It's very refreshing for the human spirit to hear or read about others overcoming problems or succeeding where it was never thought possible. I think we're all a little sadistic in nature, too. I mean, how many times are more problems caused by people gawking over someone else's tragedies? I don't know about you, but I like to read stories where the character starts out being "perfect", is brought low (or to their senses), and comes back to accomplish the mission or whatever the goal is. I admit it, I'm a little sadist, but so are most of us, so I enjoy the company. Shioru: don't worry about the voices in you head. Okay, this clarifies things. I see what you mean. My disagreement stems from the fact that I do not consider the soul and the "self" to be the same thing. Rather, I see the soul (if such a thing exists) as merely one part of the whole identity which makes up the self. In this sense, the soul is the "divine spark" that pre-exist life and persists past death, but it does not necessarily include experience or memory or personality. Obviously, in Misty's work, it is possible for some hints of previous incarnations to persist on the soul. This makes the analogy to a palimpsest a good choice. A palimpsest is a piece of velum or some other writing surface which has been written on and from which the writing has been removed so that it can be reused. On a palimpsest, it may be possible to read the deep impressions of whatever was previously written on the paper. So, apparently in Misty's world, it may be possible for deep impressions of the previous personality to be read on the soul. That would explain how Stefen "reminded" Van of 'Lendel. However, even in the case of reading the impressions of previous writings on a palimpsest, you wouldn't claim that the palimpsest is still the previous written work. It is a different work, which bears traces of a previous incarnation. > I am sorry If what I said offended any Stefen lovers out there I > didn't say it to offend any of you. as a matter of fact I actually > like Stefen a lot as character as well but I think that a big part of > him includes Tylendel who is one of my alltime favorite characters. Perhaps this is also an explanation on our different opinions. For me, since I dislike 'Lendel, I prefer to view Stefen as a separate character and person. For you, since you like 'Lendel, it is nice to think of Stefen as a continuation of the character that you liked. Thus do the personal likes and dislikes of each reader determine how they interpret the text. =) On Wed, 31 Mar 1999, Julia Gray wrote: > I really hope that it doesn't turn out that either Van or Firesong or > Elspeth are related to Urtho. Ooooo! While we're on the subject, let me take a moment to plug a book that I have "discovered" (of course, so have a lot of other people: it was a NYT Best Seller): "Gifts of the Jews" by Thomas Cahill (the same auther who wrote "How the Irish Saved Civilization"). "Gifts" is a non-fiction religious history book which looks at how the "Western" worldview was based on fundamental values that are rooted in the Judaic religious experience. Whether you are Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Pagan, Agnostic or Atheist, this is a fascinating and eye-opening piece of scholarship. Cahill is not interested in theology (he makes no claims about the "rightness" of any religion), but is deeply interested in how religious beliefs and actions have profound influences on every aspect of our lives and beliefs. What does this have to do with the quote above? One of the gifts of the Jews that Cahill highlights is the change from a cyclic worldview to a progressive worldview (where progressive is understood as meaning "typified by a belief in the progression of events from a beginning point to an endpoint" and is the opposite of cyclic). Anyway, for anyone who might be looking for a good read that will make you think, I heartily recommend this book. For that matter, I also recommend "How the Irish Saved Civilization." I for one wouldn't!. As for perfection in characters, I usually think it is all show just like in people; sometimes the people we think are perfect, or who we think have perfect lives don't thin they do. I suppose it is human nature to want what we haven't got. Hmmmmm, enough thinking, my head is beginning to hurt!. As for the Tylendel/Stefan arguement, well I never really liked Tylendel, and Stefan is almost my favourite character (Vanyel still wins on that count), but I agree with Ceynedd when he said that the soul isn't the self. If Stefan had had anything more than Tylendel's soul then we would have had the cyclic thing happening, and everyone has the right to start a new life without the baggage of the old one?. Does anyone here read Katherine Kerr?. She had characters that were reborn into new lives but they had to not know who they were so they had a chance to make fresh choices. Starwind and Moonsong wanted a child, but niether of them could funtion with a woman. There was a Tayledras lady (I can't remeber her name) who was willing to have twins and let Van father them. Umm...I can't remember the girl's name, but the child that Starwind and Moonsong raised was named Brightstar, and that's Firesong's ancestor. Hope this helped! -Khisanth- _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I don't know why An'desha didn't say anything about it to Van...maybe he just didnt have the time, or didn't think of it? 