Sigh, weather like this just makes me want to curl up with a book and hot chocolate and not drive. Heck of a time for spring break. I thought I would jump into this discussion: Least fav Misty series: The whole Gryphon series. I just couldnt get into it like most of her other books. I have never really figured out what I dont like about them and I really havemeant to try to get into it but no luck so far. Favorite Misty books: I like the first three series LHM, AoQ and Oathbound. Maybe it was just that I had more opportunity to read back when those books came out and dont have the time now. But I really liked those characters and felt like I could immerse myself in their lives. MOst of my favorite books are those that I can curl up with and completely tune out the world. I like to have characters who you feel like you know as a friend or at least can feel strongly about. I do admit that a strong plot helps to wrap me up too tho. As Cennydd mentioned, a well-balanced book is perfect for me not just character and not just plot. Hello again to all the "oldies" from a few years ago and thanks for the welcome back. As Cennydd > mentioned, a well-balanced book is perfect for me not just character and > not just plot. > > I have to agree with you there ... although I do love Dickens, which has WAY to many characters and sometimes extremely convoluted plots.... oh well... Favorite Misty: AOTQ - with perhaps the first one edging the other two out by a nose. Although my favorite character is probably Tremaine (which i'll go into at length if anyone wants to hear.....) Least Favorite Misty: Di Tregards *hides behind two giant sheep* although there's one redeeming character in 'em (I think y'all know who :-) One of my Favorite non-Misty: Mirror of Her Dreams/A Man Rides Through by Donaldson. I re-read these once a year and have since they came out - usually in the spring. Getting to be 'bout time now.... Least favorite non-misty: hmmmm.... Iron Dragon's Daughter - no wait, anything I've read by Gail Baudino (sp?) [I read two hoping that perhaps they would change... silly me] - no, wait, the original Conan books (with disgusting prevalence of women-hating) - no, wait .... unfortunately after reading fantasy/sci-fi for over two decades the list gets long...:-) Obmisty: I've noticed that people have put down different least favorite characters. Was the person you put down as your least favorite chosen because a) you just didn't like them as a character (bad deeds or whatever) or b) you just didn't think they were interesting or c) you didn't think they were well developed/well written or d)some combination of the above. just curious. Start right now before you have to worry about living expenses and awful stuff like that. I have been saying that I would like to write for soooo long but now I'm finally doing it. Writing is so great and so much fun. You don't have to set it in stone that you WILL be a writer but give it a try. If you manage to get an entire book written then nothing can stop you, it can only slow you down. (Blayze steps down from the podium of encouragement and resumes normal quiet hiding-in-the-corner behaviour.) Oh yeah, MLML Obmisty: I just finished reading Bardic Voices books 1-3 and am on pg. 85 of Four & Twenty Blackbirds. I really expected to see more about the Free Bards. Instead all I find is an investigator trying to find out who is killing people with /some/ connection to music. Does it get better or is this just a murder mystery that happens to be set in the same place as the other three books so it was added on as book 4. Please someone tell me it gets better. I've been reading them because I really enjoy music. Somehow F&TB doesn't seem to deserve being called a "Bardic Voices" book. Actually, my least favorite characters tend to be most of the villains in Misty, and for all of those reasons (although "c" most of all). Misty can write some really great protagonists, but her villains tend to be pretty flat. Examples: Ancar and Hulda stand out immediately, as do most of the elf villains. They're just evil. No reason, little motivation, they're just evil. I prefer my bad guys to have a little depth. And, on the undying "favorite books" thread..... I've already given my least favorite Misty as _When the Bough Breaks_. Most favorite is muy hard; I really like By the Sword (which I've read more than 8 times, sorry to break that record), the second half of Arrow's Fall (but the first half is a strong contender for my least favorite), and (sorry, Cennydd) Magic's Pawn. Most favorite non-Misty: anything by the great, the one, the only, Guy Gavriel Kay. (I blame this all on Cennydd. I was perfectly content until he had to go and mention this amazing author a couple years back; as if I didn't already have precious little free time.) Least favorite non-Misty: I would say The Red Badge of Courage, which I was required to read at age 9, but I don't remember anything whatsoever about it besides not liking it. So my answer is probably The Pelican Brief by John Grisham. It's nothing but a long, drawn-out car chase, sans cars. His first book, A Time to Kill, was good, but I haven't liked the others I've read. On a complete tangent, I'm currently reading A Game of Thrones, by George R. Martin, and loving it (except that it's one that switches viewpoints a