I'd have to say either Chrome Circle or the Tarma/Kethry/Kerowyn books. Hate to break the records out there, but I've read "By the Sword" at least 15 times, and the "Oath" books at least 20 or 30 times each. *g* On least favorite Misty books....The Bardic books. I've never been able to get into those. I have no reason either; sometimes you just don't like a book or series. On my favorite non-Misty books, I'd have a hard choice there. Christopher Rowley and his Dragon books for sure, and all of David Eddings' series (except End Game). I'm waiting for the latest in MZB's latest Darkover trilogy to come out to finish that. Oh, and Lisanne Norman's books are really good, too. I guess all those authors tend to flesh out their characters a lot, like Misty has, and that really makes for a good read. Also, some good plots. And, finally, on least favorite non-Misty books; THERE'S TOO MANY TO REMEMBER!!! *g* James Dean look-alike sheep to all!!!! (Sorry, just thinking of FX!) Li'nia Stormdancer, |"I'm a-thinkin'. Message-ID: Okay. I've remained silent for a long time, but there are a few things I wish to say on the long list of books that has been put out as favorites, least favorites, etc. I'll try not to offend anyone. First of all, my least favorite Misty book is not Silver Gryphon, as most people have claimed. It's either The Robin and the Kestrel or the Eagle and the Nightingales. I just didn't really like those, although I liked the Lark and the Wren. My favorite Misty is AotQ. Just because. Have you ever read just the first page and the last page? That's what I call plot, and I think it's just really impressive for a first novel. My favorite non-Misty is The Rowan, by Anne McCaffrey. Again, just because. My least favorite non-Misty is Catcher in the Rye. I just couldn't stand it. Although, if I hadn't learned to skim before last month, Tolstoy's Resurrection would have so far surpassed it that I would not believe. And I had to write a paper on it. *shrudder* My least favorite character: Elspeth. Why? Character inconsistancy. Just a couple random quotes to back that up: AFall, p 130, Selenay to Talia, after the fight with Elspeth: "She has a temper, but once it cools she doesn't hold a grudge." WofFate, p 417, Darkwind thinking (shortly after they meet, granted, but he seems to be a good judge of character, and I don't see why Misty would put it in and not correct it if it weren't true) about Elspeth: "Hold a grudge? Dear gods, she _treasures_ a grudge, long past when it should have been dead and buried. She would, without doubt, pursue an enemy into his grave, then make a dancing-floor of it. Then return from time to time for a jig, just to keep the triumph alive." And I like the child Elspeth, too. I wanted to read about her, not whoever it was Misty wrote about. Can you tell I've read these books way too many times? I've never been able to pick a favorite character. Too many to choose from. I haven't read any of the urban books or anything, I'm not sure I'd like them." Oh ye of little faith! If at first Misty doesn't succeed, try, try again! Although I personally liked the Bardic books (although I hated the covers, especially the second! Eugh! *Drinks a quick draught of Sheep Liquor*), I would still recomend trying her other urban fantasies. IMHO, the best one is Chrome Circle, if only because it doesn't deal with any of the "adult" stuff. *** "...Shannara. I loved those books." Amen! I loved them too! "They all had faults: Par comes to mind..." Right on! I hated Par! Didn't even read his parts except where I had to... Kay has a new book out? Really? Really? (Suddenly knows what she's doing for part of spring break.) Anybody know the title? I couldn't pick a favorite of his, 'cause I haven't read one I didn't like yet. I love them all. And most of them can still make me cry. Beautiful, beautiful writing. -- Discussions about Guy Gavriel Kay are enough to make me do a very rare delurk... The latest one I have is "Sailing to Sarantium". It's been out in trade paperback since sometime in the latter half of last year in the UK and here in Australia, and it's what we've come to expect from GGK, beautiful writing and complex characterisation. Be prepared though, as it's Book 1 of a two part series, and I haven't heard anything about the release date for the next one. Hallo ^_^ > Um..what is Slayers? From my skimming I've gathered it's not a >Buffy >thing but it sounds interesting anyway. If this is what I think you're talking about... Slayers is a moderately recent anime that's been released commercially in the US last year. It's a fun mix of sword-fantasy comedy and some serious stuff mixed in (the serious parts aren't as good as the tongue-in-cheek humor of most of the series) starring Lina Inverse, an intrepid sorceress in search for food and money, and her partner, Gourry Gabriev, a very strong, stupid blonde. (i swear, that's really the description you can give him) and some other people they pick up on the way. There are 3 Slayers TV series (Slayers, Slayers Next, Slayers Try) and some OAVs and movies which are in a different continuity. With that, I introduce myself to the list. Name's Monica, and and I devoured MLackey books when I was younger (I've read several of her books 10+ times... but then again, I've read way too many books 10+ times) I'm not a huge fan now, but I was feeling nostalgic and subbed myself on. ^_^ Fav MLackey book(s): LHM series -- even after all this time (I think I read them in 7th grade) I can pick them up and read them all over again. That's saying something. I think that Vanyel qualifies as a honorary angsting bishonen and I would really really be interested in a manga of LHM (say, drawn by CLAMP, but anyway...) Least Fav MLackey book: I have some I don't particularly like -- esp the later stuff (Owl* and some of the Storm books (tho i didn't really mind them)) but one book I really _Detested_ was If I Pay Thee Not In Gold -- the worst of piers anthony combined with teh worst of MLackey. bad... very very bad. Fav non M-lackey book: Wow, I have _so_ many ^_^ but some favorites are Guy Gavriel Kay's books, especially Tigana. (his Fionvarr books aren't as good, but still worth reading) Robin Hobb, Michelle West (her Hunter books were good, her empire books are _very_ good) I liked Anne Bishop's first book, and am looking forward to her second, and Lynn Flewelling's books are fun. Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion series is good, especially the Elric books. I'm forgetting so many, and leaving out my fav manga (Kaori Yuki, CLAMP, Nakamura Yoshiki and Yamazaki Takako are some manga-ka i rather enjoy) Least Fav non M-lackey book: Jane S. Fancher's Ring series -- I really liked it, until we got to the copout ending where everything ends oh-so happily, and a character got killed off for no reason. ARrgh. I was just really really irritated at this book. There are countless other stinkers I've had to read through to get to the good stuff, but oh well... Hopefully this will pass the Copyright Test as there are no mentions of characters, names, races etc. directly. Anyhoo, you know that you've been influenced by Mercedes Lackey when ... 1. You have an obsession with bleach and don't understand why you don't look good in white. ("Face it. When you wear white, you look dead.") 2. Any horse you ride must be either white and extreamly beautiful, or grey and extrordinarily ugly. 3. When things go bump in the night, you call the local race car chapter instead of the police. ("Look, lady...") Umm ... I guess I need an OBMisty here. Urk. Ah ha! While reading the Oath books did anyone else get the impression that Misty favored Tarma over Kethry? Tarma gets WAY more book time, etc, and while Kethry IS an important char, it's most often Tarma's POV that's used? I think that maybe it's because Kethry has a little more of a 'generic' background, being a mage, traveller, blond, etc. while Tarma is someone created out of a culture that Misty has created all by herself.
