Message-ID: <035601be69af$9293b6e0$f4a5b3cf-+AT+-epzfbrwg> Thanks to Jennifer M. Shultz for correcting me about the Holderkin's probable attitudes towards procreation. I was mistaken. Jennifer M. Shultz also suggested: <> Hmm. Well, outside of Misty's books, my least favorite book is... Hurt So Good, a romance novel I read a few years ago and did not enjoy in the slightest.(Although there's a Charles De Lint book that comes in a close second.) My least favorite character would be... um, I couldn't say. There are so many to choose from, and I keep thinking up redeeming qualities... In misty's books, my least faveorite character was Elspeth, and my least favorite book was Silver Gryphon. I think. Cennydd revealed to those who didn't know: <> *shrugs* Different strokes for different folks. I love the idea of Elves living in our world, and I love some of the characters (*chanting* Kory! Kory! Kory!), but the themes were a little... darker (?) than most of the Velgarth books. The SERRAted Edge books were less "save the world" and more "save the children". It's an interesting direction to take, and it really does do some good, making people see some of the problems with this world and telling us (in the Afterward, usually) what we might be able to do to change things. May favorite of her Urban Fantasies (so far) is either Sacred Ground or Summoned to Tourney (I love the beginning!! [it starts with Kory, of course]), but there are some ways where they just don't compare to, say, Oathbreakers. Yvonne departed with the words: <> Thanx! We're snowed in here in New Brunswick. This means a) I got 2 extra days of March Break, since we also missed just before, and b) I have to mop the floors. *groan* Cennydd later wrote: <> Here here! Those are the best kinds of books! Um.. does anyone remember what happened to the Friendship Ring? I haven't seen it in ages." ~~~End Fluff~~ Okay, now that I've gotten some fluffiness out of my system, it's time to actually respond to stuff. I'm sorry that some of this is rather old. So much to say, and so little time! Least favorite Misty book.. hm.. I can't think of one that I've really disliked so far. I suppose OwlFlight is the one that I've liked the least, maybe? I didn't think it was actually bad, just not as good as some of Misty's other stuff. I think the main thing that bothers me about her latest Valdemar books is that they aren't long enough. There doesn't seem to be enough time for really deep character development, and everything either moves along too fast or a rather simple event is drawn out too far. I definitely seem to be in the minority here, but I *did* like Silver Gryphon. Blade annoyed me slightly, but I did like Tad and the wyrsa, and there were parts with Snowstar! Yay! Again, I think the main problem with the book was that it would have been better as a short story or as part of a larger book. There just wasn't enough happening in SGryphon to really deserve a whole book, and that's also how OFlight and what I've read of OSight seem to me. ::shakes her head:: Does that make sense, or have I just been babbling mindlessly for an entire paragraph? I'm not sure about least favorite character. I'd have to think about it for a while. Shantaya Autumnleaf said: <> Oh, why must everyone dislike the quiet and submissive people? Not everyone can be a bold and daring leader. I like characters like Karal and Talia because they show that even if you're not really outgoing and don't have especially pronounced leadership qualities, you can still be a courageous person and make a difference. I could really relate to Talia and Karal and An'desha and others like them because they weren't really "heroic" types. I enjoyed seeing them gradually overcome their personal and emotional problems, even if they didn't get to go charging into battle at the head of their own armies. Although I certainly like reading about people who do. Kero and Tarma, yay! Personally, I'm glad Misty's books have both kinds of main characters. :-) Rainstar said: <> After BGryphon, he really fades into the background. I can hardly wait for a DS9 movie! Orelalaith said about Darian having blue eyes on OSight cover: <> True, they do bleach out. But his eyes still couldn't fade to a color they never were to begin with. They should bleach to pale brown. Of course, you'd think that if all the color were being bleached away, everyone would eventually have reddish eyes like albinos. At least that seems like the way it should be.. but I could be wrong. Orelalaith also said: <> Nope, not me! I really liked the pics of Keisha and Snowfire. Actually, I like most of Larry Dixon's art, but again I seem to be in the minority here. Oh well! You are right: not everybody can (or should) be a leader or swashbuckling hero. I like reading about the kind of people you described above because if done well it might give a nice twist to a story. The reason why I dislike Karal has to do with a real life person he reminded me of. Always eager to help, always eager to serve and to do things for other people, but the RL person did it to please others, because he thought he would climb the ladder to success this way. My favorite Misty book that I've read so far has to be Chrome Circle. Overall I like the Valdemar books that I've read more than her other books that I've read, but Chrome Circle sticks out as my overall favorite. My least favorite book has to be When the Bough Breaks. It was well writen, but the subject of it and just the disturbing nature of it made it the only book that made me physically ill while reading it. I even had one friend refuse to talk to me for a week after I let her read the book and her not believing me that it was rather dark in nature. As for the apparant general dislike of the Silver Gryphon, I have to disagree. Admittedly