds had established themselves as a definite authority...some of the problems they had with the local peoples, etc... I also think it'd be interesting to see a story about a Guard-recruit...just an ordinary, average person, no whizz-bang mental fireworks. (Mm..where did I come up with that?!? sheesh) And I'm re-reading Winds right now! I'm proud of myself...*laugh* Okay that's enough. I refer to how Florian bonded with Karal when Ulrich died, > Etc... > > FireDancer K'Visa Many people have put forth answers to this one, here's some textevd from the pb version of SW (page 271): "Why -- why are you talking to me?" he asked, inanely. :Well, partly because of Altra:...:He's a stranger here as much as you are, and he doesn't know some of what we know. We're familiar with all of the history of Valdemar, including a lot that isn't in the history books. We thought it was time that you had someone around who could answer your questions about this place, the Heralds, and all. You never ask the questions that are in your mind, you keep trying to find the answers in books: this quote goes on to talk about Karal's listing alternatives to Florian, why Karal should listen to Florian, etc. What I find interesting about this is that the Companions decided this. As far as I can tell, the Heralds had nothing do with it.
