Where might this be found? <> Hmmm. I guess that's a kind of censoring I hadn't considered. My parents had 2 "birds&bees" discussions with me: one when I was five and drew a picture of cat people kissing (look, the daring prince had just liberated the fiery princess from the clutches of the ruthless wizard, okay?), and the other about five years later when I was doodling things a bit more... mature. Frankly, my mother gave me booklets, ~lots~ of 'em, about puberty and human sexuality. She rented me an educational video about it. I knew where babies came from very early in life. So, no, I wasn't censored in that way. Curiously enough, I now "censor" my books for my parents. Actually, I edit content summary. I can tell the entire plot of Magic's Pawn to my father without once mentioning Van's sexuality or Tylendel's gender. Really. Other stories, too. I feel a teensy bit guilty about not letting my father in on books this important to me, but it's better than having them taken away. No doubt he's confused as to how all these wonky ideas are seeping into my brain. Speaking of censorship, I just finished Born To Run, ad boy was I ever P.O.'d at Tania's parents, not just for burning her books, but for restricting all aspects of her life. Though the book-burning was a major deal. I enjoy finding things I know about in book and stuff, but that's just creepy. I'd already been told about that little "Haven's Reach" tidbit, but I didn't ~get~ it until five minutes after I finished the book. *rolls eyes at her own slowness* That's what I get for living under a rock... <> "It's evil, wrong, and depraved, and punishable by children, but we're weak" seems about fitting. "Ironrose was really sweet, providing us with insights on both the Hertasi community and the less visible members of the Tayledras clans. "Sunlancer" was excellent, a morals vs. duty tale, and I loved it. "The Salamander" gave us a peak and some of the more mundane denizens of Velgarth. "Blue Heart" was bittersweet. Bitter because of the unfortunate circumstances, sweet/sad because it mentions Van... "Chance" cleared up the whole "there was that guardsman" comment, and introduced me to a character I will forever love (Jonne). It also gave Van some happiness. :) "In the Forest of Sorrows" was good, another little look into Van's Legend after he passed... and probaly before Stefen joined him. "...Another Successful Experiment" was kind of funny... Ah, who am I kidding? I loved practically every story! If you haven't read _Sword of Ice_, go and get it! I love Star Trek too!!! Perhaps if your life was threatened by some moron who decided to devote his life to "taking you out" (and we're not talking dinner here) such that the FBI considered it a serious threat then you could say she was overboard. Otherwise I would suggest to you that she was and probably still is a rather frightened person. I know I would be and if something I did was egging the would be assassin on I would probably stop it. I would also take other measures to protect myself and my family at conventions and I would be extremely upset when said convention reneged on providing the security they had promised. Stalkers DO kill people! Why do you think there are stalker laws popping up all over the country? Believe it or not it is not because our polititions like to write new laws. This weasel was/is threatening to kill her!!!! If he were to succeed there would be NO new books period! Taking into consideration the other "incident" at her home I consider her reaction well within bounds. So while I regret the fact that there will be no new Diana books I understand I do not feel the need to berate her for stating her reasons. She could have just said NO and left it at that. While I haven't read any of the Diana Trigarde books myself, I have heard that they are good. I also don't like the fact that an author must any reason stop the art that they make on any character, especially ones that fans of such an artist enjoy. I'd like to stop a mini-flame war before it starts by saying that there are strong emotions on both sides of this issue, both in regards to people who are asking why she stopped, and those answering. I have read the Last Straw letter that Misty wrote, and I can understand why she is angry for the reasons I've already stated. Some people might take offense to such a tone, as I'm sure that Misty took offense to the tone that she received from her writing. However, in the same stroke of the keys, I would like to say that yelling and forceful arguing over such a thing is not a discussion. It is merely yelling and forceful arguing. It is the same as if I were to yell at you because I thought that you were wrong for your opinion that yellow balloons were better than green, instead of asking why calmly and perhaps debating the issue. This being a discussion list, let's not argue over balloons, okay? That being said, I believe that Laven Firestorm was also talked about some in the Arrows books as well, because of the Herald trainee (not remembering his name at the moment), who had the rare talent for it as well. I just finished the Mage Winds trilogy the other day! :) Man, I really liked it, I think it's almost up there with LHM, a close second. There was only one part that sort of bothered me, it was at the very end of WoFury, in the final showdown between Elspeth and Hulda. After Hulda recognizes Elspeth, and is afraid of her, "Elspeth laughed histerically." That bothered me, did it bother anyone else? I mean sure, Hulda was evil and all, but I never figured Elspeth to be one to laugh histerically in a battle to the death. That kind of borders on evil itself. Since I read Mage Storms first, I already knew about what happened to Dawnfire and Tre'valen, and that everyone else basically lives, and the bad guys die. Her life had been greatly altered because of Hulda, and the entire trip into Hardon had been tense with fear of discovery. At that moment, she was in a life or death battle, which, I would say, is a pretty stressful situation. :) I think that everything had just built up to a point where, prehaps Elspeth was feeling a little crazed. (I know I've felt like that....I'm sure we all have.) A bit crazy, perhaps, but definately not evil. But that's just my impression from memory. I felt that one should think first prior to labeling something overboard. Secondly no I was not attempting to start a flame war. Such things create zero benefit to anyone - especially the bystanders. Finally a small bit of personal history as to why I did not consider Mistys comments "over the top" Twentysix years ago we had a arsonist loose in my town. (Hermiston, OR pop app 10,000 for the curious). This deranged individual had decided that the merchants of the town and others had conspired to destroy his life. Therefore he decided to destroy ours. Ours being my parents and by association mine - with fire. He proceeded to start several fires, some of which gutted houses. He ment to burn down our house. THE ONLY THING THAT STOPPED HIM WAS THE FACT THAT HE GOT THE HOUSE NUMBER WRONG! He misread the first digit and started a fire that gutted 845 instead of 945. At that time I was 17, I lived in the basement with one way out. The windows were to small. Had the house been burned I would have perished, burned to death. Not a pleasent way to go. To this day they still have not completly rebuilt the house the arsonist did burn down. The police had a 24 hour watch placed on our house after he missed it. I slept with a loaded shotgun by my bed just in case he decided to try again. He was finally captured at the site of his final fire, a mobile home. A baby was in the room under which he started the fire. I thank God that this deranged individual was stopped before he succeeded in killing someone. So I have a little bit of an idea of what Misty is going thru. My vervent wish is that the FBI or police or someone catches this person and lockes them away for a long long time. Take it as you will. That is my reasoning.