'Cause I really don't think that Van would be angry with *An'desha*; he couldn't control what Ma'ar did-hell, he wasn't even *alive* then. Also, Van didn't have a problem with Karal, and Van spent most of his life as a Herald fighting Karsites. > .....do any of you get strange > looks when you > laugh out loud while reading??? Two things to say :> 1) The Di Tregarde books are starting to appear in Blackwells. Is there any order they ought to be read in, or can I just pick up the first one I see and understand what is going on? (Yes I know they're urban fantasy, and I have read KoGaS and StT ;> ) 2) As it says in the newbie fest (which of course you all read when you joined the list... the address is below if you've lost it) _Please_ use spoilers! Currently whatever the second Owl book is should be spoilered (this means leave about a screen of space before talking about it so those of us who haven't read it don't suddenly find out bits of plot) Over here in Oxford I have not yet _seen_ a copy of the second Owl book (and can't check the title cos Netscape is crashing) let alone had a chance to read it! The rule of thumb for when spoilers should be used is always if a book is hardback, and for the first 6 months of it being in paperback (after that most of us outside the US have had a chance to import it!). So please please do this :) Zen hugs and fluffy Easter sheep with chocolate and malt whisky for all (and soft drinks for the under 18s) Ailsa, member of the Council of Mist ____________________________________________________________________________ | Ailsa Reid areid-+AT+-brookes.ac.uk | | | | The newbie fest: http://www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/pers/misty/newbiefest.html | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Apr 1999 10:51:29 PST From: "Derrick O" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Sources Message-ID: <19990401185129.75997.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Hello All, I have a question for all you Misty addicts out there. I was wondering if any of you knew what sources Misty uses for her research particurarily in her SERRated Edge series? I'm doing some of my own writing on the side and it would help to know some good sources for elven legends and and stregnths and weaknesses. More in general if does anyone out there know any good sources for those kinds of legends? Thank you all very much. -Derrick Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Apr 1999 12:00:21 PST From: "Li'nia Stormdancer" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Vanyel & Andesha Message-ID: <19990401200022.66838.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla List-Sibs!! He probably figured that Andesha had nothing to do with it, so why "visit the sins of the father unto the son". Or in this case, the host of the soul of the one who killed him. I have no wish to become a member of the Order of Drifting Ashes! :-) And on a non-Misty note, have any of you read any of the books by J.V. Jones? I love her work, and am currently reading "The Barbed Coil". It's all about patterns in life, and I find myself drawn into those patterns when I'm reading. I'm kinda strange, though..... :-P *Li'nia creeps in the shadows of the Arena of Discussion and Contention, with Styx just a darker shadow behind her. They've only taken about 8 years to catch up, then ... we _are_ sadly deprived in England! (But I bought them in London years ago) Alternatively, try Amazon.co.uk for prices which use a more sensible $/£ exchange rate - even after paying postage it works out cheaper. >Is there any order they ought to be read in, or can I just pick up the >first one I see and understand what is going on? The books are more-or-less self-standing, so I wouldn't worry overmuch about the order. Judging by internal evidence, the "correct" order is probably: Children of the Night Burning Water Jinx High (and note a reference in JH to a student called Tannim ... ) >Zen hugs and fluffy Easter sheep with chocolate and malt whisky for all (and >soft drinks for the under 18s) Ah, a person of taste!
