I keep hearing how everyone likes it so much, but I don't have an address. I think it used to be in the back of one of my books of hers, but since I read them so much, those pages tend to fall out sometimes......... Anyway, if anyone can help me, I would appreciate it very much! Death-by-chocolate sheep dreams to all!!!!! (and, yes, I purposly put 5 there) Wind to thy wings! Studio execs drop filk from soundtrack; instead, they use Nine Inch Nails and Metallica. STUDIO EXEC: "Music is music. Who is this Heather Alexander person, anyway?" 11. They never read the script; therefore, they get Danny DeVito to play Vanyel. STUDIO EXEC: "He was so good in 'Twins!' He's sure to be good as this 'Vanyel' guy." 10. They pronounce Vanyel's name *both* ways, driving everyone nuts, including the date you take with you to see the movie. YOU: "That's the third time they said 'VAHN-yel,' and the second they said 'van-YEL!' What gives?" YOUR DATE: "Shut up!" 9. Uncomfortable studio sensors change Vanyel from saych to straight; Stefan and Tylendel are now Stefania and Tylendela. STUDIO EXEC: "What we do is get Cindy Crawford to play both.^ Just give her a different wig and makeup for 'Lendela." 8. End of film not action-packed enough; they decide to swap Van's last strike lightning scene with karate instead. STUDIO EXEC: "So Van jumps up, does a double-flip-kick, turns around , and knocks the leader out with a punch!" 7. Movie plot dumped by big studio; Disney picks it up instead, animates it using their own characters. DISNEY: "So, of course, we get Goofy to play Vanyel." 6. They bring back Mr. Ed to play all the companion parts. YFANDES: "Vaaaaaaaaaaaaanyel." (Of course, this sounds like "Wiiiiiilbur.") 5. Misty doesn't get rights to develop script; studio hires Quentin Tarantino to write it. ORIGINAL LINE: "I--Oh Gods! We're losing him!" NEW LINE: "Holy s****!" 4. While movie is a success, it's only due to the Misty fans, so studio never releases subsequent films. EXEC: "What do you mean, only a handful of the population saw this?" ASSISTANT: "They saw it eighty times *each!!*" 3. Four words: Movie tie in stuff. ANNOUNCER: "Yes! Buy The Last Herald-Mage Cereal! With marshmallow vrondi!" 2. Everyone on the mailing list gets disappointed; studio execs pick *none* of the choices we have discussed. JAGUAR, STORMCLOUD, MEL, 'REESA ETC.: "You mean, they didn't pick _____ as _____?!" 1. Studio executives' email adresses flooded with angry mail; studio decides to make movie go direct-to-video only. EXEC: "This is the thirty-sixth message from this Rynath person about the movie! There's probably nota >specific that it can be nailed down to. actually, shay'a'chern means "'one whose lover is like self', with sexual connotation to the word 'self' that makes it pretty clear they aren't talking about incest *or* similar interests" (p. 145, MPawn) As "chern" also shows up in "kestra'chern", and "kestra" means "casual friend", I've wondered if "chern" could provide the sexual connotation, because of the differences between a kestra'chern and an ordinary Healer. Its precise definition, I don't know. For comparison, the Shin'a'in word for shay'a'chern is she'chorne. For "shay'kreth'ashke", "ashke" means "beloved", but that of a lover, not a family member, close friend, ect., which would be "ke'chara". (The Shin'a'in for "beloved one" is "ves'tacha".) "Shay" could mean "same" here, referring to the bond, and "kreth" could add to it. One thing that may or may not be relevent, the "a" in the middle of "shay'a'chern" probably refers to people, or a person, b/c "Shin'a'in" means "People of the Plains", and "Kaled'a'in" also refers to a people, so the "a'in" probably has some loose translation of "people". Btw, "chern" cannot refer to "spirit", as the word for that is "leshya", or "leshya'e". Ainulindale into Quenya? *Applauds* I haven't actually read the Silmarillion, b/c I was advised that it's not very good, as Tolkien himself didn't write it, but from what I know I have great respect for someone who would try that. (btw - I ordered a big all-in-one hardcover Lord of the Rings with beautiful illustrations and it should be in next week! I'm finally getting my book!) I love languages, although irregular French verbs are the bane of my existance, but I love playing around with the English language. I am the self-titled Master of Nuance, and the Kaled'a'in languages keep me happy. In the back of Oathbreakers is a glossary of selected Shin'a'in terms, which is helpful in figuring out some of the language (and they're also useful in ordinary conversation). wwww, Ambermoon Singer of Fire ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 23:55:12 -0800 From: skyfire-+AT+-t-online.de (skyfire) To: misty mailing list Subject: music/Jake/nitpicking: SBreaking Message-ID: <36CBC760.2F3CC58A-+AT+-t-online.de> Li'nia wrote: > Boy, it's quiet on the list today It's been quiet for *days*. There isn'tsufficient data available to justify a morphological analysis of "chern"in either Tayledras, Kaled'a'in, or Shin'a'in. (Quite privately, I alsosuspect that there never will be enough evidence, since Misty's languagesare not based on any principles but seem to grow out of a "what looks goodand exotic" approach.) This is very different from the situation withTolkienian languages which were developed as complete languages by aprofessional philologist (Tolkien held, iirc, a named professorship atOxford in Philology, specializing in Old Norse and proto-Germaniclanguages). IIRC, The Lord of the Rings was actually written because Tolkien needed to invent people that would have spoken his invented languages. In other words there had to be reasons why his various languages evolved they way that they did. Then Tolkien said himself that "the tale grew in the telling". To me that means that he didn't intend to write an epic but once he started he got sweep away in the story. In Misty's defense, it would be extremely difficult or impossible to invent consistent languages if you were not a linguist or philologist. Now for an ObMisty. If Prince Terenil and Korendil were elves in Tolkien's world would they be more closely related to Elrond and his people or would they be more closely related to another branch of elves?
