Yeah I did notice that. I've been wondering about that, but what I 
figure is that since people are only bothered when they use their 
magic, using a small amount of magic quickly wouldn't call much extra 
attention to herself and would quickly disapate if she didn't use any 
other magic.

Hey all, just thought I would throw in my $.02.

Rather than snipping Tim & Tiffanie's eloquent
message, I'm going to assume (yes, ass-u-me, <g>) that
everyone read it.

I've come up against copyright law from working in an
academic library, so I have a bit more of a grasp than
the average layperson.  However, any
lawyers/Councillors out there are free to correct me
<BG>!

If all Orchyd wanted to do was to start a discussion
list, I cannot see any way that Misty's lawyers could
stop that.  Copyright usually deals with profits
and/or the use of large chunks of a work for non-study
purposes (at least the parts of the Canadian copyright
law that I dealt with).  Unless US law is radically
different, simple discussion does not (AFAIK) violate
copyright.  IE, we are not using Misty's characters or
universes for profit, we are not RPG, or writing
fanfic.  After all, if discussion was a violation of
copyright, it would be awfully hard to teach modern
literature in universities, yes?  What I would like to
think is that the big, bad lawyers misunderstood
Orchyd's intent.

I will continue to read & enjoy Misty's work, as long
as she appeals to me as a writer; this will be
tempered by sadness that she feels that she has to so
fiercly protect her creations.  <soapbox time>  After
all, she is a genre writer and while I am not a reader
of the NYT Book Review, I cannot recall seeing her
works on the top bestseller lists.  Not like John
Grisham or Stephen King.  If anyone would like to
correct me, feel free <off soapbox, ducking any
flaming sheep>

On a lighter note, if anyone would like to start a
pool as to when this baby is going to be born (the drs
don't know), I will contribute 12 dozen chocolate chip
mint sheep cookies as a prize.

No, he didn't. The Shadows were already gone by then. ***spoiler for anyone 
who for some reason, still hasn't seen the end of season 4*** He died 
because he hooked himself up to the Alien Healing Machine to save Ivanova 
when she was injured in one of the final battles near Earth, against the 
new Earth Destroyers that incorporated Shadow technology. Sorry, I'll quit 
babbling about B5 now.... it's the other main fictional world that I follow 
besides Velgarth.......

Oh, did any of you notice that in Firebird's winter catalog, they said that 
Misty said that Di Tregarde went to B5 and fell out an airlock? I guess 
she's a fan too.....

Ok, now something related to the list topic! Yay! Ok, this is sort of on 
topic. My friend who has read pretty much all of Misty's books (I've only  
 read the Velgarath ones) said that Misty made a passing reference to a 
Gordon Lightfoot song in one of them. Does anyone know which book? And what 
other books I'd have to read before I could read it? I want to start that 
series next, because of that...

Heyla all!!!

Hmm, well i'm presently about 80 pages away from the end of Storm-
Breaking (which, by the way i am ejoying immensely).  So, anyway i'm 
thinking....

Remeber in AotQ when Talia was chosen, she was told that she could 
never mind-speak with Rolan??? Okay well that's all well and good, 
but it seems to me that throughout Arrows, into Mage Winds, and 
ESPECIALLY in the Storm books, mind speech becomes a much more hmmmm, 
what's a good word? ...casual thing.

All of a sudden in the Storm books, anyone who has mindspeech can 
conveniently talk to those without, but i'm quite sure that in Arrows 
that was not so possible.  Karal, for one has no mindspeech but 
Florian talks to him all the time.  And virtually everyone who has 
mindspeech in the tower freely "talks" with those who don't.

.....And another thing- Rolan is grove born, and i think i recall 
Elspeth saying that grove born companions have exceptional 
mindspeech.  

Okay i'll sum it all up....
Why does Talia have difficulty mind-speaking with Rolan when most 
companions and mind-speakers can practically converse with anyone????




-okay hope this isn't some stupid question with an obvious answer 
that i'm missing, but if it is just....be nice???

Actually, there's nothing really important that I'm replying to this time, 
just little bits and pieces of things. So....

Boy, do I ever!! I could really use a vehicle that drives itself! I'm going 
on 18 and I still don't have a driver's license. Not that it makes much 
difference, because both the cars in my family are standard transmission, and 
one of them is really old and breaks down all the time. ::grumbles:: But oh 
well, both the library and the Barnes & Noble store are within bicycle riding 
distance, so I'm still happy. I spent a good part of Saturday at the 
bookstore just sitting in the aisles and looking at all the wonderful books I 
wish I could buy. It's so nice to go to a bookstore without my family so I 
can spend as much time there as I want! (Well, not really as much time as I 
want, because that would be the rest of my life, but still...) Oops, I'm

Do fantasy authors really feel like that?? I thought the whole point of 
writing was to be able to share your world and characters with others. If you 
don't want anyone to be "intruding" on the world you created, why even 
publish what you wrote in the first place?
Personally, I'd be happy if people wanted to role play in my world! I think 
it would be interesting to create a game based on it, as long as I could 
moniter it fairly closely. And to have other people from my world to interact 
with..! Sigh.. It would be a dream come true.

