I'm pretty sure that this was because Skif COULD have hit her hard enough to knock her out, thus "disabling" her, but because this is mock combat and that would hurt, he did not. Instead, he just lightly tapped her and called "disable" to simulate that. It's probably a pretty standard convention for such fights. L.J. Seems more likely to me than any mental attack, which could have been feigned via something Mindspoken and which Elspeth could probably attempt to block with shields. (or something close to it.) i doubt its a magical attack, because the valdemarans at that point were still under the protections of Vanyel's shields. by the way, about this art stuff, i think my favorite art is the covers of the WOF trilogy, and the work in Storm Warning. except that the illustration of Altra is COMPLETELY different on the cover than in the book. (katie shakes her head in confusion and disgust). but the one picture that COMPLETELY annoys me is the only one with elspeth in it, in Storm Breaking. that really bothers me, and i don't know why. i agree more with her portrayel on the cover of the mage winds books. okay, okay, i'm done complaining -katie reluctantly returns the soapbox to the more positive members of the list before somebody throws something at her. -+AT+-----}----- A rose for my fellow list-sibs "There is no such thing as a coincidence, only mortals who have not fought the winds of fate." I'm somewhat new to the list (IOW, I've been lurking for the past month or so and have decided to de-lurk, finally) and I've noticed that there has been a lot of talk recently about people IRL doing awful things (i.e. destroying gravesite flowers, etc.) and our reactions to that. I just wanted to inject a positive note into the list, to remind us all that people CAN do good things. My sister is a single mother and a graduate student at the University of Georgia. Last Sunday, the family housing apartment complex in which she lived was destroyed by fire. The roof caved in, rendering homeless thirteen families, many of which consisted of three generations under one roof. Thankfully, many of her irreplaceable items were spared...there was very little actual fire damage in my sisters apartment, but between the water damage from the fire hoses and the damage done by the collapsing roof, a great many things were lost. Worst of all, my nine-year-old nieces cat died from smoke inhalation. Now for the good part...the modern-day-heralds part. Since the fire, the community has united to help the victims of the fire. Donations of food, clothing and other necessities have poured in. Strangers have donated large sums of money to help the families who lost things in the fire. My sister alone has received well over a thousand dollars in cash donations, not to mention the clothing, textbooks, etc. that have been replaced. Even though she is only in her mid-thirties, she has a significant hearing loss in both ears. A hearing aid company has donated a pair of $2000 programable hearing aids to replace the much simpler models destroyed during the fire. This outporing of goodwill and help has moved me more than I can say. I have spent much of the past week cleaning salvaged furniture and clothing. I do this because she is my sister and I love her, but to see people who have never met her (or the other people from the accident) giving so much of themselves renews my faith in people. Sometimes we forget that people are capable of such goodness, when we see the horrible things on the news all the time. I just wanted to inject a positive note about people. I would also love to hear about "modern-day Heralds" that you may have encountered. One of my co-workers also lived in the section of Family Housing that burned, and though she lost a lot of her things to the fire, I agree that a community pull together to help people in need is an incredible thing to see. They say adversity brings out the best and the worst in peoples' characters - sometimes it's easy to forget that though the flashing-sword-type heroism may be exciting and easy to see, I think the best kind of courage, honor, and heroism comes later. When people work together with the strength and patience to rebuild from a devastating loss, it really shows how loyal they can be to one another. It seemed to me, given the context, to be clearly a convention of wargames and other type of practice combat, where deadly force is simulated, rather than actually used. In such situations, disabling or deadly blows are "called" when they are made. It's sort of like calling "touche" in fencing, rather than actually running someone through or cutting their cheek open, or whatever (which is, after all, what they were practicing to do). Without this convention, there would be too much attrition in the practice rounds and the Healer's Collegium would be full of dead and dying Herald trainees who just weren't fast enough during practice. =) May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd Councilor of Mist Kenneth Allen Hyde | No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife Univ. of Delaware | between the shoulder blades will seriously Dept. of Linguistics | cramp his style -- Old Jhereg proverb kenny-+AT+-Udel.Edu | A mind is a terrible toy to waste! -- Me //www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/prof/ken.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Mar 1999 06:40:14 PST From: "Li'nia Stormdancer" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Owlnight and new Misty Message-ID: <19990302144016.5368.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla List-Sibs! As for If I Pay Thee Not In Gold... It has its definite good points, but as a whole I can't bring myself to think too highly of it... the longer it went on, the more and more far-fetched it got and the less I cared about any of the characters. The slave (whose name I forget) that the heroine (whose name I also forget, which ought to tell you something about how concerned I was about her welfare) picked up early in the book had potential as a character but fell into the background as soon as they left the city, basically... Ware was my favorite character, and maybe it's just my own personal taste, but I really could have done without a certain quirk of demonkind which I will not specify so as not to ruin a major plot point for those who haven't read the book. Personally, I'd have been a lot happier if the story had stayed in the city and they'd found some other way of defeating their enemy. Most of the strange new lands and bizarre creatures really just lessened my interest in the story. It's easy for me to blame that far-fetchedness on Piers Anthony, who--though I like a lot of his books--had a tendency to go off on ridiculous paths from a really good beginning... though I expect both authors had a hand in it. On the whole, it's not a bad book, but falls a little behind The Elvenbane on my personal scale--largely mediocre, with occasional random flashes of the brilliance that I *know* Misty and Piers Anthony can both show. I have to agree with Stormdance here that when Amberdrake was talking about lifebonds, he was talking about the personality and the love shared between one another. Lifebonds don't specifically have to happen to the elite, i.e.) Heralds, Talyedras, Shin'a'in (although we have yet to see this happen), and Bards. Lifebonds can happen to the most ordinary of people, *if* they love one another as much as, say Dirk and Talia do. Oh, Ambermoon, I think I was the one that mentioned StarTrek. Does everybody remember my rant? Anyway, I heard from a friend that they're going to do one more StarTrek: the Next Generation movie and *then* a DSN movie. Damn, I want one now! I want to see Bashir on the big screen! Does anybody know when Brightly Burning is about? I really want to read it. Although that'll probably mean another sad story where another favourite character of ours dies. Then again, I wasn't *really* sad when Vanyel died. He and I never connected as well as I do with some of her other charcters. But I will admit that he's a cool character, even if I didn't like the series. I can't remember who (sorry, accidental deletion) asked, but they wanted to know what it meant when Skif "hit" the side of Elspeth's head and said "disabled". We play war games a lot, and one of the things we still have to resort to is pointing a pistol at someone and saying "bang, bang, you're dead". Sad, but true. I think that Misty was just having them simulate an actual fight; it's not very cost-effective or nice to the players to have them kill or maim or knock each other out every time. *g* Anyway, that's my two cents! I have read all of the Valdemar books as well as the Serrated Edge, Di Tregarde and Elven books. I havethought that all of them were good. I have also read IIPTNIG And I thought that it was really goos but to me it was an only read it once book. Another I really liked was Firebird. I thought that it was really good. I have also read the ship who searched. That particular series is actually not Misty mainly. But it is still good. Other books in that series are the ship who sang and the city who fought. Both are pretty good but I liked the ship who searched the best. I need to go now but I want to leave with saying that I have never read a Misty book or Co-Misty book wich I didn't love.
