Well, I'm not a councilor.... But I won't flame you. In fact, I'm sending this to the list instead of "You" because there may be others who could benefit. > :>>> >> >>>> If you receive an e-mail titled [deleted] > :>>> >> >>>> DO NOT open it. This is a new, very > :>>> >> malicious > :>>> >> >>>> virus [...] The antecedent of the pronoun "This" is the key here. Yes, "This" is a very malicious virus, but the virus in question is the letter that you just forwarded, not some fictitious "Good Times" clone. It's a human mind virus, not a computer virus -- you were infected, and passed it on. Please read the Good Times Virus Hoax FAQ at . The simple act of reading e-mail CANNOT infect your computer with a virus. In order for your computer to be infected, you have to run a program. Reading e-mail does not cause programs to be run, except for your e-mail reading program itself. (However, if the message contains an attached program, and you choose to run the attachment, then you're taking a risk.) I can explain this in as much detail as you like -- I'm a professional computer programmer and Unix systems administrator. Mail me privately if you have questions. * * * * * Wow, I guess I need a good ObMisty after that. Let's see.... Comparing Owlflight and Owlsight.... I agree with those who said that Owlsight (the second book in this series) is better than Owlflight (the first). I liked 'sight a much more than 'flight -- so, if you were put off by 'flight, then you might find 'sight to be a dramatic improvement. Darian (the protagonist from 'flight) is in 'sight, but he's only a secondary character; and when he does appear, it's as a mature young man instead of a bothered (and bothersome) adolescent. Others have taken offense at the word "juvenile" and said that the Owl series isn't juvenile. Well, "juvenile" has a couple different meanings. When applied to literature, it refers to a sub-genre (or meta-genre) which adheres to certain rules -- the protagonist must be a minor; there must not be any explicit sexual content; etc. Such books are marketed for young adults. Simply because a book is "juvenile", that doesn't mean it's not worth reading, even for adults. Heinlein wrote some excellent juvenile SF novels, for example. And the Owl series is certainly juvenile. -- Greg Wooledge | Distributed.NET http://www.distributed.net/ wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com | because a CPU is a terrible thing to waste. http://www.kellnet.com/wooledge/ | ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 13:24:28 -0500 From: Tim & Tiffanie To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: No-Mail or Digest? Thanks! > > Chantal/Aerden > Your friendly neighborhood councilor here: Start to write a mail message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk. If you are not on AOL, and know that your mail client does not try to do clever things to blank Subject lines, leave the subject line of the mail blank. If you are on AOL, or aren't sure about your mail client, the Subject line should be "Chocolate Cake". Turn off MIME encoding. (This will probably apply to people using Outlook Express or similar Microsoft-isms.) If you managed to subscribe to the list in the first place, you must already have done this at least once ;) In the body of the mail message, write one of the following: set mercedes-lackey mail digest set mercedes-lackey mail noack set mercedes-lackey mail postpone depending which setting you want. "Digest" gives you collected batches of mail messages. "Noack" gives you individual messages, but never sends your own posts back to you. "Postpone" does not send you any mail at all. If you don't actually want to be on the list at all, then please write the following instead: unsubscribe mercedes-lackey Do not leave the word "mail" out of the line in your mail message if you are using one of the first three messages. Do not misspell "unsubscribe" if you are using the last option. "unsub" is also okay. Now send the mail. You should get an acknowledgement back reasonably shortly (minutes to hours, depending on many things including the speed of the net, phase of the moon...) telling you that your settings have been reset. If you get a message back saying something along the lines of "Unrecognized command THIS", then please go back to the section above that mentions MIME encoding, and remember to do that this time. If you get a message saying "You are not subscribed to the list" (or words to that effect) then forward that message to lackey-owner-+AT+-herald.co.uk, and tell me what you would like your setting to be. If you don't get a message back at all after, let us say, 24 hours, something is broken; mail to lackey-owner-+AT+-herald.co.uk. --- end instructions --- Hope that helps! I have mail backed up here for Hotmail accounts dated back to Friday right now (it's now Monday); it doesn't seem to be all accounts that are affected but I don't have any easy way of telling which. Just another public service announcement. But anyway, sooner or later they find out she was put there by Falconsbane. Alright, that's all good and nice, but there is a part when the male gryphon friend of Darkwind (gee's he's name seemed to have slipped my mind also. What a slippery mind I have, but he and his mate was a friend of Darkwinds:) gives Nyara this hard stare and she immediately falls asleep. I think it happens in the gryphons home. What I was wanted to know was what kind of magic was that and what's it called? Is it just a sort of magic gryphons have or is it just rare? Or is it the Mage Gift? If that was so can other human mages perform the same magic? Well you must remember that both of the Gryphons were what humans would call master level mages, and both teachers (they tought Darkwind and Elspeth during the Mage Winds, and a host of others during the Mage Storms) My guess is that its a sleep spell, probobly rather basic and similar to the one Falconsbane cast at the end of the Winds Trilogy to get out of Anicars Castle.
