This is probably very simplistic, but my experience with goths or pseudo-goths is that much of what they do seems to be calculated for effect. The ones that I've talked to seemed to almost revel in being "misunderstood" and "persecuted." While I suppose there are some goths who simply choose to dress as they do because black is a practical, easy to care for, easy to coordinate color (okay, I'll admit it's not likely, but if it was good enough for Granny Weatherwax!...*grin*), I also think that most goths do seem to cultivate their outsider status. Essentially, there seems to be a sort of covert prestige in being a member of a persecuted group and being a misfit. So, I suppose, wearing clothes that are guarenteed to increase their "misfitness" is understandable. After all, to some extent, that's what many goths have been doing all along. This is not to dismiss the Goth subculture as being entirely composed of fashion conscious poseur. However, based on what I have seen of it, there is a good portion of what I guess might be called "pseudo-goths" who do seem to be more about image than anything else. And quite frankly they are more concerned about their appearance and their style than the most dedicated pageant person or style queen. =) It's just a different style, that's all. Ob misty: Hmmm. Well, I guess the most obvious Misty link to this is the DT books. And, come to think of it, the real occult types in those books don't dress at all like goths. This bothers me, and I wish she'd cut it out. (Although if it's a choice between lesbians as relatively undeveloped minor characters or no lesbians at all, I'll take undeveloped lesbians any day.) In her intro to Oathblood, she mentions that most female fantasy lead characters from that time tended to be big Conan types who shared Conan's taste in women, and that she felt like it was time for a hetero heroine. However, those times have passed (unless you count Xena!), and I think it would be nice to have an interesting, significant lesbian character in a book or series of hers. > I think it's great. You certainly got everything started. My comments, unfortuneately, seem to be very similar to others that have been expressed. First, I think she does a fairly good job at portraying homosexuality. I don't know this for certain, though, because I know very few people who are homosexual. A comment on Vanyel and his clothes collection: Okay. So I identified with Van. From the first time I read LHM in early high school. At that time, I had no idea what my sexuality was and that was not the reason I identified with him. I identified with him as outcast, from both family and social, though it was worse for him than it ever was for me. Now I know my sexuality. I'm bi. That doesn't change how I identify with Van. So. Along this same thread. I am currently in college at a place which seems sort of like the Heralds Collegium in many ways. It's filled with intelligent, caring people, some of whom are as idealistic as the Heralds. I know very few people here who claim heterosexuality. Odd, right? Okay, so maybe half the people I know here are hetero. I know about 1 who claims homosexuality. Everyone else is bi, to varying degrees. My question is, in a place as open and loving and, um, promiscuous as the Collegium, why don't _more_ people claim not to be heterosexual? Why is it that every time another homosexual couple comes along the Heralds don't accept it immediately as part of their everyday life? Goth's buying them is not a new thing and most the goths I know have stopped wearing their trenchcoats, dusters, or long jackets since the killings so they don't get accused of anything. Second the current run on such items is not by goths, but by wannabe goths and gangsters who think wearing a trenchcoat will make them look tough and becuase the MEDIA has been playing it up so much. Once again someone has heard a mis-told piece of information and goes straight to blaming people not responsible. I know I do not nor can I speak for all goths or like minded people out there, goths are trying to seperate themselves from these people in every way possible and it is those wannabe teanie boppers who now BECAUSE OF THE MEDIA think it is cool and rebelious to buy black dusters to be rebelious! Van and Ty were wonderful and I was sooo happy at that point in my life to see a positive and somewhat realistic example of homosexuality in literature. THAT is the first thing that perked my interest in our beloved ML. I dont think that the gay community- or any community- can be labeled ... everyone is different.. we can say these people are this way and those people are that way but we are all individuals and if the characters in mistys books are flamboyant then so be it... I can be flamboyant too.. but I also like to slide right into the stereotype and show off my tattoos, wear cut off blue jean shorts and muscle shirts... so I say HOORAY for any and every positive gay/lesbian character in our fantasy genre... Actually, I wear black so often that people often ask me if I'm a Goth (I'm not, at least not intentionally, and I can't stand the music that I see as being associated with Goths) because it is a very simple color to coordinate and it looks good on me. My mom didn't buy me black clothes when I was little, but as soon as I was old enough to pick out my own clothes, I bought black ones, and I never stopped. Recently, I've branched out some into brown and I've always had clothes in blue and purple, but I could go a least a week or