I think it would be neat to be a sort of free-lance trader who gets to travel all over the continent selling all kinds of nifty things to people and haggling over prices with them and always getting the better of them. Taver *didn't* choose him, obviously, and probably there was never much of a chance of him doing so; Van had a different purpose and there was someone else who was needed as Monarch's Own. As for the whole concept of Choosing someone who has already been Chosen--Quite frankly, since I doubt we'll ever see it happen, I don't worry much about it. In point of fact I tend to overlook it. No need in getting more brainfry complicated than necessary. <> The dyheli are not white. There was one white one, Firesong's pal Brytha, who was white because he used node-magic, but nowhever does it say that all dyheli are white. I doubt Companions have other-colored markings--they are White, and only White, as has been made abundantly clear. However, I put forth again my question as to the skin color of Companions--black or pink? A truly white horse must have pink skin, but when they have pink skin their hooves are pinkish-white as well, as Companions' are not. A horse with a white coat and black skin isn't white, but rather grey. That's the way it is. (Yes, I *know* Companions aren't horses, but they follow a lot of the same rules.) So which is it? Black skin or pink? I tend to think black, because pink-skinned white horses tend to be kind of ugly. The pink shows through the coat and makes them look pinkish too. Vree, to whoever asked, was a forestgyre. I was the one who said that the ref in AotQ was probably meant to refer to Eldan. I should have clarified; Misty probably didn't have Eldan's character in mind when she made that reference, but I'm fairly sure that when she wrote By The Sword she meant for Eldan and the man mentioned there to be the same person. Eldan's reference to Selenay kinda clinches it. I do find myself wondering about Eldan's position in the Heraldic Circle. He had, as I recall, a hell of a ransom, which was paid without fuss when Kero sent the Guild emissary to get it. And he was sent out as a spy into Karse. But he's not mentioned in Winds at all and only comes up briefly in Storms--and then it's not even in any of the meetings; it's when Elspeth, Darkwind, An'desha, Firesong, Kero and he all take a soak in the spring in Firesong's makeshift ekele. So how important is he? Is he just another Herald--which means that, after his attempts to drag Kero into Valdemar (anyone else notice Ratha's musings about what would happen if Kero *did* go to Valdemar? Hee) she outranks him like anything. Or is he somethign really nifty that just never gets mentioned 'onstage'? And, oh yeah, to whoever wanted to know about fantasy art on the web--Alexia?--a really good place is Elfwood, a fantasy/sci-fi/short-story gallery at www.elfwood.com. It's down currently but will be up again soon. Bounce, bounce bounce... I'm enthused; I just got back from a meeting with Ben Long, very skilled and pretty damn well-known fresco artist. My speech class is holding a debate--Resolved: that drawing the nude human figure from life should be a required component of a visual arts degree in American Christian Colleges. My team is for. We met with Ben today while he was working on the fresco in our new chapel and *wow.* We sat up on the scaffolding and talked the whole time he was painting, touch-ups mostly. It was so amazing. And the last thing he said as we were leaving was 'Remember, you're right.' I am enthused. Yep. The only ones i haven't read that comes before that is the *new* tarma and kethry book, (name has slipped me at the moment). However i think i can answer at least one question, and thats about the brat. To the best of my knowledge, the only "brat" in the entire series is young elspeth. In the arrows of the queen trilogy elspeth is in the first book, "the brat" a spoiled rotten heir apparent being manipulated by the evil nanny hulda. Talia eventually rescues elspeth from this nasty fate and growing up a monster, but not before elspeth's reputation is smeared... :) As for modeling after native american culture, whether it was intentional or not the similarities are there. Not just in the names of taylederas either (although their names are a dead give away). some of the culture ideals, the tight clan families, etc. etc. are very closely related to the native american beliefs. Now, being new to the list i have a question of my own. I've noticed while reading the books that The practice of Magic and the degrees etc. take entirely different meaning and style in the context. for example, in the Vows and Honor Duology Kethry is a White Winds Mage, and her "style" of magic is very ritualistic, very formed and set, and the tests to become master and then adept are oddly out of sinc with the rest of the worlds magery (or the other way around) because kethry becomes very powerful, and she says something to the effect of, "I never have to draw upon personal power again if i don't want to." This doesn't make sense