It was very good. There are references to succubus and incubus and mage wizards. It was a good book. I like = Misty's work, along with several others, but until I meet her and get to = know her, I won't know if I like her as a person. Even if I didn't = really agree with her personality, I would still buy her stuff. She is a = good writer, and Larry is a good artist. As with music, I like the = music, not the band members, and just becuase one song is good, it = doesn't mean the rest are, too. I like most of the music by Metallica, = however I couldn't tell you the name of any of the band members. = Guns-N-Roses put out some decent stuff, yet Axl Rose (you can't not = remember that name) is not my idea of tall, dark, and handsome. I like = Janis Joplin (speaking of, I'd like to punish my local grocery store for = an act of complete blasphemy...Me and Bobby McGee....Elevator style!!!! = Arrgh!!!! Sacrilege! Blaspheme!), but I completely do not agree with the = amount of boozing and doping that she did, and certainly would not have = hung around her if I knew her. The one person who never gave me = strange looks was an old roommate in Japan who was a non-practicing = white-magic witch. Nothing, I mean nothing shocked that girl. (Just = like the real thing, only smaller...I miss ya, Deb) =20 This might be a spoiler if you haven't read The Mage Winds yet... Does anyone else, or is it me (and forgive me if this subject has been = beat to death), have the sneaky suspicion that Yfandes should have been = Grove-Born...okay, okay!! Hear me out! She did choose Vanyel, would = become the most powerful Herald-Mage at the time, and all the Heralds = know that she has not Chosen in ten years. Gwena and I'm assuming the = rest of the companions played with the minds of the Heralds when she = Chose Elspeth. They all thought she was one that had not Chosen in a = while and was very shy and kept to herself in the back of Companions = Field. Plus, Yfandes does stick with Van after he dies, only to show up = to Elspeth, Darkwind and company years later. Yeah, I know about the = Forrest of Sorrows, but the reputation came about after Van and Yfandes = deaths...right? It seems that only a Grove-Born Companion would be able = to sustain that kind of power and ability, because even with her ghost = being tied to the Forrest due to her death, she would still need alot of = power to help Van out during all that time...does anyone understand or = have I finally gone off the deep end (not that it was very far away!)=20 Okay, I've been rambling for sometime now...sorry to all for my = completely incoherent train of thought, but sometimes, my fingers won't = stop...Sorry to take all y'all's time....Wind to thy Wings and red, = white and blue striped sheep-shaped flags with yellow ribbons as collars = to all.. For instance, remember when Van confronted Gwena and mentioned that grove-born companions in particular have some shortsights because they don't have any human experience? (okay, that REALLY didn't go with that, but oh well). I think that Yfandes knew because Van had been having those foresight dreams, and she probably picked it up at least a little before she chose him. My e-mail system has been going psycho on me. I've had mail sent to the wrong addresses, not sent at all, and some that's been unreadable. I sent out _many_ 'mails before I found this out, some of them important and unreplaceable. I just found out that my private e-mail to Dragonfire will probably be going out to everyone. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I did change the address, honest! On a more Misty subject... I'm in the process of re-reading Mage Storms. It's the only series, besides Owl, that I haven't re-read yet. I've been kind of down on the newer books lately, because they haven't seemed as good. Taking a second look though, I realized that while the plots may not be as good as before, some of the characters can still really grab me. Karal and Andesha especially right now. I'm just finding that as I pay more attention, I'm picking up a lot more from these books the second time through. Someone was wondering if Yfandes could have been a grove-born companion and hid it like Gwena did. I haven't actually seen any hints of that, but it started me wondering about something else. Heralds are re-born and Companions and Companions are re-born as Heralds. Can you possibly become more powerful the more times that you are re-born? It's just something to think about. Anyways, that should be enough rambling from me to last all of you a month! Sorry for the incoherency. I've worked 12 days straight, with a lot of 12 hour days. I'm really not here mentally. And have told the other Companions? I always got the impression that Yfandes was not saying that she knew exactly what would happen, but rather that she knew that, in the end, she and Vanyel would die together, alone. Perhaps, she read that from his prescient dreams? If so, then the other Companions would not necessarily know the fates of their Chosen, unless their Chosen already knew. For that matter, maybe she was just putting two and two together and figured that Vanyel was the sort of person who would inevitably end up dying tragically, and she would go with him. After all, when she chose him, it was pretty clear that he was not a good bet for a long, comfortable, happy life: he was pretty much wandering around looking for his own death in the middle of a storm. Okay. The short answer: No, I don't think 'Fandes was Grove-born. Wait! Before you start flaming me, read the long answer. Vanyel needed to be Chosen. He needed to be Chosen immediately. The impression I got from when Gwena appeared in the Grove makes me believe it is not the simplest matter to "make" a Grove-born Companion. Talia, who could always touch Rolan, found him distant at that time. Also, the Companions had been wondering what to do about Elspeth for quite some time. If Vanyel's need to be Chosen had been predicted, it would have been possible to stop Tylendel, and basically all of LHM would never have happened. So Vanyel would not have been Chosen. Also, Vanyel did not need anything "special" from a Companion. The Monarch's Own needs a Companion that continues past the one Herald for the experience. Elspeth needed a Companion that would have sway with the others as well as one that was a more powerful Guardian Spirit, considering what was in store for her. Vanyel needed someone to be, well, a companion. Someone who wouldn't leave. That was all he needed, as well as sheilds. He was probably projecting his loneliness all over the place before he was Chosen. How did Yfandes know what her Choice would lead to? The one possibility that has been mentioned is that she picked up his nightmares. Another is she had a trace of Foresight herself. Perhaps what is being measured when a Companion Chooses is how the Chosen will die. I, personally, think that 'Fandes is intelligent enough to realize that anyone with as much pure, raw Gift as Van has is _not_ going to live to a ripe old age, considering half the Heralds don't live to see retirement anyways. And if by Choosing him 'Fandes promised to be there, she would obviously be there when he died. How did she remain in Sorrows with Vanyel? Someone (thing?) gave Vanyel a choice after he died. Yfandes obviously got the choice as well. Since this being had the power to tie them to Sorrows, it seems reasonable that they would be given any powers necessary to stay there. I really don't think being Grove-born would help a Companion stay wherever it wanted to after it died. Basically, I think my arguement boils down to she didn't need to be Grove-born, so why should she be? I'll go back under my table now.... Actually, Yfandes was DEFINATLY not Grove-Born (IMHO) because she had a few foals running around somewheres from BEFORE she Chose. And from what evidance we've been given (unless there's something in LHM - I don't have those ones yet) it seems that GB Companions appear right before they're about to Choose. At least Gwena did ... not too sure about Rolan because he was around WAY before Talia was even thought of. ;P On What Gifts Would One Choose: Well, that's hard. The Gifts I would choose for myself would be mindspeach, Fetching ("Oh dahling, you look simply GORGOUS!"), and possibly Farseeing. MAYBE a touch of Mage-gift - I know I'd HATE to be an adept.