two wearing only black before I'd have to do laundry. (I think I own a grand total of 2 pairs of pants that aren't black, one pair is navy and the other is brown. ) So there really are people out there who aren't trying to be Goth, who just like black. Hmmm.....now how to tie this to the list topic........oh I have a question, I remember now. I just got the Heralds, Harpers & Havoc songbook, and I was disappointed by the lack of chord diagrams and picking patterns for guitar. All it had was a vocal line with the names of guitar chords over them, which basically means that I get to go look up the chords, because I'm not that great of a guitar player. Is the Lovers, Lore & Loss songbook like that too? Or does it have more information for guitarists? Heralds, Harpers & Havoc seemed to basically be a vocal book. Of course, I'll go buy the other songbook regardless, but it would be nice to know what it's like. Well, I've wasted enough bandwidth for one day. I think the first would be the comfort that one can obtain from same sex peer group isn't as restrictive as 'polite society' here would be. So less pressure on the situation. Another main reason would be an assumption based reason. If you assume that a lot of the cultural mores that we have in our world work on Valdemar, it would cover a lot. Such as the ideal of 'true love' passed down to us from parent/social/peer groups is that of 2 people, generally considered/expected to be opposite sex. I fall back on the words given to Vanyel when he was in the Vale in MPawn. Paraphrased as: 'That while they happen in nature, same sex pairings alone are not good for the propogation of the species.' So if one goes along the line that we exist for the propogation of our genetics, most of the eventual pairings would be opposite sex, while the same sex relations would be more accepted, but over all percentage wise, also end up being transient.... *climbs off soapbox, sheepishly hands it off, and sends sheep shaped mint truffles to all* Starmane ------------------------------------------ Up here it is better to forget early days It is enough to ache from damp mornings To ache from memories too Is more than a man can bear ------------------------------------------ It's gonna be alright, It's almost midnight, And I've got two more bottles of wine. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 22:10:26 PDT From: "Sorana Stargem" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: TMBG and questions Message-ID: <19990428051028.12258.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla all! Hmmm....I always thought that it was because most of the politicians in Congress are idiots. Especially the Republicans....The Democrats can be pretty bad too though. I usually just end up wanting to smack them _all_ over the head with a nice, thick 2x4 to get some sense into them. Too bad it woudn't work...~sigh~ Although it would be very satisfying to do that to Slade Gorton. I wrote him a very polite letter about a bill or referendum or whatever that was coming up several years ago. My whole family did. My mom and I got a letter back. One for the both of us. I have _never_ been so insulted in my LIFE! (And since I'm only 15 I expect that situation will be fixed at somepoint.) I swear that if he had anything to do about it, those of us who were old enough would be kept barefoot and pregnant; slaves to our Masterful, All Powerful Husbands. And those who weren't would be sat in a corner to look pretty with a vapid smile on our faces and neither way would we be allowed to speak or even think!!!!!!!! And I apologize to any of you who may like Slade Gorton, for any possible offense I may have given. Well, I was going to say something one the subject of Misty's shaych chars, but most of it was said already by other people, and the few things I have thought about adding are probably of no help or interest to anyone, so I'll just shut up now and leave everyone to go about their own business. ~holds her tongue before she can sayanything she might regret.~ Stars light your path, Sorana S. Even being feared is better than being invisible. Most of the trenchcoat-wearing people that I know just wear them to annoy the Campus Police. One of our officers made the mistake of commenting that they could not be seen at night. obmisty I just started the LHM series, and I noticed that Van reminds me of the son that Lancelot tries to rescue in "Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail." Well, ok, Van is far more striking, intelligent, and not pathetic, but other than that they are sort of similar. Am I crazy or do ya'll see it also? I think I would like to be a blue with mindspeech and to end up a priestess with a firecat Bondmate in the reformed Karse. I'm probably going to get flamed over the Van comment so the newbie bucket of water will put out the flames :) Chocolate-covered, Peppermint Cream Sheep to you all, Margaret ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 22:53:42 -0400 From: "Tanya Evans" To: Subject: Re: Queen's Own Message-ID: <000001be9172$870b0c20$23040618-+AT+-baycty1.mi.home.com> Derrik O said: > I don't know I've been wondering on that one myself. I would assume that if the breaking of the link was amicable for both the Companion and the Chosen then there would be very few ill effects for either. 