Well, here's my two cents if anyone wants it: Rainwing wrote: > Here's an obmisty: If you lived in Velgarth and you were able to choose >the gifts and the amounts of them (being reasonable) that you would have, >what would you choose? Weeelllll...I'm not sure. Fetching is pretty cool, seeing as I forget things alot. I'd would also like Mindspeech, with people and animals. I'd love to know what cats and horses think and what my one year old is thinking (all filled with serious mischief, no doubt). That brings up a good question, could someone with Mindspeech be able to communicate with infants and toddlers or would Empathy be a better Gift for that? Ellevaranachai Shay'Nara'Val wrote on th above subject also: >Or maybe some totally unheard of gift, >like sound manipulation.... could be handy if you were a bard. That's a good one...that would be cool...like you could make your voice sound like someone elses? Bards could do it with the songs..maybe change their voice to match the characters. Earthsong asked: Oh, yeah...oh, yeah. *Stormlight nods very seriously* I would love an Elvensteed. First, I like horses, the ones under the hood and the ones in the fields. To be able to have a powerful car that was also a horse...well, I'm sure this isn't coming out how I would like it to sound. I just like cars and I like horses, what else can I say? An elvensteed would be a dream come true. *sigh* Plus, ever since I read about Tannim and his Mach 1, and then saw one in person *sigh*...I saw a blue one yesterday in mint condition and not a lot of chrome..just the way I like them. I want one very bad (complete with the remote starter). Ardath Summerstorm wrote: >Now a question: Is Shallan from BtS supposed to be the daughter of Jodi from >OBreakers? (Probably a lot, if *I* >actually noticed!) *Stormlight waves hand in air* I noticed! I thought for sure Jodi and Shallan were related....maybe Jodi is her mother, or even grandmother, maybe? If I remember correctly, I think there is a long time between OBreakers and BtS. Anyway, for what it's worth, I definitely noticed. With regards to They Might Be Giants...that's the band, right? My mind is now fuzzy from the huge lunch I had....What are the albums called? I'd like to try and find them so I can listen to them...Could someone let me know...thanks much in advance... Starshadow quoted: >" '2000 years ago Egyptians worshipped cats. The >cats never forgot.' "...don't know where I got it Hehehehehehehe! I like that one! Anyway...just wanted to say hello to everyone *Stormlight shrugs, now feeling kind of shy and sheepish (the feeling, not the animal)* Reading the list always cheers me up. Did y'all know in the world of sci-fi...Monday, April 12th in 1981 was the date of the first space shuttle launch? Speaking of..could you imagine elves in space? They'd probably pop all the popcorn first, of course...but it would be interesting to see a story with them in space, wouldn't it? Enough...I'm starting to ramble.... To: Mercedes Lackey Mailing List Subject: Duty, Honor, and Copyrights Message-ID: <19990414210426.8190.qmail-+AT+-www0n.netaddress.usa.net> Heyla all! *Liss sneezes three times in a row and then starts to talk in a very nasal voice* Sorry if this is a little confused, but I've got a cold/virus that you wouldn't believe. I'm at work on cold medicine and can't hardly concentrate on anything. Has anyone else ever really thought about how duty and honor are such potent forces in _all_ of Misty's books? Not just the Velgarth stories where it's obvious with the Heralds, Tayledras, and Shin'a'in, but others, too. Sacred Ground, the Di Tregarde, Serrated Edge, even the Free Bards. There's no point to this, but it's something that I've been reflecting on a lot lately. *Climbing on her soapbox, while weaving back and forth* I've been reading everyone's e-mails about Orchyd's copyright post. I have to admit that there's been times her (Misty's) attitude has really bothered me. On one hand her worlds are her creations. On the other, fantasy has always seemed a genre that is very open and flexible and her (and her representatives') hardball tactics seem out of place. I don't know if it's still the plan, but for a long time, Misty was MZB's designated successor. I've sometimes wondered what will happen to the freedom of Darkover if that happens. In all fairness, I have to admit that Misty allows fanfic and use of personas, _as long_ as you follow her rules. I've just never been able to take the time to complete the requirements for QO. A lot of it is time consuming and I'm a divorced mother of two. As much as I love Misty's work, it's hard to spare that much time from everything else that needs to be done. This isn't an anti-Misty rant or anything else, just thoughts/opinions. I can understand why she wants to control everything, but it still offends me occasionally. *Liss falls off her soapbox into a pile of fluffy sheep-shaped pillows* I believe that's enough mouthing off for now. I hope I don't have to duck any flaming sheep soon, since my reflexes are a bit off! Zhai'helleva! I don't reply often, but I think I would want to be an empath (if I couldn't be a true bard...hehehe). I'd want to know how people are feelings and what emotions they are dealing with. Of course, being able to "talk" with the animals would be interesting, but I'm afraid it would be a mere disappointment....unlike having a companion. That's my .02 cents. Sosumi. <the gifts and the amounts of them (being reasonable) that you would have, >what would you choose?