"I just returned from Part 1 of the Grand College Tour, on my supposed vacation, when it was snowing! But on a bright note, there are cool JYA's to England! How would all you UK residents feel about being stuck with one Britain-mad American for a year?" Ambermoon gets herself a cup of hot chocolate, snags a few passing sheep for pillows, and settles down with her battered coppies of LHM. ***end fluff*** I know others have done this before me, and done it well, but I shall also offer a defense of Elspeth. She's one of my favorite characters, probably because she reminds me of myself. Most people I know think I'm a bitch, and contrary is my nature. I love her for being contrary. She doesn't do it out of spite or her own self-importance, she does it because of her responsibility toward her country and people. And a certain pig-headedness and refusal to be manipulated, which I applaud. And if that sometimes carries her too far, then that's a risk we all run. For claims she is conceited and self-centered; she thinks she's ugly and unwanted, and her brassy attitude is a defense to keep people at a distance. Half the country mistrusts her and expects her to murder her mother, but she goes out of her way to help them anyway. I think she was fully justified in her treatment of Skif: he was being, in her words, a "pain in the tail", and I probably would have been a lot ruder to him. Elspeth is a person who makes a decision and follows it, no matter what happens to her because of it, and I really respect her for that. As for Talia, while I also felt that the "poor little Talia" bit was carried a little too far, I like her. When I was ten I was in a position quite similiar to hers with my classmates, though I handled it differently. I tried everything: I ignored them, I yelled at them, I tried multiple times to talk to the teacher, but nothing worked. Finally my parents got involved, and it stopped. Now, in a differrent school with different people, it continues, but I'm no longer 10 years old. I understand her fear to talk, even though I did. I also fully approve of her sleeping with Kris. That wasn't about romantic love; they both knew that. They had spoken of her feelings for Dirk: they slept together fully aware they were making no lasting commitment in that manner. They loved each other as best friends; it was a healing experience for Talia, and it was good that her first sexual experience was with someone that she trusted utterly. Dirk not being able to handle was is his problem. Both Kris and Talia were very open with him about it. That's what I've always loved about Kris, his fundamental honesty. On another note, I attended a great lecture at one of the colleges I visited on homophobia. And I was wondering: I don't really see Valdemar as a place with GSA's, or anything of the sort to help people. It's certainly not a tolerant place. Keren was apprehensive about telling Talia (though I was rather surprised about the Holderkin). It was accepted in Firesong, but that's because he was exotic and they knew nothing about the Tayledras ("How many Tayledras does it take to make a mating-cirle?" "One, if he's flexible!" - from somewhere in WoFury). Vanyel couldn't let his father know until he was 18 because his father could pack him off to the priesthood, all legally. Do you think that could still happen in modern Valdemar? There was that whole bit in AotQ, with Neave, when Elcarth speaks of changing laws to help children, and Elspeth mentions it again later, but would it apply to that? Or what about places like Rethwellan, which at least in Vanyel's day was heavily intolerant? Dark the Night? anyway, sorry for the second post and really old subject, but I was flipping through WoFury (not LHM after all), and I found the passage about Firesong during the trip through Hardorn, and the loyal Singer of Fire felt compelled to once more come to his defense. for whoever once complained that he couldn't think about anything but sex, he spends most of this time saying how sickened he is by the condition of the land and people, and only a little time thinking of himself. This just goes to show that he is a Healer-Adept, first and foremost, just like Moondance or anyone else. And as for claims that he's the most conceited person in Velgarth: "Despite the arrogant poses he kept, mainly for his own amusement, Firesong knew he could influence the natural order, not control it." (p. 350 pb, WoFury) He also worries about Nyara, and the effect her role has on her. The scheme for giving money to children was also his. And when he does feel sorry for himself over lack of partners, he tells himself it isn't important and he should stop thinking about it, and doesn't act on any of it. Can you condemn someone for their thoughts? His actions don't reflect utter self-centeredness. sorry about that sheep carrying soapboxes to all, Ambermoon Singer of Fire Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 22:45:12 PST From: "Sorana Stargem" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Bleach/Least fave and fave stuff Message-ID: <19990317064513.214.