'nuff said. Though I have no evidence to support such a statement, its purely conjecture on my part. I also stand corrected on the 'Fandes thing. Well, I can see your point, but still - did you really have to compare those two. I mean - that son was truly pathetic (sp?), nothing like Van at all. Could you even consider that wimp standing up to his father in any way? Riannon wrote >As far as I know, the candlemarks about equal the Karsite water marks, Thanks, that tells us a lot. Usually people just get off the list, but that guy had to get personal. ::shudders:: Something nice and safe, like the eternal Companion reincarnation debate that comes up with every newbie. Of course, that is getting tiresome. But it's safe and harmless. No blood or broken bones have ever resulted, to my knowledge. Well people asked for something with a bit of a bite in it, and you have to admit there was some bite(s) in that particular debate. someone complained about hotmail (again) well, you are lucky some time ago hotmail lost 35 million accounts, so it could be worse. It is rumored that the hotmail problems this time are because of a change to Linux on the hotmail servers ( bet Bill Gates love that ), so we can hope the troubles are over soon. someone asked about the sheep thing: I think it is in the newbiefest, but anyway: Misty uses a lot of sheep jokes in her books, so someone started using sheepish remarks, and then it went downhill... Just think of it as our particular flavor. that's all for now I suppose sheepflavored danish to everyone Absalon member of OLW and OoUH ( champion of Lissa ) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 10:05:24 -0400 From: Abigail Laughlin To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Test your knowledge . . . I'd be my Queen's Own persona (currently still under development), a farmgirl-cum-Herald with Mindspeech, Animal Mindspeech, and some funky low-level foresight. Complete with satisfactory fighting and woodscraft skills, temper, lack of tact, and somewhat overbearing but well-meaning friends. :) <> This one came up on the Queen's Circle list (the egroups list we set up for people making Queen's Own personas to band together and conversate) more than once. I have a theory; being Tayledras and being a Herald would just be too much coolness for any one person to bear. And if all that coolth didn't kill the person in question, imagine the life they'd lead--you know how it is, the cooler the character, the more hell you have to put 'em through to justify being so generous. Also, before the end of Storms, Tayledras probably couldn't be Chosen because of their commitment to the Star-Eyed... they had purposes already, and becoming Protectors of Valdemar would conflict with that. They're most of them really great people, but their purpose in life does not involve white uniforms and four-hooved Guardian Spirits--not even Darkwind, who left the Pelagirs altogether and shows no intentions of going back. Now, of course, the Tayledras don't have to wander around purifying the Pelagirs, but I personally would be pretty disappointed with Misty if she started getting them Chosen. Unless she handled it really well. Columbine: (skip if you wish) I work for a School District in Utah (DISCLAIMER HERE: I am NOT expressing School District Policy or anything else...just my own opinions and, well, rumors...Please take that into consideration...) Anyway, one of the many dismaying things about the Columbine tragedy is that almost every middle and high school in my District has been threated with the same action -- to me, that means that there are enough sick kids out there to not only see how sad and wrong blowing up your entire school is, but now they would like to do the same to their school. Frightening! And what's with the parents who claim they knew nothing about this -- I would HOPE I would notice a sudden plethora of guns and bombs in MY basement! Speaking of which, did you-all hear that they hauled four kids in and out of court in orange suits and chains for threatening to bomb their school.? As one of my co-workers put it, Good! I'd rather see my kids in chains than killing people! Anyway, rant and rave over. It just baffles me.... Tarma and Kethry: Rae Henderson said: >When I read Oathbound and Oathbreakers I was hoping all the >while for a pairing for Tarma and Kethry... I'd have to disagree with you on that one - I think part of the premise of Tarma and Kethry was that there *could* be a pair of females working together *without* sex (the act of, as well as the gender) being important - especially because Tarma, being sword-sworn, became sexless - essentially a neuter. That was part of why Warrl bonded to *her* instead of Keth....Besides which, where would Kerowyn come from without Keth and her husband (Jarmak? something like that - Ah! *Must reread...*) :) Ellevaranachai Shay'Nara'Val said about Monarch's Own being chosen from the trainees: (and thank heavens for copy and paste for that name! :) ) >Well if you remember Companions can choose to break the connection between >themselves and thier Chosen, Gala repudiated Tylendal, while this is a bad >example, it proves it can be done. I would assume that if the breaking of >the link was amicable for both the Companion and the Chosen then there would >be very few ill effects for either. I think we touched on this a while back with Jisa - Van's daughter - Remember he told her "parents" what her gifts were, and said she could be chosen soon, but it would be an "unbonded choosing" so she could get the training, asuming that Taver would choose her to be Monarch's Own... Wow! Long post! (At least for me.) *Dives back into the sheep pile. A voice echoes, "Sheep truffles to all!"