to me because Vanyel many times says that Even though he is an adept, and has acess to node energy, he needs to use his personal power to control/manipulate the power he taps. I wonder if these discrepencies are based upon the theology behind the different mage schools (valdemaran being an intuitive/scientificly structured path, and white winds being an oath driven, and form oriented path), or if its just a differing in the way that the individual mages look at it. Also the degrees that white winds mages go through, how they take their tests to reach master, adept... In one of the books (i don't remember which one) someone says "the difference between master and adept is really just one of power and not skill." also seeing as herald mages don't go through these kinds of tests how do they know when they are adept? when they can tap nodes? but van and savil both say that being able to acess a node is a very rare gift, certainly not all adept herald-mages had that ability, but they were still adepts.. ? ~~EarthSong~~ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 21:44:46 -0500 From: Amy Trujillo To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Black Swan SPOILER ALERT Message-ID: <3727C798.56A8-+AT+-southwind.net> Heyla listsibs, I just finished Black Swan and wanted to give the list a review of it, so this is a ***** S P O I L E R A L E R T ************ Well, honestly I don't think that this is one of Misty's best books. It has its good points but the whole thing just seemed a little shallow. The character development just didn't seem to be there this time. I like Odile but I can't get over this urge to slap her and knock some sense into her head. The same thing can be said for Siegfried...Misty has written some self centered heros before but I almost hated this guy. The plot of the book is good but Misty didn't stray to far from the folktale this time. I liked Firebird more...Ilya's character was more likable than any of the characters in this but Odette and Misty does very little with her character. I liked this story but its not memorable. I just wish that the characters had more demnsions to them...this is the first Misty book where you truly do get a good feel of the characters in the cover blurb. Odile's character makes progress she starts to think for herself and care for the swan ladies but she is entirely too subservient to her father for my tastes. I thought the LHM gave some indication of how herald-mages were taught, but not lots ... and Van himself isn't taught in the Collegium ... and after Van, there was no herald training...so how do we know how herald-mages were taught (I'm probably forgetting something in all this... :-)? I would think that they are tested in some way... > when they can tap nodes? as it's potentially lethal to tap nodes incorrectly, they must have had to be shown how to do this - not necessarily a test... > but van and savil > both say that being able to acess a node is a very rare gift, certainly not > all adept herald-mages had that ability, but they were still adepts.. ? > maybe not - maybe some of them were journeymen. a few thoughts... I still have no answer to the initial question because I don't think she ever really addressed it in any of her books. Actually it was an attempt to reply in a humourous way - sorry it could be misunderstod. It was suggested to me that I might have upset the OAM with my comment. :) I meant the whole thing as a joke. I took it that way, and laughed at "bite your tongue" when I read it. (Sorry!) Message-ID: <01BE925C.9AC4FC40-+AT+-CLARB.clark.net> Heyla all listsibs....Howzit? While everyone else is chiming in, I thought I might add my monies. First of, could someone dump a magic bucket on the Maryland Dept. of Revenue?? They are being REAL weiners!!! Anyway, it's been a few days since I checked my mail...here goes...*Stormlight dons her asbestos firesuit, just in case*.... Well there's alot of messages on this topic, so I won't cut and paste...however, yes the media is doing a job on some innocent musicians and people. I am not a fan of Marilyn Manson or the other bands and truly I don't think they should be held accountable for the tragedy..Those involved ( the boys parental units, for one ..."Oh, those silly bomb plans...it's just a phase!") should be held accountable. The media, IMNSHO, has taken some things way too far. O.J.'s race through Los Angeles only proved to martyr the guy (I am not giving an opinion of his innocence!!!) Rodney King was a habitual offender who was stoned on LSD (or PCP, which one, I'm not sure, ) and drunk when he was beaten. (I do agree that it was wrong for the officers to gang up on him like they did) Did the media mention that? No. Once again, I'm not defending the officers, but I can understand why so many officers go to these things. The media doesn't tell you that a person on PCP can and has jumped through second story glass windows, and that they try to run on broken limbs, and during all of this, they don't feel a damn thing and keep on trucking. In the Olympic bombing, what's his