It has come to my intention that even though I have been on the list for a few months I haven't proparly introduced myself. Well, My name is Kristy, although you list sibs can call me by any of my persona names (Noema, Dewshine, Starsong, and Silverstorm). Let's see. Hmm. I'm seventeen, I love to read (sometimes that gets me into trouble at school and write (I'll have some of my finnished work on my best friend's webpage soon!). Ny favorite authors include: Clare Bell, Tamora Pierce, Meredith Ann Pierce, Anne McCaffery, and Misty. I like to watch movies (rent them preferably; but my favorite movie (MY movie) has to be Return of the Jedi (um, I kinda watched that one 17 times) and The Princess Bride) and I like to swim (I jus completed my Bronze Medalion in November). I do have something to talk about, although I'm not sure just how many of you will like it. It's about honnor, chivalry, and what Heralds stand for. Like everybody else on this list, I've read the Mage Winds trilogy and we all saw what happened to Ancar at the end. What I want to point out is that Heralds are supposed to be the embodiment of Law, Justice and Order in Valdemar, right? So shouldn't those Codes of Honnor carry out into other countries as well, like Hardorn? What I'm trying to get at is that, Elspeth should've arrested Ancar (if that was at all possible) so he could stand to trial, right? I'm not saying that I like the guy, but if Heralds are supposed to be the objective judges, I think they should've tried to bring Ancar back to stand trial for his War Crimes and_then_be done with whatever Selenay and her court wanted to do. I know some of you probably won't like what I had to say, but I believe (a bit) in Chivalry and I think Acar should've been arrested and not killed (mind you, I didn't mind at all when Gwena started to trample Ancar). Interesting question - but (a) There doesn't seem to be any international law (and if there was, and it followed our modern law, Ancar would have sovereign immunity anyway). So there doesn't appear to be an obvious legal framework for a trial, and (b) What is there for a trial to establish? They already know all the relevant facts, as far as I can see... And once the facts are known, the heralds are allowed to mete out summary justice. (Given that they have the truth spell, and known uncorruptable heralds, that probably works much better than it would in real life). But I suspect that (c) This was more of a military situation, and they couldn't come up with another way that would stop him. Is likely to be the main reason for choosing what to do; military necessity in defence of the kingdom. -- _|_ Jerry Cullingford jerry.cullingford-+AT+-ffei.co.uk (Work) / | Fujifilm Electronic Imaging jc-+AT+-selune.demon.co.uk (Home) \_|_ Hemel Hempstead, UK PGP key at www.selune.demon.co.uk \__/ (Speaking only for myself and not the company unless otherwise stated) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Feb 1999 17:31:27 +0000 (GMT) From: jerry.cullingford-+AT+-ffei.co.uk To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: companions Message-ID: <9902021731.AA03316-+AT+-suneng2.hh.ffei.co.uk> Miranda Rainsong wrote > [would consider being] Or a companion. Does anyone else agree? Hmmm....yes and no. When they were preparing for attack, there was a meeting where Kerowyn explained that the most effective route would be "cold blooded," "ruthless," and "murder." Even if they _had_ be going in there to arrest Ancar, they would not have been able to, given the insanity that he was driven into. Also, there is a line between honorable and stupid. They were going into a situation with 2 adepts and a master level mage, along with scores of Ancar's personal guard. Would they have been able to arrest him in his own palace? I think that it would have been a death sentence for them. Finally, in Valdemar, Herald's _are_ the judges. They are authorized to carry out sentences. For Ancar's crimes, would he have not been given a death sentence? (Murdering his father, causing a Herald to be killed, torturing another Herald...) Ideally yes, they should have brought him in for a trial. However, other than it made for a much more dramatic climax to the book, it was not possible, I believe, in that situation. Umm...No, The Council and Selenay had already made a judgement on the punishment that Ancar and Falconsbane deserved. Elspeth and the rest of the group were just carrying out those orders. It was morally repugnant to some on the Council but all agreed it was necessary for Valdemar's safety. And the Heralds were not necessarily supposed to be objective judges...a good example of this is were Talia passes judgement and inforces her sentence on the father who had molested his two daughters. If Elspeth had done something unjust Gwena would have had something to say about it. Gwena and the rest of the Companions wanted Ancar dead...Gwena said something about him being a mad dog.....mad dogs don't get justice. Ancar was too dangerous to be brought back for trial...personally I think he would have done Final Strike and killed everyone around him before that happened. Also being tried for war crimes only works if the land has that sort of justice system and Valdemar did not, the Heralds were the judges and Elspeth was within her rights to execute a death sentence. Tashir was the one from Lineas/Baires. Treven is something like Randale's second cousin or so... Okay, the general Jisa situation, and I hope you'll all forgive the following verbosity... Shavri was desperate for a child--'tearing her apart' was the phrase Vanyel used. Randale was infertile, a fact that was kept secret to keep the possibility of an alliance-marriage open (also the reason Randi didn't marry Shavri, or one of the reasons), so they had Vanyel sire Shavri's child. That was Jisa. Because Randale and Shavri were lifebonded but not married, Jisa was illegitimate and could not inherit--just as well, since