Remember that this is fantasy fiction, not science fiction, so it probably involves fire elementals -- even truth spell is implemented with little air elementals (the Vrondi). But on the other hand, Firestarting is mind magic, not "true magic", so it might not involve elementals directly, but I think it would likely tie into whatever energy source the elementals tie into. (Does Misty use "elemental planes" in her writings?) Above all, fire in magic-based fantasy literature is usually treated like a sort of substance -- this goes back to the alchemists, who thought of heat as a fluid. (I don't have the Thermodynamics background to discuss how true/false this is.) If Misty even gave much thought to it at all, she probably thought of something like "conjuring flame" -- causing a high amount of this fire-stuff to appear in a small place, resulting in combustion. -- Greg Wooledge | Distributed.NET http://www.distributed.net/ wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com | because a CPU is a terrible thing to waste. http://www.kellnet.com/wooledge/ | ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 19:18:07 PDT From: "Jessica Love" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: fire starting Message-ID: <19990411021808.49801.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla! Everyone's talking about fire starting, so I'll add my 2 cents. In Arrows of the Queen (I don't remember which book) Talia was learning about her gifts, didn't she watch Dirk training Griffon, and he had the fire starting gift. Griffon was seting this black chunk of rock on fire then Dirk told him to put it out and it was cool to the touch in moments. Maybe I'm imagining thing because it's been awhile since I read the book, but that's how I remember things. ObMisty: Anyway, I was looking back in Owlsight and how everyone hated the character Darian. Well, I think I've got an explanation: In Owlsight, unlike Owlflight, he acts more as an observer. It's interesting, because in this book he acts as an 'observer' and Keisha (the Healer) as the 'doer'. In this book at least, he's a lot like Herman Melville's character in Moby Dick: Ishmael. Throughout all of Moby Dick Ishmael sits back and observes what's going on around him. He doesn't 'do'. So you really don't have time to look into the depth of his character. Anyway, what I'm getting at is what character is more effective: the 'observer' or the 'doer'? I'm halfway throught the Fire Rose and it's so far very interesting. Can't wait till I start on the Bard series I got from the library...... Yep she does - Oathbound mutters darkly from time to time about the Abyssal planes, which is presumably where Bad Karsite Priests get demons from. [I wonder how the black-robe priests make sure they get useful demons and not ones like Thalhkarsh [sp?] - do they have a list?] If i ever thought about firestarting, when it was compared to Fetching i thought of it as Mind-grabbing some heat from the fire elementals' plane [do they ahve one of their own or share it with the vrondi and other elementals?] and applying it to what you want to burn. Although i like Kerstin's idea of moving molecules to make them hot...much less effort for the Firestarter. Shioru Sutherland said that there were definitely Haighlei still around - Geyr from the Skybolts as an example. I just got my own copy of BtS [yay!] and promptly reread it, so i want to quibble - no-one ever said Geyr was Haighlei, just that he was from very far south. And considering that the Haighlei empire is way, way west of Valdemar etc., he might be from an un-Haighlei southern country. Then again, Emperor charliss complained about not being able to expand southwards because there was another empire there, so maybe that was the Black Kings...it's a Mist-ery [haha] ah well, that's enough rambling for now, so i'll go back behind my pillar.