it doesn't seem to fit the other two books of the series very well and she has written better books, but I feel what it does accomplish as a book is to open up the possibilty of more books from that time period. To me it seems more like a precursor to a new series than the conclusion to the Gryphon trilogy. Though really I can't think of any kind of story she could have done featuring the same characters from the first two gryphon books that would have worked any better either. Maybe I'm wrong there though. My favorite character has to be Kethry from the Oath books. I can't exactly explain why, but she is. My least favorite character hmmmmmmm... I don't know. Maybe the evil wizard from the southern Empire from The White Gryphon. Favorite Non-Misty book. I can't name just one, that would be cruel and unusal punishment to all the great books that I've read, but for the sake of argument I'll say Laurell Hamilton's Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series is one of my current favorites. Least Favofire Non-Misty book has to be Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. I like Anne Rice as a writer, but I really dislike her vampire writing. Another thing I've noticed in Misty's books or at least in a good portion of them and maybe you can tell me if you agree or disagree, or if this subject has been brought up in the past and I should just shut up, is that while the bulk of the book seems to be rather well writen and really grabs you and draws you in, but the ending of many of her books seem to be such a let down from that pinnacle and anti-climatic. Well that's all I have to say for now and this is probably more than just my $.02 so I'll stop writing now. -Derrick ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Mar 1999 12:59:50 -0800 From: "L. Now if they'd let us have the source code of the OS.......(if you haven't been following the technobabble, don't worry. Sorry. I'll stop now.) On the favorite/least favorite books thread: My favorite Mercedes Lackey book changes, but it is always one of LHM books. I really like books where you know what the character is thinking. I found that even though I have little in common with the main character, I could relate to him very well, because the books were written so well. My other favorites are the Arrows books and By the Sword. I didn't like the later stuff so well. I still liked them, and they still passed the would-I-rather-be-watching-tv test with flying colors, but they just weren't as good as LHM and Arrows. (I've read all of the Velgarth books except the Oath books, which I will read as soon as I find copies of them.) I wanted to read more about characters and less about plot, I guess. As I see it, there are 3 basic approaches that most authors use when writing a book: a) I have this interesting character, now what can he/she/it go do/what made them this way/etc.? (I tend to like these the best) b)I have this nifty idea for something that can happen, now who should go do it? (Some of these can be pretty good) c) I have this nifty idea for a device that....(arrgghhh. I tend to really hate these.) Obviously, good books are mingling of these, rather than just one, but it seems that most authors start with one of these, judging from what they end up with. If the character is interesting, then I tend to like the book. Although some books that are mostly about a setting or a plot can be interesting too, if I'm in the right mood. I have to agree with just about everybody else, I wasn't fond of the Silver Gryphon. I was reading it (at about 3:00 the morning I might add, I got all 3 Gryphon books for Christmas and stayed up all night reading all 3 in a row) and I though hmm...this is a neat story........then at the end of the book I was like "that's IT? That the WHOLE BOOK? There isn't any more? WHAT!" My favorite non-Mercedes Lackey books would probably have to be Don't Bite the Sun, by Tanith Lee. It's weird, but very good. (It's mostly about the character, and in a very interesting sci/fi setting) I also rather liked Virtual Mode, by Piers Anthony. ***ducks various varieties of thrown sheep from the portion of the list that can't stand Piers Anthony books*** My all-time least favorite book would have to be Julie of the Wolves, by Jean Craighead George. I know some people really like it, and I usually like that genre (surviving in the wilderness with dogs/wolves involved), but I REALLY, REALLY hated that book. Urgh. Ellen shena Liha'irden said: >Let's see: My favorite Misty is "By the Sword," I've read it five times, >and if anyone can break my record, let me know! :-) hmm......***counts on fingers*** nope...I think I've only read that one 3 or 4 times so far. I've read the LHM books at least 6 or 7 times, though. (It's all the more impressive/pathetic when you realize that I hadn't read any of this until August...:)) some people were talking about the art in the books(I'm too lazy to go find them and quote them, sorry) I personally am not terribly fond of the interior art in general, but I tend to like most of the cover illustrations. (Although that may just be that they are so good in comparison to the covers of most of the fantasy or sci/fi that I read. I tend to read Tanith Lee stuff published back in the 70's and it seems that DAW had the theory "forget figuring out what the book is about! Let's stick a scantily-clad woman on the cover! Yeah! That's it!") I really like the covers for the LHM books, although I'm still not sure who the naked woman in the upper left corner of Magic's Pawn is.......I guess DAW still had a tendency to the Random Naked Women theory at the time...oh well........ Well, I'm sure I can think of more things that I want to say as soon as I send this, but oh well, it's already way too long, so I'll scamper off now. L.J.