name was prosecuted by the media before anyone else got a hold of him. (Innocent until proven quilty..not in this country) Oh,and my favorite of all, being prior military, all Saddam and Milosevic have to do is tune in to CNN to know the location of our troops and ships. This really irks me...Anyway...the media is horrible and because of this, I can kind of see why Misty is protecting her rights so fiercely. Couldn't you just see it? Some nutcase dressed in white kills his entire family at the summer reunion to re-enact Vanyel's massacre at the village after his rape..."I did it for Misty!!", he (the nutcase) says, then people find out she's a fantasy writer whose books have magic, sex, homosexuality, and, heaven forbid, death and war. While WE (the list and her other sane fans) know what her books are about and are fiction... All hell would still break loose, Then the people go after her. The media would sink their teeth into that one and never let go...at least what she' s doing is a little protection against that kind of stuff....**Stormlight says aloud, for all the OAM to hear "This is in no way intended to insult Vanyel...I love him just like the rest of you...I'm using that scene to get my point across."** Oddly enough, if Misty's world were real, someone with Foresight might have foreseen the tradegy and sent a few Heralds to prevent it. Okay, I'll get off that cuz I'm starting to rant....It's been ten years since I was in high school, and all we had to worry about was whether or not the football team was going to show up drunk/hungover the morning after a football game (They did.) Ahhh. The good ole' days. Liss wrote: >In Magic's Pawn, Moonwind talks to Vanyel about how the way he feels cannot be >unnatural, other animals besides humans have same sex pairings. She's >now reading the series and she _never_ reads fantasy. I sincerely hope your friend is okay. Here's a huge Fluffy Healing Sheep for her. No one and I mean, no one deserves to be beaten for being gay (I use the term in the generic sense)....NO ONE. Please give her a big hug for me. Also, there ARE same sex pairings in nature...There is a type of lizard (I can't recall the name, but it's not a large species) that are ALL female. When they mate, one of the pairing takes on male characteristics, but scientists have not found a thing in the lizards DNA that identifies which one takes the male part and which one doesn't. It's been a while since I heard that on National Geographic, and I know I've left out some details, but I bet it could be found again. Here's another thing...this irks me...when you hear of gay (little g) couples, the partner is always referred to as "lover"...not boyfriend or girlfriend like a partner of a straight couple would be called. Does this bother anyone else? The word "lover" always invokes a kind of illicit, wild stereotype on the person. Why can't they just say "that's her girlfriend, or his boyfriend"!!! Okay, I'm ranting again, and I apologize if I offended anyone... Someone wondered (the stapler deleted the message again...bad, bad stapler) about Firesong's mother and which side Firesong's relation to Vanyel came down....I'd like to meet Firesong's mother, too. She must be an impeccable dresser and a truly stalwart character because she is the only person, to my knowledge, that Firesong is afraid of. I do think, though that Firesong is related paternally to Vanyel. POSIBLE SPOILER FOR OWLSIGHT... Starfall (Firesong's father) mentions that HIS father's hair had gone white at the age of four...That's one sincerely Gifted tyke...Anyway, that's why I think what I said above... Liss also wrote: >FYI - Ask Misty on Firebird says Owlknight will be out October 1999. Thank goodness...I'm dying to read it. Speaking of Misty books, amazon.com lists a book called The River's Gift due out this year. Anyone heard anything? This could be a spoiler *Stormlight breaks out her megaphone* OWLSIGHT SPOILER The Tayledras are still wandering about, to help reassemble the nodes and leylines, I think. Snowfire says something to that effect, when he's telling Darien about why the Tayledras are still out in Valdemar and why they won't see the home Vale for four years. Okay, if you've made it this far....I love you guys!!!! Here, the soapbox can go to someone else, now. I hope I didn't offend anyone......Peanut Butter Sheep to all.... It seems to me that the "test" is whether or not the student's Teacher thinks that he/she has learned all that he/she needs to know. In MP, Savil is working with Tylendel, "She Watched him carefully as he took down the barrier - properly - did so with quite a meticulous attention to the little details, like releasing the barrier-energy back into the same flow he'd taken it from. She nodded approvingly..." (76). But unfortunately this is not so. I suppose some of this could be based on religion (specifically the Christian faith (sorry if anybody finds this offensive, but it that's my aethism part speaking)), and some of this is blamed on our own fear of the unkown. was said by: "Kristy Lyseng" BRAVO!!!
