Morgain wrote: first i want to give a really huge "thank you" to all those people that kept mentioning tannim kory and the serrated edge books. you piqued my curiosity, so i made a order to amazon and as a result i spent 5 day reading my prizes. (if you are interested 17 books not all from misty that makes 3 books a day more or less). That's unbelievable. I thought I loved to read but some of you guys really put me to shame. Did you really read them, or just skim through them? How did you do it? (Amased look on my face) obsidian wrote i was just wondering. has anyone noticed that most of misty's characters in her books are beautiful. i mean you rarely see an ugly character except maybe for dirk but i've never read the arrow's of the queens series and i'm only basing my facts on what i heard. but if you've noticed either the main character or more are beautiful and never over weight (at least the males). and the rest are just average. As for beautiful chars like some of us have already stated I think the draw to some of the chars, especially the hockbrothers is their exhautic nature. Dirk is ugly, Talia's never said to be beautiful and neither is Elspeth. Firesong being descended from Van and a Hock brother he just cannot loose. A lot of the males are described as Handsome. It would be good to see a truely hidious looking char za hero or main char. As for being overweight, most of them can't afford it because of their duties. "kalen enters the halls and walks over to the oib tent. well i'm back. why is it that when you go to a funeral even that of your mother you seem to not know over half the people there?" I'm really sorry to hear about your mother's passing. It is never an easy thing loosing those you care for. I also want to wish Kristy good luck on her exams, if it isn't already too late. Lady Aphreal, I hope that "you" did not get hurt in the crash and that it was just the car, although your father will probably not be hafpy. Rainfire wrote i think any main character that has someone fall in love with them will just become beautiful because we see them through the other's eyes. That's so true. Isn't there a saying that goes something like love is in the eye of the beholder? To me, the main factor is not looks, but what's inside and that's why I really like Dirk. ,oh one more thing! ,the more I read, storm Breaking, the more I sort of like Firesong although he will never makemy top ten list, maybe twenty though, grinsheep-shaped cookies to all and coffeeZhai'helleva,Lady G ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 20:58:07 PST From: "ambermoon starshadow" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: MERCEDES-LACKEY digest 1853 Message-ID: <19990124045808.27123.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla listsibs, just had to put in my two cents on a thread or two: Beautiful Characters: as mentioned, quite a few weren't beautiful, just seemed that way. for those who do qualify as jaw-dropping, out-of-this-world gorgeous, there was a point made there. Vanyel and Firesong both had beauty and power in abundance, and see what that got them. (loyal to Firesong as I am, I do love that scene in WoFury in Sorrows when they meet Van and he turns out to be prettier and more powerful than Firesong. snicker, snicker!) anyhow, they were both really beautiful, but if anything it caused a lot more problems than it solved. it only made them stand out more from everyone else, and furthered the distance that already existed. (and in Van's case, his looks sure didn't help him any with his father) thanks whoever else mentioned Kethry, she fits into this too. and here's another: Winterhart wasn't overly pretty. especially in the beginning, when she was so prim and stiff and no one could forgive her based on personality. on Evil: I would have a hard time condemning a person as evil, but people certainly commit evil acts. question is, if they commit enough evil acts, and hardly any good ones, does that make them evil? I don't think this is an issue that can be cut clearly in black and white; there's far too much grey. on good guys and bad guys in stories, a villain with a past is definitely preferable to one without. then there are those characters who start out semi-good, wavering, and turn bad. you see it all happen, and know how and why it did, and agonize b/c you know what could have happened, who they could have been. and sometimes, they still have the possibility for redemption, but if they are redeemed at the end they always die. I guess you can't let someone just switch back and live, it doesn't work. or even if they're not redeemed, they usually die anyway. 'course, a good, solid, totally evil and unashamed bad guy can be a lot of fun, as long as the story doesn't take itself seriously. for heroes, I don't like perfect people. they annoy me to no end. (get off that pedestal!) but if their character flaw is too serious, that's not good, b/c then I can't really support them, if they have a part that's totally despicable. for all you Canadians bent on World Domination, a few years ago when Quebec almost seceeded, my grandmother who lives in Maine sent me a really funny article on why Maine should join Quebec. reasoning? better food, English-speaking Canadians reassured by large English-speaking region, getting rid of the idiots in Washington, and a few others that I forget. so when you do decide to invade, should we send you a letter like Britian sent William of Orange? (no offense all UK listsibs, but I've always found that story amusing. "Take over our country, please please please!") In the meantime, I'll gladly take some of your winter weather; it's New England, where's the snow? and the snow days, and so interrupted exams. (now remember, these are worth 20-25% of your grade, and they're as evil as we can make them) chocolate orange sheep to all, Ambermoon Singer of Fire ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Jan 1999 01:03:15 -0500 (EST) From: katira-+AT+-pathfindermail.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: archives? Hmmmm....I don't suppose anyone happens to know if Piers Anthony wrote another book in the Mode series yet? I just read Chaos Mode (one and a half books ago) and I wanna find out what happens to Colene (and Darius and Nona and Burgess)! Lady Asteria (sp?) I hope so, that would be the best. I would _love_ a series on Sunsinger and Shadowdancer! too bad it'll never be written. ~sniff~ Yes, you did hear about a book on Lavan Firestorm. It's supposed to be called Brightly Burning. And now, my thoughts on Owlflight: S P O I L E R S P A C E I really don't see what you all don't like about it. I enjoyed the whole thing. And it all made perfect sense. Even the part where all they did to adopt Darian into the clan was give him that token thing. I mean, think about it. The Tayledras are no longer bound to the Star Eyed's geas so they don't have to make sure whoever joins their clan understands what they're doing. Plus, they were in the middle of the Pelagiris forest with one Adept/Elder who was busy making matrices and keeping the Bad Guy from getting control of the power. There were only twenty Tayledras in the whole camp, so I bet they didn't really have enough people to do one of those formal ceremonies if they wanted to. (I think I mentioned everything...) I thought the end was great too! I think I'm gonna enjoy Owlsight when it finally comes out in paperback. Well, as a person with one drop dead gorgeous char and one exotic looking one, I can tell you that in a way it's more fun to write a drop dead gorgeous one. especially if she happens to be fifteen, a little more then half trained adept class mage, and is an idiot half the time. My exotic looking one isn't quite as fun since she's serious most of the time. ~sigh~ Maybe that'll change some day. Stars light your path, Sorana S. And on to your q's, well, you've probably already gotten a message from a Councilor with the Newbiefest address, if not, ask someone with "Councilor of Mist" in their sigs. But a quick answer--sheep are just a list oddity (read the Newbiefest, it'll explain much better than I ever could), and obMisty stands for Obligatory Misty, ie, if your post is filled with non-related Misty stuff, please try to attach this to the bottom, since this is the MistyList.
