In honor of the recent posting to the list about the effects of mixing LSD and strychnine and applying it to public phones, I wanted to remind everyone that chain letters, of whatever kind, are strictly forbidden on the Misty List. This means "Do NOT post them, no matter how important you may personally think they are!" If you really feel that a particular chain letter is very important, forward it to a member of the Council and or Mel and we will decide whether it is appropriate or not, and post it. However, as Mel would say, "don't hold your breath." The chances that any chain letter will ever be considered acceptable for posting to the Misty list is pretty remote. Also, on the subject of the last posting of a chain-letter, please don't castigate Crescent Moon on list for it. She's already heard from a member of the Council and is currently enjoying the many benefits of having joined the Order of the Drifting Ashes. So, let's just let it go, okay? Thanks. I liked them pretty well, liked Sight way way better than Flight, because Flight was a little too much for me as it was told by a kid's pov. But he grows up, and it improves. It talks a lot about the magic problem and about the slow steps back to normalcy. If there is such a thing. There's a quote in Oathbound that will blow the two-diety system to hell. Sorry. When Tarma and Keth are battling the demon (Thalhkarsh, or somethin like, you can't possibly expect me to spell that) he says taht Tarma's goddess can't help her because he's almost a god and it is forbidden for deities to war. That certainly implies that there are more than just the two, since as consorts they would hardly make rules about that sort of thing. And what about plalces that worship more than two gods/godesses? Kero's family, for example, believed in three godesses that weren't faces of one. The Shin'a'in believe in four faces of their god and goddess, but Kero implied that they were different totally, not just facets. Ta, that's enough from me. Go gentle! I would imagine so. I mean a tornado is just where a high pressure and low pressure (warm and cold front) meet over an area. If I remember my elementary science classes right. Since this is the case, any place that has seasonal weather would have tornadoes. The less changes in the weather patterns for a year the less likely tornados are going to hit. I mean how often do you hear of tornadoes in California or Maine, where there is less likely to be drastic changes in the weather from month to month, unlike the mid west where they have all four seasons. Of course here I am applying real life to a fantasy world where physics (or whatever) don't really amount to a hill of beans. => - Ellevaranachai Shay'Nara'Val Herald Trainee, but Bard wannabe => Rethwellan by Nature, Chosen by Virtue ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 May 1999 17:09:41 -0400 From: "Tanya Evans" To: Subject: Re: [misty] Tornadoes and Loved Ones Message-ID: <001b01be9672$6d9a00c0$23040618-+AT+-baycty1.mi.home.com> Sorry I did this in two parts, but I decided to through in something about Velgarth oceans too. I think you also have to have *large* land masses as well, because Europe just doesn't get tornados, even though we have seasonal weather (although I don't mean in the U.K., where the weather does from cool and rainy to warm and rainy, but more like Germany or Poland, where they get rain, sun and snow in the (more or less) appropriate seasons. But from what I remember of ML's geography, White Gryphon was on a sea coast (call it Washington state or France), while Charliss' Empire is on the Salten sea (call it DC or next to the Black Sea). That would make it possible, by analogy, for Karse, Rethwellan and Ceejay to have some sort of continental-type climate. David J. It seems to me that the reason she left is because Karse didn't _need_ her any more. The reason that Northeast Oklahoma is called "Tornado Alley" is that all the necessary components of tornadic storms come together on a regular basis (usually in the spring). Among other things, you need extremely powerful winds, two high-energy fronts coming together in just the right way, and the jet stream above the storm system (this isn't absolutely necessary for small erratic tornadoes, but it is necessary to have a "tornado season"). If you are interested, there's an excellent article in National Geographic from several years ago (about 6, I think). Anyway, it's possible that Valdemar doesn't ordinarily have tornadoes. Without knowing a great deal more about the weather patterns of Velgarth, and specifically the continent where Valdemar is located, it would be impossible to predict. However, it's pretty probable that Misty does not envision it as a place with a "tornado season," or she would have written it into the book. Anyone who lives in Oklahoma can tell you tornado season is not something you don't notice. Even the most blase' person in the state gets a little hyper-conscious about the weather when they feel a storm blowing in.
