Message-ID: <043701be6684$c70592a0$82c828c3-+AT+-i.casale> Hi all! I don't know who's in the UK and who's not but I was just wondering if we could set something up to meet at some point. I don't know what everyone thinks about that. Personally, I'd love to meet with some people who have interests in common . Maybe we could find somewhere sort of in the middle, maybe London? to meet up and chat about the books and stuff... BTW, Borders on Oxford Street, just past the station as you're going up to Tottenham Court Road has lots of Misty. I'm looking to branch out and read more fantasy- I like fantasy more than Sci-fi. Any suggestions? I know someone mentioned Guy Gabriel Kay or something like that ... I've got something called 'the summer tree' which I picked up ina book sale- I wanted to check about sexual abuse/violence in the book though cos I really don't like that and I heard a mention that some of his books have quite a bit of that. Had anyone read... Mike Jeffries or Lynn Flewelling? I picked up some books by them in London to try out along with a Terry Brooks 'cos I'm always seeing books around by him... David Eddings I picked up Pawn of Prophesy um... something by I. V. J...somthing... I tend to like books with a male character 15+, h/c type stuff ... some violence is fine but I don't like stuff with any sexual abuse. Can anyone help with suggestions? Um... an obmisty would be good in case the first bit doesn't count... don't think it does... um... Elvenbane- I liked that one, just let me get it figured in my head... oh, Valyn... I liked the bits with the dragons and Shana's crush That was funny and it really livened things up. I liked the Mero/ Valyn relationship-thought that was portrayed quite well with Valyn not being just totally heroic but a complete jackass a lot of the time but very fond of mero... I haven't read 'if I pay three not in gold' but I have it... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Mar 1999 15:56:30 PST From: Starshadow * To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Braid: Pink Wand/Hobbit/oldbies. (Sorry, I just found out that I'm apparently the Talk Show Host of the Universe. O_o) As you may have guessed from my subject line (if you looked at it), I had a merry adventure today! Yes, I left the province and went to...*drumroll* Halifax!!! *trumpet fanfare* Why is this such a big deal? Well, for on thing, it means I actually went somewhere on my march break! I also had a fun time. ;) After taking 15 minutes or so to drag my unwilling body out of bed (at 6:30!), I just barely managed to get dressed, grab some necessities and get out the door in time. I brought 2 books with me (Born to Run, and an anthology with "Angel of the City" in it. *snif*.) in the hopes that I could get some rereading done. If I could stay awake, that is. I got a caf mocha and a chocolate chip muffin from Tim Horton's as a breakfast/caffeine boost, in hopes of managing to wake up. I finished the story, flipped through a couple of the others, and then *blush* slept for the rest of the drive in (3 hours). When I came to (at my mom's insistance), we were somewhere in the suburbs, looking for the MicMac Mall and the place Dad had to go (as a witness in a trial). We found the mall (yayyy!) after Dad was forced to -= stop and ask for directions =-, and, after agreeing on a meeting place and time, Mom and I headed off to explore the mall!!! :) After wandering around for a while (finding The House of Knives [which in my mall is just a kiosk] with its cool swords ^o^, and The Sweet Factory [a store I went to once as a small child and dreamed of ever since]), we headed out to the Chapters across the parking lot. **** Take Note Any Listsibs In Halifax Area! **** The Chapters by the MicMac Mall had ~many~ Misty books, including: at least 2 of the Di Tregarde series, the Mage Wars series, Wheels of Fire, Chrome Circle, Oathblood, Tiger Burning Bright, and more! I didn't spot If I Pay Thee Not In Gold, but they've only been open a week and are still somewhat disorganised, so I forgive. ^_~ I also found Spiritride, Chicks In Chainmail (from which I read 2 tales), Neon Genesis Evangelion Volume #1, and a few other goodies! {= Unfortunately, I could only get 2 books! It came down to a choice between WoF, CC, and Spiritride. Since I just finished BtR, and When the Bough Breaks is waiting on my shelf somewhere, I picked WoF, and Elvendude's sequel. Expect to hear about them soon! After meeting up with Dad, I was crushed when he vetoed my hopes of eating Japanese food at the Food Court, insisting on going to (and this is a quote): "some seedy little dive along the highway. Greasy food, yum..." *gags* But, once again Fortune and Fate decided to cut me a break, and while Mom was mailing a 'secret' package and I was reading X-Men Unlimited #22 at a magazine stand (I finally figured out ~who~ Marrow has a crush on!), Dad changed his mind. Thus my lunch was the delectable Chicken Combo from Sukiyaki!!!!! > Er? Is it especially icky/sad, and could I possibly skip it? What chapter? < The sort of thing that makes you squeal and point and cry "plot tie! plot tie!" (...or is that just me?)