I have! I have the Song of the Lioness quartet, and I've read all of her Wild

I always got the impression that people can go to the Havens for a while to

I don't know exactly who can get into the Havens. It could be for every

Now a question: Is Shallan from BtS supposed to be the daughter of Jodi from 
OBreakers? They both had ice-blond hair, and both were supposed to look 
fragile.  Plus, Shallan does tell Kero "my mama was a Sunhawk". Just 
wondering how many other people had noticed this. (Probably a lot, if *I* 
actually noticed!)

Oh, and I was wondering.. what ever happened to the Elspeth defense group? I 
wanted to join, but I haven't heard anything about it in ages now.

         I think that you have to be gifted to hear mindspeech as well as to 
speak it.
 Karal could hear mindspeech from Florian, but he couldn't speak it back to 
him, even when Florian was "inside" Karal's mind.  I would assume that being 
gifted to hear mindspeech is a fairly common gift since most people can hear 
it.  Maybe Talia couldn't hear mindspeech because of her overwhelming and 
unusual gift to be able to  feel emotions as an empath.  Most of the empaths 
that I've read about in Misty's books had empathy as their only gift, and 
weren't gifted with anything else.  It makes sense because empathy is so 
powerful.  Don't wanna put too much of a burden on poor Talia, after all.  It 
would be interesting to think of a Tayledras in Talia's position, not being 
able to speak to his/her bondbird.  This is only my humble opinion.  Anyone 
is welcome to correct me.  

    Here's an obmisty: If you lived in Velgarth and you were able to choose 
the gifts and the amounts of them (being reasonable) that you would have, 
what would you choose?
    
     I think empathy, while being a bit of a burden, would be a great and 
interesting gift to have. Or I also would like to have strong long distance 
mindspeech, like Kyril.  Or maybe Farseeing with a touch of foresight.  
Strong foresight could be a real burden.  Does anyone remember what Selenay's 
gift was?  Sorry for carrying on so long.  Thanks for listening, listsibs.

Oh my...with so many it is hard to choose just one or two.
I would definatly want a large amount of the Bardic gift... which reminds
me, I think the Bardic Gift is a type of Projective empathy.  When a Bard
with the 'gift' sings, doesn't he/she make the audience live the song and
experince the emotions that the song conveys... sounds like telempathic
projection if you ask me. =>  But I would also like enough of foresight
and/or mindspeech to get 'Chosen'.  Or maybe some totally unheard of gift,
like sound manipulation.... could be handy if you were a bard.
Well that's enough on that subject from me.

Folks, I am overjoyed beyond words. For the past, oh, ten years or so, I
have been hunting for an obscure fantasy book I swiped from my brother and
read one day, and which he then returned to the library. I finally found
it! *Happy Snoopy Dance*

Seriously, folks, I am beyond thrilled here. I've been running searches at
Amazon and Barnes and Noble based on my *very* limited recollection of the
title of this book--I remembered that it had the word Quest (or was it
Queen?), and I thought it might have the word Dragon.

Turns out I was only sort of right--the book is Sword Daughter's Quest
(Dragontales), by Rhondi Vilott, published by Signet 1 in 1984. Now, if
only I had a credit card... well, that's what parents are for, right? I
figure I'm overdue; I've never asked to use my mother's credit card before
and I'm in college.

Just had to share my joy. :)

Oh, I *rolled* at that bit. Chrome Circle was the first book I read that
had Tannim in it, and my respect for him skyrocketed during that scene.
Beautiful, wonderful, hysterical. I simply have to admire anyone with the
presence of mind and the abiding sense of quirky humor to think of such a

Wild Magic series except for the last book. Even if she is pretty much a

I also have read Tamora Pierce, and like her lots. I've only read the Song
of the Lioness Quartet to date, but I do really like those books. Alanna is
a great heroine--imperfect, but plenty spirited.

Huh. You know, I never thought of that before. It's quite possible--though
Jodi did, according to Oathblood, settle down in Valdemar as a horse-talker
to the Ashkevrons, and I'm not sure a child (or more likely grandchild) of
hers would have migrated back south and joined the Skybolts. On the other
hand, she was old enough to have had children before that, so--well.

Oh I think that I would definately choose Fetching first.  I have 
always thought that that would be a fun gift.

She had very weak Foresight.  Remember that she used it during the 
first battle with Ancar.



Anyway,  I am having the worst time getting ahold Owlsight.  I have 
heard that it isn't as good but I guess I am still a loyal fan and I 
feel a little obligated.  Maybe I will like it but Misty's work really 
does seem to be going down hill doesn't it.  I think that she need's 
to try something new,  like I recall someone earlier saying that it 
would be a good idea to do a book or story from the point of view of  
a companion.  I think that this is  a great idea.  I know this might 
be a stupid question (I am kind of known for that)  but is there 
anyway to get that idea to her?  Probably not but it can't hurt to ask 
(unless you get flamed but that isn't too bad).  Anyway I should go 
now.  Well sheep to all and all that stuff. ::A loud BBBAAAAA is heard 
in the backround.  Starshadow's herd of sheep and stirring and begging 
to be cuddled.::
