I think Vanyel explained it to them in one of the Mage Wars books. There's no choice in a lifebond, and if one dies, the other usually does, too. Bonds with Companions are like that too. Besides, if I read this right, Companions are really Heralds who've made the choice to come back. So it makes sense that it's like lifebonds. The bond with the Firecat is really based on the Firecat's decision. There's so few of them. Karal and Altra would have survived if the other had died (I know, they would have felt wretched, but it wouldn't have been as bad as losing a lifemate). Michael Longcor ....Undead! has a song titled Falconsbane on it. Enjoy! I love it! (and now, for a limited time, silver candy horse hooves!) heh, anyway, I know the movie thread has been abandoned, but I was reading "Knight of Ghosts and Shadows," (for the fifth time) last night and was thinking that it would be one of the easiest to make into a movie. Minimal special effects would be necessary really. I'd forgotten how much I really love that book. I think it is probably the best Urban Fantasy she's ever written. At the moment, I'm letting my two year old daughter look at the pictures on the covers of the Storms books, (she loves the kittie and the horse). At one time (pre-motherhood days), I would have said that I'd let my children read Misty as soon as they could read at that level, but I've since decided it will have to wait until she is much older. I know the time is far off, but I've begun to wonder which books if any would be appropriate for before she reaches the age of 12. (Misty books that is.) (I know at some point, we are going to have to talk about the sexual content/violence in the books, but I don't want to have to patrol my entire bookshelf until that time comes.) After all, I started sneaking books off my parents bookshelf at the age of nine. (and was somewhat confused by a few of them.) So, I guess the question is, Are there any books by Misty that you (my listsibs) would think appropriate for younger children (7-10) ? (I can't think of any offhand.) (I > can't think of any offhand.) Hmm, I think that Chrome Circle would be okay, its more of a straight urban fantasy without any of the sexual abuse or drug use that was in the others. A young person would probably really like Foxtrot and Chintliss. I would also say the Owl books especially Owlflight since it deals with a person about that age. Although it wasn't one of my favorites Silver Gryphon is an adventure/escape story that might appeal to younger kids. On the love/life/Companion bond thread: Well I think that the Companion bond would be the strongest just because of its nature. Lovebonds can break as people change. Lifebonds sometimes don't work...Misty has repeatedly stated that lifebonds don't always get along and the bond can spoil. In all of the books I have never heard of Companions that don't get along w/ their Chosen. Elspeth and Gwena quarrel but they are always there for each other. I think the term Chosen signifies that this is a stronger bond than a lifebond. Lifebonds are simply compatibility with the hope that the people can love each other, Companion bonds are created by a gaurdian spirit who can see into the heart of the Chosen and know that they are the one to make a joined whole. The Companion bond is mind, body and soul. It shouldn't be all that difficult to extrapolate from one >Companion and make it a general rule concerning all kinds of mounts. > >********************************************************************* Obviously, Elspeth had to care for her Companion before Kero arrived, and she was around Companions her whole life. Perhaps, what was meant by that quote is that it was Kero's teachings that really drove the point home. Before Kero arrived, Elspeth had never been in combat of any kind, and I don't think she had ever even ridden circuit. I guess she knew she had to care for her Companion above all else, but Kero's battle perspective made Elspeth think differently about why. ------ As for the question of which is stronger--lovebond, lifebond, or Companion/firecat bond--I think a lifebond & Companion bond would be about equal, and a lovebond a close second. I can't speak on a bond to a firecat because I haven't read of that yet. (What book is that from?) As someone else mentioned (don't remember who!), the breaking of a lifebond or a Companion bond usually results in death. (If one dies, the other follows) Lovebonds are not that strong, but they do have good points that lifebonds do not have. I think a lovebond is very much like a true, solid marriage in today's society. (You know, one that doesn't end in divorce. 80-yr-old couples that are still as much in love as they were when they were 20 :) A lovebond has all the qualities of a lifebond except that the partners cannot read each others thoughts. Stephan said something about it in one of the Winds books when he was explaining it to Skif & Nyara. It takes patience to make a lovebond work, whereas a lifebonded couple has no choice. There is a driving need to be together, and they can share thoughts and/or feelings through their bond, so there is less confusion than in a lovebond. I hope I got that all right. I may be totally confused, but that's how I see it! Gosh, that was wordy! :) W ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Feb 1999 20:17:08 -0800 From: skyfire-+AT+-t-online.de (skyfire) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: shay'kreth'ashke Message-ID: <36CCE5C4.276DD057-+AT+-t-online.de> Alia Rose schrieb: > wait, wait, wait. i thought shay'kreth'ashke just meant a mated > couple, > not necessarily a lifebond. and i thought it applied to shaych > couples? Myself and many other non-parents I know have come to the conclusion that if someone is mature enough to understand implicit sexual content of a book they are probably mature enough to not be affected by it. I know, from personal experience, that it is possible to entirely miss sexual content in books and movies even if you read/watch them incessantly. I'd probably avoid explicit sexual content (LHM would probably be entirely out of the question for many, many decades), but AotQ or the Storm books would probably be okay. For those of you out there who do not know anybody (in real life) that reads Misty, I, too, had that problem. Then I got to college. Last year, by random selection of the freshman class, there were more _copies_ of some of her works _in my suite_ than I knew people at my high school who had read them. I agree with the missing-the-sexual-content part. I missed some pretty darn blatant references the first time I read a book with particularly sexual context. (I was probably 10 or so.) I think that the important thing to remember when selecting books for children is not their age but their maturity level. One 12 year old may be ready for books that another 15 year old may not be ready for yet. But I think that all of the Misty books that I've read (all of the Valdemar books except the Oath books) are probably Not a Good Idea for most kids to read until at least middle school. Although some of them may not themselves contain things that Children Should Not Know About Yet, they ARE in a series, and I think that if a child read one of them and liked it, they would choose other things by that author to read, especially if they were in the same series/world. For example, I read a young adult novel by Tanith Lee called _Black Unicorn_ back in early middle school. I rather liked it, so I went to the public library to see what else she had written. I ended up with a copy of _The Secret Books of Paradys Book One: The Book of the Damned_, which was definitely not appropriate for a middle schooler! (Although I rather liked some of the stories in it, it probably would have given my parents no shortage of grey hairs if they had noticed.) I'm not sure how much harm it does to a child to start reading "inappropriate" books at a young age. (I turned out remarkably boringly and still haven't really DONE anything that would give my parents grey hairs, even though I am now in college and thus out of their immediate supervision. :)) Still, I would wait until a child starts choosing books with that general kind of subject matter on their own, or starts watching that sort of tv, or begins subscribing to magazines such as YM or Teen. (Not that those are particularly good magazines or anything, just that they deal with relationships and such.) To me, that implies that the child is already starting to think about such things, and that they might then be ready for and appreciate the books. BTW, If anyone wants a list of fantasy and sci/fi books and about what age/maturity I think they are appropriate for, email me offlist at ljt-+AT+-lclark.edu and I'll be glad to send you one.