>> *pats her hand* It's not just you. In fact, I do that if something corresponds with something happening in my life, which is oddly often... <<"Songsinger now through tears gives up his power- Sings back the magic to Windriders hands." Now Companions DONT have hands that i know of...so does this mean that Windrider IS/was the Heir, I am almost positive I am right but I thought I would ask..>> That's always bugged me, too. Does anyone know the answer? *Elsa manages to get herself hanging upside down in a large tree. She hauls out a megaphone (apparently from the back pocket of her black jeans) and yells "FREE FOOD!! FREE FOOD OVER HERE, FOLKS!!!" After the stampede, she says:* "Now that I've got your attention, I'd just like to remind all you Listsibs that html and MIME format messages mess up Vanyel, our server-thingy, which means the digests get longer, and our fabulous Listmistress Mel might end up with some sort of hassel on her hands. Sorry, don't remember the name of the editor. The title of the story is "Stolen Silver" and it's about how he got Chosen. On the subject of name recycling, I'd noticed that too. For instance, in AotQ, the servant who comes to invite Talia and Jadus to their winter revel is named Medren. Hmmmmmm.... are descendants (or by-blows) of a certain Ashkevron bard part of the Palace staff? Or is it just one of those things like having four people named Mike in the same class? (Speaking of which, has anybody noticed that this tends not to happen in books?) She's used the word "char" in several books as the basis for the names of the villians. There's also Shar in Chrome Circle. Although Shar isn't really a villian. Maybe it's a secret code. ;) Becky said Character driven vs. plot driven in the showdown of the century! No, seriously, what do y'all think on that subject -- which you prefer, whether they're differentiable, where the works of Misty fall? I think it depends on the story that you're telling. If you want readers to really care about the people in your book then you have to write a character driven story. If you want readers to focus on the actual events then you will only develop the characters enough to move the story along. Misty seems to be more suited to writing a character driven story. Thinking about plot driven stories makes me think of Joe Friday from Dragnet. "Just the facts ma'am." It can be dry reading. Someone asked about Elvenbane: I liked it but didn't care for Elvenblood as much. Elvenblood just seemed to go in too many directions at one time. Because the story didn't go the direction I anticipated, it was disappointing. The ending also left me very unsatisfied. I am still wondering when the third book is going to come out. There seemed to be a lot of loose threads that needed tying up. I've never really thought much on the subject, but now that you mention it, I think I prefer character driven plots. There's nothing I love more in a book than well thought out, and well developed characters. Misty definitely falls in the catagory of character driven, definitley, definitely, definitely. One of my first experiences with fantasy (tolkien aside) was Terry Brooks. I read all the Shannara books. And I'd have to say his are mostly plot driven, or at least less character driven than Misty's. So after I read all those books and picked up my first Misty book AotQ, I was impressed, nay, shocked by the vividness of the characters, and how the plot was only secondary to them. I didn't quite know what to think at first, but I liked it I guess, cause I've been hooked ever since. I don't think that plot driven books are dry, no not at all, I'm very fond of many of them. but there's just something more interesting about people. IMNSHO, people, on the whole, are interesting creatures. *g* and it takes a very talented writer to be able to capture people with such many faceted personalities. Misty does that quite well. Well anyway, that's my $.03. (What can I say? I'm generous, just had to throw in an extra cent.) "Little bits of sheep wool to you all!" she says as she picks them off her clothes, and out of her hair, tossing them at her list-sibs. Honestly no, I don't think that a stage performance of a misty story would do well brought to stage. Too much is most of her stories are mental, not physical. It could be done with soliloquies, but I think that it would not be enjoyable enough for the joe-average play/musical viewing audience. I didn't like the Holderkin. I give the holderkin a bit more credit than that. I'd think they think of sex as a duty, as Talya's thoughts in AtoQ show. textevd: pg 37, AotQ "(Talya) giggled at the unseemly (but amusing) notion of the Husband running from house to house in the night, intent on doing his duty with each of his Wives." That to me makes me think that sex was a duty. I mean, arranged marriags, and yet the man has to sleep with each wife every night? Didn't she say later in the book that her father had had nine wives at one point? My other thought was that they could view it as the Roman Catholic Church used to (and to a point, still does). That sex is for procreation only, and any enjoyment of it is purely a side issue. No offense intended to Catholics on the list, I happen to be one myself.
