Message-ID: <19990408.084809.3694.1.Songrunner-+AT+-juno.com> On the removing gifts question... I think it was mentioned in some book or other that the secret had been lost as to how to remove gifts, but that it might still be known in some obscure schools (sorry, no idea which book). The Haighleigh (sp?) also knew how to remove people's gifts, which they did to anyone that was deemed to be using them "improperly." The Bard thing has already been mentioned, so I won't go into that one again. As for Vanyel, if you remember, Stardance seems to imply something like that - "And if we cannot teach you control...we can and *will* contain you in such a way that you will pose no danger to others" (p.283 MPawn) That might not apply to actually removing the gift, but it's a thought. Some people (like Justyn in the Owl books), also seem to lose their gifts when going through some sort of physical trauma, like getting whacked off the head. I think that in most cases gifts are only removed due to abuse, or severely out-of-control circumstances, and since neither An'desha nor Vanyel ever abused their gifts, and both eventually came to appreciate their gifts and get them under control, then it wouldn't have applied in those situations. Here's a question to anyone that listens to Misty's music - on the Shadow Stalker cd, does anyone know what Lief Sorbie is saying on the background vocals in the song "Earth Spirit"? I've never been able to figure that one out. And did you know that the Owlflight cd's coming out? As for the Daren issue, it seemed to me that when Jasan chose him, although he was still a bit surprised, he was able to mindspeak fairly well with him, so that was probably one of Daren's gifts, even though it doesn't seem to have shown up until after he was chosen. Anyway, someone was inquiring about a good Xanth book to read (Xanth is hilarious). I suggest one of Pier's newest books, Faun&Games. Right now I'm reading A Spell for Chameleon (the very first Xanth book). Does anybody out there like Jenny Elf? Vanyel and Tylendel were star-crossed lovers, I think they were doomed from the start. Also Vanyel's parents didn't approve of the match, and Tylendel's "family" the Heralds didn't approve of him taking up with the arrogant brat Vanyel was at the begining of the book. There might be other similarities but I haven't looked at it a lot. Someone said something about a Shadow Stalker CD, and I had no clue what they were talking about. First of all...pardon the harshness of some of this, but...well...after hearing most of her book-based music (I'm still looking "magic, Moondust, and Melancholy") I would recommend "Shadow Stalker." It does not have the characters (one singer per character) that some of the other albums have, but Heather Alexander is one of the best folk (filk) singers that I have ever heard! "Freedom, Flight, and Fantasy" is also good although it is not about any of Misty's books. "Lovers, Lore, and Loss" is not bad either followed closely by "Heralds, Harpers, and Havoc" (the reason I put "Lovers, Lore, & Loss" ahead is because of the heartstring-tugging of some of the songs. (This is with a caveat-although I think that Misty is a great author, she should not try her career as a professional singer) "By the Sword" would be next. It's not fantastic, but it's not bad, and there are a few enjoyable tunes. "Oathbound" and "Oathbreakers" are a pair of cassettes that I would not recommend at all. I barely was able to listen to them once, and have never done so again. The production quality is substandard and the singing (tho in the case of Tarma, it's fitting) is also less-than-desirable. I liked it, too. It's not an outstanding book, but it's not bad, either. But it's been a few years since I read it, so I may be forgetting some aspects of it. > and since that book was co-written by piers anthony, i'm assuming he > must be pretty good too. my friend reads his stuff and she says to > try some of the Xanth (sp) books. anyone here have any suggestions > for a good PA book to read???? That depends on you. The first few Xanth books are good, but they deteriorate in quality after the first, oh, 8 or so. (There are about 20 of them now, I think.) The later ones are also juveniles, which may be a turn-off if your tastes are more sophisticated. The most widely loved Piers books are probably the Incarnations of Immortality series -- 7 books, starting with "On a Pale Horse". I recommend this whole series, especially the first and sixth books. Also good are the first three books of the Apprentice Adept series -- I forget the order, but I believe the titles are "Blue Adept", "Split Infinity" and "Juxtaposition". (Avoid the other 4 books of this series, after Piers re-opened it. The series was originally a trilogy, and should've stayed that way.) Piers has many other great books and series, but he also has some real losers (including a large number of his collaborations). In general, his oldest works are his best -- if you start reading one of his series and notice that, after a few books, it starts to go downhill, then stop reading that series, because it probably doesn't go back uphill. Beware, however, that Piers has a bit of a chauvinist streak, comparable to that of Robert A. Heinlein. If you found Heinlein's treatment of female characters offensive, you might not like Piers's books. (As with Heinlein, try to focus on the story and on the good characters, and overlook the flaws of the badly written characters.) Ironically, Piers has gotten better at his female characters in his later books (though it's too bad his plots didn't improve as well). -- Greg Wooledge | Distributed.NET http://www.distributed.net/ wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com | because a CPU is a terrible thing to waste. http://www.kellnet.com/wooledge/ | ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 Apr 1999 19:32:42 -0400 From: Abigail Laughlin To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Hellooooo?