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla all! That's what happened to Moondance's eyes and his were brown too. It's mentioned specifically in MPawn, but I don't know the page number and I refuse to go look it up right now. My least Favorite Misty character would have to be the Bad Guy (whose name I can't remember) in Sacred Ground. I _really_ wanted to do something worse to him than just smaking him over the head with a board. That's rare for me you know. My least favorite Misty book would have to be Fortress of Frost and Fire, and that's only because of a truly mind numbing number on the wall climbing. My least favorite book, period, is The Invisible Man. Not only did it nearly bore me to death, but it had crulety to a poor innocent kitty-cat in it. It was in a scene just before Keth healed and talked to Devaril. The powder was dusted on a fighter's arm just before it was stitched up. Elspeth is one of the more completely realistic characters in the books because she was so stubborn. A favorite scene of mine was when Darkwind gently put her in her place for acting so royal when in had no bearing on how they treated her. Her reactioooon was sooo realistic in that she had gotten angry but held it in and left to think about it. She also seems to have the most tiffs with her companion. Talia's relationship with Kris has brought up many points. Given the circumstances I dooon't see anything wrong with it. Strong emotions like the ones they were feeling usually bring about thse types of feelings. Besides, how two attractive and good-hearted people stuck in a mega-snowstorm for a long period of time not become sexually attracted to each other. And Heralds are known for their promiscuousness (speeling sucks I know) (woops, did it again). Disclaimer : My "o" button keeps getting stuck. In response to the Elspeth~Talia thing, I missed it, so I'm styaing out of it. But I agree with the "No one true way" rule on the list. People should be accepted for everything that they are. Instead of pushing our own personal views into others faces, it's better to try and understand where they're coming from. I think that people learn more through learning what others believe and why. That's all about that. As for Alexia's statement about so many books: THERE ARE NEVER ENOUGH BOOKS!!!!!!!! I live for books and reading. I'm found in Barnes & Noble weekly. Half of everything I earn goes towards buying books!! In fact, I had to redecorate my room just so that I could put in more book shelves. (It also gave me a great excuse to paint it too!) I'm in the process of collecting all the books I truly loved as a child, and collecting more books on faerie tales. I plan to keep them until I have children and then pass them on. Elsa: Yes, you can still get the Lammas Night CD from Firebirds. If it isn't posted on their webpage, ask them about it because I saw it in the last cataloge I got from them. :) Happy Hunting! Dianestar: YES!!! If Faulkner wasn't already dead, I'm of the opinion that he should be *severely reprimanded* (acctually, I wanted to say something else, but some of you may like Faulkner, like my Uncle..). I have a problem with authors when I can't find a period for three pages!!!!!!! Intruders in the Dust was an Optional book for my Freshman Lit. class. I TRIED to read it, and I TRIED to like it. But I just couldn't. But as for the different colors, did anyone here know that the Neverending Story was originally published in red and green ink. One was for Bastian's conscienceness, and the other was for the story he was reading. My copy is all in black, but I thought that was kind of interesting... Khenta: Don't feel too bad about lumping all of us Norteamericanos together. Unfortunatley, I know too many people who whould say somthing like this: "Where's Chile?" "On the stove." I find it better to judge each person individually, as though they were your equal in every way, unless they are your superior at something. I find people respect me more if I treat them such, and because of it, I have many international friends, including Hev (New Zealand) and Kerstin (Germany) "Hi there!!!" I'd love to get to know any of you list-sibs off list, so feel free to mail me off list, especially if you have any questions about good ole' Atlanta, GA! (CFWD). ObMisty: Thank you sooooo much to Lady Deb for ordering the Vows & Honor in one for me. :) I'm now looking to get the LHM series bound in one volume. If ANY one here has any clue as to where I can get it, pleeeeeze tell me. (Already tried Doubleday).