lot, which can be good, but there's this one character I really really like and only hearing about her every sixty pages or so is going to drive me crazy, I just know it). Having proscrastinated far too long, I go to study Cellular & Developmental Bio. Pray for me. The preist-mage Ardiss does get involved, as well as Kingsford, and a connected villian...who is, of course, out for revenge. I'm not sure that it should be a "Bardic Voices" book, but I did like the char. development of Ardiss. It did "end" the villian in a more permanent fasion this time, but if you don't like murder mysteries with a hint of romance thrown in, then you might not think that it does get better! Van mentioned that his daughter, Jisa, might get chosen, but it would be an unbonded choosing because Jisa would be King's Own - bonded to Taver. Maybe it would be a Companion hanging out with her - like Florian did with Karal - and acting like she'd been chosen, but without the deep bond so that Taver make that bond when Shavri died. *She pats her hair inefectively and apologizes for the long speach...Tosses bouncy-ball sheep everywhere and then ducks as one rebounds off the walls right for her...* Wind to thy wings, Listsibs. For example, most of the "bad guys" in the Anita Blake books seem to have some reason for what they do. I still generally find them loathsome, but it's not as much a matter of "no reason, just evil." There are certainly some who fall into that category, but not all. Or (gad, I'm referencing Robert Jordan -- shoot me now) Elaida, the Red Sedai in the Wheel of Time series. I definitely don't like her. Not one little bit. But she's not senselessly evil -- she just has skewed priorities. (Unless we learn something new in Path of Daggers, which I haven't read yet.) I tend to think that the "two people who want fundamentally different things are in opposition" deal is usually a little more interesting than Fighting the Forces of Pure Evil (tm). > Okay, the bad news... rumor has it he has a new one out ..... there goes a weekend > or two...I am also a big fan of his - Tigana is probably my favorite, although I > also really like The Lions of al-Rassan. I just never liked her. Wait, that's not true. I sort of liked her the first time I read the series, but then I reread it and couldn't ~stand~ her. Ugh. I also don't like Talia, but I'm not really sure why. *smacks forehead* Oh wait, that's right! She slept with her life-bonded's best friend. *glower* She was too... too... too ~passive~. She never told anyone about those threatening notes, for example. If she'd just ~told~ someone instead of being a silly twit, she never would have been attacked. That whole "Oh poor Talia" chorus just rang a little false with me. It was like I was being pushed to sympathise with her, it wasn't subtle enough. I've been the target of the kind of bullies that were hounding her, and guess what? She let them control her, which is what they wanted. They played her like a cheap guitar. ~This~ is the Queen's Own, the person who is supposed to be a pillar of strength for the country? There isn't a single instance when I liked Talia. So I guess that's d), a combination of all of the above. Thank you Blayze for your words of encouragement. No, Four & Twenty Blackbirds isn't about the Free Bards, it's about Tamsin, Wren's cousin, and a certain mage who showed up before. It deals with the results of the first three books and A Cast of Corbies. ~~~~~~~** FLUFF **~~~~~~~ Elsa stumbles out of the mists, brushing snow off of herself... "Hi all, guess what? School was cancelled again today." She snaps her fingers and is suddenly in comfysnugglywarm pants, too-big shirt, and socks. Elsa pulls out her Fluff Pen and aims it at all the Newbies. The Pen sparkles and then goes into a small fireworks display, with the result that all the Newbies suddenly find themselves in possession of dragon-shaped trinkets and sheep-shaped chocolate chip cookies. << Tarsi jumps on Elsa and licks her face :I like this one! She's not mean to me, like a certain mage I know...: Dawnfire sighs, Well Elsa ,looks like you're in for it now. * Tarsi proceeds to fawn all over Elsa*>> Elsa giggles in delight as Tarsi bowls her over, and starts playing with him like a little cub, somehow managing to snag some yummy Honeydew melon, too. ~~~~~~~** End Fluff **~~~~~~~ Wind to thy wings and joy to thy heart! I, too, love his work, and have reread them all several times -- he's one of my very favorite authors, along with Misty, Anne McCaffrey and MZBradley. I've checked on new Misty books, and here's what Books-in-print can tell me: 2 new books listed for 1999: Werehunter, from Baen (apparently a short story collection) and The Black Swan, from DAW. This might be another fairy tale, but I don't know that, just a guess, based on the title. I'm enjoying everyone's discussion on favorite vs least favorite books, authors and titles. I agree totally about Silver Gryphon, in that I didn't much like it, either. I Misty book I reread the most, si probably "By The Sword, though I often just start in the middle. One of my favorite all-time books is Illusions, by Richard Bach. Somehow I find it very uplifting and strengthening, though I'm not sure why. It's the book I read when I'm down and need a lift (or a kick in the pants). Well, back to the library gig.