if she'd been the Heir there would have been much questioning about whether she'd inherit Randale's illness, and they couldn't disprve the possibility without revealing that Randale was infertile and Vanyel was Jisa's father. Jisa also wasn't chosen yet, because she was to be King's Own and the Monarch's Own Companion was Taver, who'd Chosen Shavri. Treven was the Heir because he was Randale's cousin or such and his father had died in an accident. Trev and Jisa lifebonded and married, theoretically putting Jisa back into the line of succession. However, Jisa couldn't be Co-Consort because she wasn't yet Chosen, and when she was Chosen by Taver that made her King's Own rather than co-ruler. I don't see how it's possible to be both, given the duties of the Monarch's Own. Since Treven and Jisa were legally married, though, any of Jisa's children by Trev would be legitimate Heir possibilities so long as they were Chosen. Hence, how Vanyel's blood got into the royal line. <> I don't generally equate sounds with colors--it's the text that I do that with. My recollection was that it was entirely reptile and could hold a person still with is gaze, but, while reading a book on mythical creatures the Basilisk is listed as follows: "…Basilisk, or cockatrice. Part serpent, part rooster, it came from an egg laid by a seven-year-old cock during the time that Sirius was high in the heavens. The egg was spherical and covered by a thick membrane, and sometimes it was hatched by a toad, who sat on it for nine years. This elaborate gestation period produced a creature whose breath could scorch the earth and who glance was lethal - even to itself. Accordingly, anyone who sought to slay the basilisk was wise to carry a mirror." Doesn't sound like Mistys creature to me. > I want to see Flions there. Flions and Unicorns. Human hands are not the only things that can open the feed shed and they know it! tee hee. No names for the RP? Message-ID: <36B7C786.38E105E1-+AT+-softhome.net> Hey guys, I need a little help. You see, I have a wepage I'm working on, and it has at least two pictures of Jody A. Lee's paintings from the Valdemar book covers. Their slightly changed. I got these pictures from another website. The only problem is, I don't know if I'm allowed to use them. I mean, their copyrighted and all, and I don't want to get busted by the law or anything. Should I just put a little text underneath the picture saying 'work by Jody A. Lee' or should I just leave it the way it is? All suggestions are welcomed. Thanks... :-, Obsidian ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Feb 1999 20:41:12 PST From: "ambermoon starshadow" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: MERCEDES-LACKEY digest 1862 Message-ID: <19990203044114.9148.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Bright the Day, (after all the trouble of finding this I accidentally deleted who wrote it): >Obmisty: Okay, hawkbrother names. I was thinking about how one >could go about choosing a hawkbrother use name ... I think it's >mentioned in Owlflight that some are chosen and others are given. >I'd think you'd have to be pretty self aware to choose a usename that >really reflects your personality - or, as one person in Owlflight >mentioned, sometimes you choose a use name and you take on those >characteristics. In any case, for those of you who've thought about >it, or those who have chosen a use name, how did you decide on a name? > well, I chose "Ambermoon" long before I ever read any Misty. it's evolved, actually: it started out as Amber Moon, became Ambermoon, became ambermoon, and now has pretty much returned to Ambermoon. I chose it because I've always had a fascination with the moon, and I chose for myself the moon when it's orange/gold when it's full in late summer. I have a character in my story who's called Silvermoon, my story has "moon" in the title, and I have to daily restrain myself on how many moon references I can put in this thing. also, my hair is amber (more auburn, but it's pretty much undefinable [a certain listsib can stop laughing Right Now - no blonde!]), so that kind of ties in. I asked a friend once about names, as she'd found a name for herself that she's kept for years and really fits her, and she said a "true-name", as she calls it, is one that stays with you, and doesn't fall away. so far this has stayed, I don't know. on names and colors, it's kind of funny: my so-called "real" name, as in the one I was born with, I've always seen as green washed with gold, and the name I use here, is rather self-explanatory for colour. I definitely agree, Raven, that "e" is green. Freedom Walker: I've always meant to go back and find all the Shin'a'in sayings. I've even half-heartedly started a few times, so I can probably round up some page numbers for you. if you want to include them, there's also some Kaled'a'in sayings scattered about, in Black_Gryphon and Winds. OBMisty: well, this doesn't really count, it's more of a question. in my story, darkness is a really big part, the whole darkness v light and all that, but not quite all the same old stuff over again. I want to explore darkness as good, not bad, as healing, not evil. I've even been having some conversations with people on this (in the dark, of course ;) so I'm wondering, does this ever come up in any of Misty's work (Valdemar, if you can, please)? I don't remember anything, but then my memory isn't totally infallible (she's descending from the pedestal! quick, someone, take a picture!) hmm, that didn't really count as an OBMisty, did it? oh well, after exams my brain is fried. or sauteed. at this point, with this weather, mostly water-logged. hoping for dry weather, Ambermoon Singer of Fire ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Feb 1999 20:43:11 -0800 From: "Marv Watson" To: Subject: Re: Name colors/illness/miracles/zodiac braid Message-ID: <00e401be4f2f$b4c32e20$458030cc-+AT+-skywolf> >> A Mage!
