I think so. If you remember, when they were talking to Talia about lifebonds (I think it was somewhere in AFall), Sherill mentioned that she had always looked at the Keren and Ylsa with longing, so it seems that they were all lifebonded. Keren also mentioned that her and Ylsa had both "wondered" about Sherrill but had never really done anything about it. And I think that it actually comes out and mentions that, had Ylsa lived, they would probably have formed one the those extremely rare threesomes. On a more general level, since lifebonding is a soulbonding of the perfect match for your soul, I would think that both members of a two-member lifebond would probably be similar, so if another one with a similar soul came along and lifebonded to one of them, it would probably stand to reason that they would lifebond to the other person too, since they all would share similar souls (or something like that!) Anyway, I'll stop babbling and confusing you for now. Do you ever have one of those days/months where one minute you think the world's wonderful, and the next minute it's horrible? That's what I'm suffering right now. Normally I'm not like this, but considering that there's a war going on in Serbia . . . Well, I think I'll try to lighten the mood. I was listening to the radio (I usually do when I'm doing my homework) and I heard that NASA will be sending a time capsule into space comprised of messages. I believe the limit is four pages, and you could write about anything you want. In five thousand years people will be reading it. I wrote down the webpage, but I'm not sure I got it right, so if anybody else has any information on this, I'd be grateful. Just thought you people would be curious. We got a new computer! Hurray! I'll be able to access the INTERNET at home!!!!!!!! It's gonna be a sweet computer too. I believe that it has a 2gig hardrive . . . Hopefully my Dad will be able to set it up this week or on the weekend. I'm so happy about that! This may be a personal record - Yay! Break out the mocha! Y'know, I hate to bring up a well-trod issue once again, but I have a legitimate question this time. After making that statement in defense of the release form, I wanted to go back and check to make sure nothing had changed. As far as I know, nothing has - but as I was reading back through it again, I noticed that there was nothing in it to indicate *where* a story could or could not be published, once approved. I used to think that a story with an approved release form could only be published in a QO 'zine, but I guess that's just a function of the Herald requirements. Anyway, something about this didn't jive right, since every time I've looked up ML-related web pages, I've noticed plenty of promos, summaries of her works, artwork, etc., etc. ...but a conspicuous lack of fanfic, even on the sites of those who have (or claim to have) registered personas. When I tried to look at pages whose summaries seemed to hint at containing archived fanfic or organized stories, these pages were absent or 'forbidden' - probably coincidence, but a little strange, nonetheless. Is it just me, or is this kinda weird? I'd assume that those people in QO with web pages chose not to write a story for their requirements, or for some personal reason, they chose not to publish these stories on their home pages, but judging by the number of people I've heard complaining about the ML fanfic situation, it would seem that *somebody* wanted to write and have their work seen. Still, after browsing through two entire webrings of pages and not finding a single piece of fanfic, I've got to figure that I've missed something along the way. Is there some unwritten (or written) rule that approved fanfic stories cannot be published online, or is this just a case of precedent? ...Okay, obMisty - obMisty.... Someone (I think it was Dax) long ago brought up the question of what the Dreaming was, I always saw it as an extreme retreat from reality, into an internal world, that was naturally accompanied by a total loss of interest in surroundings and circumstances. As both drug abuse and some psychological problems can induce a similar effect for people in RL, I always guessed that was the basis for the concept. It seems that Misty's elves, being almost immortal, incapable of creativity, and operating on a somewhat different time-scale when moving back and forth from Underhill to Earth, would face a lot of stress in the form of mankind's preoccupation with change, and might easily succumb to living in a false and unchanging world of their own memories. In this way, they reminded me a lot of Anne Rice's vampires - unable to change, unable to adapt, and therefore frightened and confused by the changes in the world around them. Seems to be a occupational hazard of being immortal, eh? My question related to the Dreaming had to do more with their stance on caffeine use. There were several instances throughout the _SERRAted Edge_ books and the _Bedlam's Bard_ of people disapproving of its use (for pretty obvious reasons), but I always wondered whether in their culture it was considered more of a (forgive me) 'recreational' drug - i.e. potentially damaging, but more or less acceptable and manageable in small amounts - or if its use was always life-destroying. I believe Misty consistently portrayed it as life-destroying, but it's been years since I read those books. Really? If so, I completely missed that implication. I'm gonna have to ask for textevd on this one. She was mature, and had foaled at least once, but I don't recall there ever being any mention of her having had a previous Chosen. Recall, in Magic's Pawn, when Savil berates Vanyel for trying to kill himself by telling him that Yfandes would die, too. If she had survived the death of one Chosen, why would that kill her? I don't recall ever seeing that in any of the books. And I know it was remarked in MPawn that Yfandes had never chosen and was the oldest unbonded Companion. In fact, it may have been exactly the fact that she was so much older and had had more than one foal that made her such a good Companion for Vanyel. Vanyel was seriously at sea, mentally and emotionally; he didn't need a young, inexperienced Companion (and no arguments that all reincarnated Companions are experienced; maybe they're more experienced than their Chosen, but we've seen young Companions who acted like people of the equivalent age), he needed someone mature and maternal to support him. applies to the recent discussion: Some friends & I want to create role playing game set in Valdemar, and use characters from the books. Is this ok? 4/14/99 Here are the official guidelines on GAMING! We cannot permit ANY use of our characters or settings in online gaming; it doesn't matter if it's non-profit. The point here is that electronic rights (that includes online use) are very new; we don't know what we need to protect and what we don't in order to keep the market-value of those rights. And yes, I know, Robert Jordan and others allow it---my agent personally believes that is very foolish, and he will not allow any electronic use without licensing. No MUCKS, MUDS, MUSHES, or online RPGs. Paper-games. IF you are just running a game among your friends, enjoy yourself! If, however, you are planning to PUBLISH anything, be it an RPG, a game module, an article for a gaming magazine, or self-publishing a set of rules to sell---you're in trouble. That's copyright infringement, and it's not allowed. So have fun at home, with our blessing, but don't take it out the door! The only exception to that rule is, I believe, the Monarch's Own Companion i.e. Rolan survived his Chosen's death (sorry, don't have the book here and can't remember his name!) and went very far afield and Chose Talia afterwards. I believe that if she hadn't survived the drowning in AoQ, he'd have gone and Chosen again. That particular Companion only dies of old age or other means, not from the loss of his/her Chosen. I think it has to do with continuity, because the Monarch's Own is such an important position. If I'm totally wrong, please let me know! Just because she had given birth has nothing to do with her being chosen. Personally the reason I think the reason she had never chosen before Vanyel because she was probably waiting for a herald mage, and since they were all being systematically eliminated there was no one for her to choose until his pathways were blown open. Well that's all I have to say. -Derrick ----Original Message Follows---- On Tue, 20 Apr 1999, Tanya Evans wrote: > Well then the next question is... First off, Mindhearing and Thoughtsensing are the same thing. They're just different names for the abilty to "hear" or read other's thoughts. Second, Mindspeech seems to be made up of two Gifts. Mindhearing/Thoughtsensing which lets you recieve thoughts and the one that lets you broadcast and/or send thoughts (can't remember the name off hand). If you have both, you have the Gift of Mindspeech. That's the impression I got from MPawn anyway. It was in the part where Van's Gifts were listed. Oh, and yes, if you're a strong enough Mindspeaker you can 'overhear' other Mindspoken conversations. > I'll feel really dumb if I'm wrong (i already >do)but I thought it was Zhai'helleva?
