Well, "juvenile" has a couple different meanings. >When applied to literature, it refers to a sub-genre (or meta-genre) >which adheres to certain rules -- the protagonist must be a minor; >there must not be any explicit sexual content; etc. Such books are >marketed for young adults. Simply because a book is "juvenile", that >doesn't mean it's not worth reading, even for adults. Heinlein wrote >some excellent juvenile SF novels, for example. And the Owl series is >certainly juvenile. Hmm. That's a good point to remember. I guess since everyone is used to Misty's adult books (myself included)so that this came as a surprise. But I still don't like the series. Someone asked what country you would live in if you were in Velgarth. I would either live in Rethwellan or the country K'Leshya came from (it's been a while since I read anything be her). Now I have a question. What would you BE if you were in Velgarth? I would be either a Bard or a White Winds Sorceress. To: Mercedes Lackey Mailing List Subject: Who knows? Message-ID: <19990426172910.9128.qmail-+AT+-nwcst021.netaddress.usa.net> Heyla all! There's been a lot of questions out there about books coming out, etc. For those of you who may actually not be on the Firebird mailing list, I thought this might be interesting. The Ask Misty feature is at >the top of the Mercedes Lackey index. *The address is firebird-+AT+-firebirdarts.com* I've finished reading the Mage Storms books (again!) and started on the LHM. **Yeah, I know, I've already read it 14 million times!** In Magic's Pawn, Moonwind talks to Vanyel about how the way he feels cannot be unnatural, other animals besides humans have same sex pairings. I brought this to the attention of a friend of mine that was recently beaten badly because of her orientation and it really helped her deal with things. She's now reading the series and she _never_ reads fantasy. No point to this, I guess it's just kind of neat how things in books can sometimes help out in real life. Lady knows, that whole series has helped a lot of confused people. Zhai'helleva! Message-ID: <19990426175808.3355.qmail-+AT+-www0j.netaddress.usa.net> Heyla again all! Thought of a few more things, so of course I've got to stick my nose in. On a non-Misty, someone *no, I don't remember who* was asking about Sword and Sorceress. #16 is expected to be out in June 1999 (U.S., obviously). There's more info at: http://www.mzbfm.com. Another someone *gee, there's a lot of people named that on this list!* asked _where_ in Velgarth we would like to be. Honestly, I'd like to be down around Ceejay. I'd like to see how the mind magic there is used differently than in Valdemar. It's always being referred to as the only other place that uses mind magic in such a major way. As for _who_ I would want to be, that's a really hard question. Better to ask who I _wouldn't_ want to be. There's a lot less on that list. My persona *if I ever get around to finishing it* in QO is a Herald with double mind-magic. Speaking of Queen's Own, I have to say that if you join and/or have a problem, Robin's great (she's the Seneschal). She's been just fantastic in helping me out with some dumb problems that I created for myself. Anyways, enough of my rambling (for now, at least!). Zhai'helleva! It seems like everytime I get on, the same topics are being thrashed out. Of course, newbies always do that (I did too, so don't think I'm being rude) but we need something new and interesting. About Owlflight: I thought it was rather juvenile, in a few ways. Firstly, the way the Hawkbrothers treat Darian. When he's just had his traumatic experience and Snowfire is distracting him, he makes the most basic inferences and Snowfire gets all excited over his intelligence. And I thought the conversation was rather banal. His thirteen, not five! But I've mostly been around adults, outside of school, and most of the kids I grew up with didn't act so much like children in that way. Anyone who learns to read at such a young age inevitably matures faster mentally, so maybe that is the way the average thirteen year old behaves. I wouldn't know. I remember Brightly Burning, but I haven't heard anything about it coming out, or even if she's got it planned for a later date. I'm am extremely happy to kow that Black Swan is out! Hurrah! Gryphonstorm gave the Ring back to me? How'd that happen? If anyone feels like going through the archives, they'd better look that up, me being gone since January and all. If nothing comes up to the contrary, I'll ceremoniously pass it on after I figure out who is new, and how new they are and all that kind of thing. Hey Hawkfire! ~SPLOOSH!!~ Hehehe. As I said previously, I dump buckets of fresh water, so don't worry about getting clothes all crusty. there are also tenderhearted people wandering around with towels, should you need one. ::Giggling maniacally, Rhiannon strides away.:: It might interest you people to know that I made a reckless bet and now have to dye my hair purple. As I've been telling people, it was a win-win situation. Either I get to see my serious teacher with purple hair, or I get to have it myself. Now to do it without having my parents find out until it's too late... I know, I'm so naughty. I don't think Eldan did explain thoughtsensing to Kero. As I recall, she was highly confused but the whole thing. I think the explanation is when Ylsa is teaching the gifts class with Elcarth. I have heard mention of an Andre novel, but only on the list. If it's true, it's probably one of those tings that she wants to do, but has too many projects at the moment, or something. Goodness knows we've heard enough about upcoming books. About magic in gryphons: In the mage war books, jI think somebody said that all gryphons were mages of some degree, having been created that way, and requiring magic to fuel their mating. It was echoes in the Winds, and I know that Treyvan called himself a Master, implying that he had the mage gift. I think that all gryphons have a bit of earth magic, and some have the gift in varying proportions, like other races do. like the Storm books, and they were best written techinically. They didn't have the emotion that Last Hearld Mage, and Queen's Own did. It's like Julius Ceaser and Romeo and Juliet... Caesar is better written, but you don't feel nearly as much as you do with R&J. Forgive me, but I had to do Caesar for UIL, and it's made me think way too much than can be good for my brain. Hmm. I think that covers all my Misty mail. Which is good because this is really long. But better one long post than seventeen or so short ones, right? For everyone who was patient enough to read my incoherencies, dark chocolate sheep with minty centers! And hugs from all who welcomed me back to this my happy home. You're so smart, Herald Songrunner! By the way, how are things going on the peanut farm? hee! hee! I think Companions definitely know who their Chosen is going to be. Companions are very mysterious and I believe they have some "gifts" that we don't really know all that much about. All I can say is they probaly use some sort of far off thought sensing ability to form their bond and then eventually home in on the person when they feel it is the proper time to do so. About the Companions "fighting" over who would get to choose the royal twins... I think those Companions may have eaten a batch of wild mushrooms or something. Anyway "Heyla" to all the glorious list-sibs of honor and truth that are out there in the cyber-realm! (including Songrunner) I have another question of which I'm sure has been asked before but was wondering if anyone could refresh me with a most generous and courteous reply. I would be most gracious. Misty often refers to the term "candlemark" in some of her books and I was curious as to what this would equal in a measure of our time. If that was so can other human mages perform the same magic?<< I don't think it was rare; if I recall right Keth did it in Oathbreakers, after that first campaign with Sursha. She had used up most of her energies, and had just enough left to put people to sleep with her magics. Maybe the gryphons just perfected the art of being able to do it with a look.
