In the Wiccan religion when you are born your parents give you the name they wish you to have. Like my childs name is to be Darshay Stefen (YES named after characters in Mistys books, pathetic huh)but because he will be raised Wiccan or say Tayledras when he is old enough, which I think in our religion is about 13 but dont quote me on it. He will choose his name. I choose mine and my teacher chose hers as well. When you choose yes the person you were dies and you have to go through a ritual telling the god and goddess "Look i am not who I was before I am now this person!" In my case my chosen name, when I chose a long time ago, is Shadowstar Sunsinger. Oh and to let you know I chose that name LONG before I know of Sunsinger from Mistys books. I was so happy to find a group of people that likes to talk about one of my favorite subjects. I have been reading Misty's books for a long time, To be exact I am having to replace some of my earliest ones, because they fell apart from over reading. I believe Daren was chosen because he was the Queen's lifebond and because of his earthsense. In "Mage Storms" they needed that earthsense to help protect Valdemar. If I remember correctly Vanyel wasn't chosen until after his channels were blasted opened. But I think most Heralds are chosen before their gifts surface. Well I don't truely for sure know the answer to this but I think that a companion brings out the gifts. There was no mention of Talia's gift before she was chosen. His gift may have been dormen and being chosen brought out. It also might have had something to do with Selenay but only the Companions know for sure on that one. No where in the book, that I can remember, did It ever mention that he had any gifts, not even Mindspeech. It was my understanding that Companions only chose those people who had some type Psychic ability, (not to mention impeccable morals). Did I just miss where they mentioned Daren's gift? Or do you think he was just 'Chosen' because the Companions were aware, somehow, that he was to be Selenay's lifebonded and they knew he would be accepted more easily if he was a Herald.<< I don't think it's necessary for those Chosen to have shown any ability prior to that Event. Talia showed no talent until she met Rolan, if I recall right. And I can't really recall (all my ML books are on their way to Korea), but did Elspeth show any Talent prior to being Chosen by Gwena? I don't think that being Selenay's mate would have made much of a difference; they didn't Choose her first husband. But that's just my take on it.....I've had WAY to much caffeine today.... *Li'nia waves a rather shaky hand to everyone and walks back into the shadows. Remember, in one of the Arrows books (either late AFlight or early AFall, don't remember) there's the problem with the feuding families and the poisoned well, and Kris seems to disagree with Talia on what to do. Later, however, she figures out that he was trying to manipulate her to see if she could be manipulated, and that part of his orders included manufacturing emotions to see if *that* would affect her. Now, I hate to play the heavy, but here goes. About the Kosovo message: I would absolutely agree that it is an extremely important subject. However, this is not the forum for discussing it. Anything completely off-topic generally has to go through Auntie Mel; if she thinks it's appropriate, she'll post it, or that's the way it's worked in the past. Another way to bring it up is to mention in a list-related post, "Anybody interested in participating in a discussion about X, please email me off-list and we'll get a forum going." I hate to come down on this because it sounds like I don't think the topic is important; I do. But mail to the list should be about something at least vaguely related to Mercedes Lackey, because that's what the list is. (*This was not a flame. Had this been an actual flame, personal and probably venomous language would have been invoked.*) Becky -------------- In general, France is a safe travel destination, though travelers are advised that, from time to time, it is invaded by Germany. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Mar 1999 17:12:00 -0800 From: Obsidian To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: [Usenames...] Message-ID: <370024DB.598BCB72-+AT+-softhome.net> Heyla, POSSIBLE SPOILERS........ Yes, it's in Owlflight. I think Darian is talking to Nightwind or Starfall, if I'm not mistaken and theit talking about why certain Tayledras have the names they have, such as Summerdance, which is childish but not entirely so. I know there was a certain character in the book called Darkstone who named himself that because he was very dark - I mean in personality, not skin - and was as hard as a stone - again in personality. And everyone excepted that as his name because that was the way he was.