>> I'd definitely want Mindspeech as well (that's pretty popular around here, huh?) and I think I'd want Empathy too, because I'd love to be able to sense people's emotions and help them deal with whatever inner turmoils they may have. Sounds just like being a shrink which is what I kidn of want to do. << Anyway, I am having the worst time getting ahold Owlsight. I have heard that it isn't as good but I guess I am still a loyal fan and I feel a little obligated. >> Well, my library just got a copy, so I read it, and contrary to popular opinion, I LIKED it. I liked it better than Owlflight, as a matter of fact. Ok, I'll admit that it isn't nearly as good as the Last Herald-Mage, or Arrows of the Queen, etc., but it's still an interestign book and, in my humble opinion, worth reading.....hmm... Slight spoiler For one thing, I liked Keisha. She was an interesting, multi-faceted character, and I really enjoyed all the in-depth details about the Healer's art. Misty never went too deeply into what they did, and I was always wondering...anyway, I liked learning about the herbs and poultices and all that good stuff. And I think Darian changed for the better. He grew up, and he's less one-sided than he was in Owlflight, which I liked. *shrug* I enjoyed it, even if it is somewhat of a let-down from her previous works. I think that's the problem- we're all so in love with those series that any other book slightly less well-written seems just plain bad in comparison, when really they aren't. Anyway, I shall stop babbling. end spoiler By the way, I detected a small thread of discussion abotu my lady Tamora Pierce. She's the first fantasy author I got into- have read Song fo the Lioness, the Immortals, and 3 of the 4 Circle of Magic books, and DAMMIT, the 4th one is out and there are already two "reserved" holds on it before me!! Arghh!!!! C'est tout. That bugs me too! One of the books said that Grove-born companions have unusually strong abilities at mindspeech, ie they can Mindspeak anyone they want to. Including the unGifted. So why, oh why doesn't Rolan just use his Special Abilities to talk to Talia? After all, everyone knows he's Grove-born, not like Gwena who kept it a secret. Sometimes a book says something about Talia going into "deep trance" to get a clearer idea of what Rolan's on about - is that jsut really clear empathic "pictures" of actual Mindspeech? Rainwing again: Does anyone remember what Selenay's >gift was? I think she had Mindspeech, enough to talk to Caryo anyway, but also a small amout of Foresight which manifests itself in knowing the exactly right moment to deploy her troops on a battlefield. By the way IIRC the very strict rules started after some troubles Marrion Zimmer Bradley had because of some fanfic which was too close to a story MZB was writing. It ended up with the fan accusing MZB of stealing the story, and as far as I remember hearing MZB has disallowed fanfics also. Orckyd wrote, >I attempted just recently to start a discussion list much like this one in the States. Well, if you just wanted a discussion list, there should be no problems, but you would have to keep all roleplaying and fanfics out of the list, otherwise..... Carrach wrote: >These people represent Ms. Lackey. They are insulting. Well, I dislike the tone of the letter, and because of such letters get more and more anoyed at Misty, but I still like most of her work, so I suppose I'll keep reading her. By the way, why is your disire to read her work ebbing? Somebody ( sorry no name - bad delete finger, bad ) asked which gift we would like. Well I would defently want the Healing gift, and if I could learn to fetch with myself, then the fetching gift. Just think about it - You can just teleport to the place you want to go. It might not seem so great for many of you, but when you don't have a car - and won't be able to afford one because of the high car prices in Denmark ( there is a 180% tax ( what is the right word? Vat? ) on all cars). Aeon wrote that he would love firestarting because he loves fire. Well then firestarting might NOT be the right gift. It just might go wrong.( *grin* ) Sheepflavored danish to all.
