I had planned to go to a concert in Kansas City tonight but my friends and I were just starting when a tornado warning was anounced. We spent almost an hour underneath a highway overpass as the hail and the tornado went over our heads. I've never been so scared in my life. It wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't already been through several tornadoes last night. I was in Wichita on the university campus when those killer twisters touched down. I spent the majority of the night in the student union listening to weather reports. I didn't realize just how close the tornadoes were to me until I watched the news this morning. To put it bluntly I have had enough of storms to last a life time. Wichita hadn't been hit in awhile I just can't believe how much destruction they did. Thank what ever deity of your choice that no one that I know was hurt. I just feel so bad for everyone who lost someone they love or who lost their houses last night. Well after that rant I better have some form of obMisty so here it is Given that the Tayledras can and do manipulate the weather could the lack of tornadoes, in their areas at least, be because of Magic? From the description of the Shin'a'ins' Plains I would think that they at least would be prime targets for Tornados. Actually the only time I can think of when Misty mentions tornadoes is in Jinx High when that Goddess who was asleep under Tulsa began to awake and her dreams set off a bunch of twisters. In one of the choruses (the one called "Behold the Lamb of God") the whole song is talking about sheep. One line that they say over and over is "Oh we are like sheep", or "We like sheep", or something like that. It was kinda hard to understand, but it was definitely about sheep. Anyway, I thought you all might get a kick out of that. I'm refering too the talk about tornadoes. I haven't heard anything about the tornadoes here in Denmark, so please remember to include some facts when you are refering to something that happende locally, and which probably won't make the international news. As far as I understod, there have been some particullar nasty tornadoes this year, some pretty close to Misty's home, is that correct? About tornadoes in Velgarth: Since so many can use magic, it seems likely that the tornadoes can be sstopped magically in areas prone to have tornadoes, which it seems like none of the know countries and areas are. About the sea: I can't recall there being any mentioning of the sea in the books, but there have to be some, and I agree that there would have to be fantastic underwater creatures and things like underwater cities, even entire civilizations. Now that would be interesting to hear about. Hurray! Someone else has decided to pop up the question of whether Velgarth has natural disasters or not! Yeah, I know that sounded extremely perky, but this was something that has been bugging me for a while. Despite the fact that this IS a fantasy, I believe that this world WOULD'VE obeyed the laws nature places upon our planet. I mean, consider the heat that the Shin'a'in live in during the summer time, and also consider the fact that they live on a plain. Guaranteed they would have tornadoes. Or flooding in Valdemar! Heaven knows we hear all about that in Manitoba. This is just something that irks me with fantasy authors (I'm also criticizing myself here) don't bother with, but then again I guess they can't worry about weather anomalies throughout their entire story. Speaking as on who grew up in Iowa (where the tornado season is a bit later than in Oklahoma but just as fierce) I find that doubtful. A mage *might* be able to disrupt the conditions required for tornadoes to form if he/she acted early enough but the amount of energy involved in stopping one already fully fledged would be staggering! Also, since not every spring/summer thunderstorm *will* spawn major tornados but most of them *might* do so, our poor mage(s) is/are going to spend several months of the year utterly wiped out not to mention all the collateral damage all that mucking about with the weather would cause! btw, for the file of "why are news people so stupid" I heard an interviewer this AM asking a man who studies tornadoes if he wasn't afraid of his job ***after*** he'd explained to her that he was careful to stay upwind of the the things. The Shin'a'in believe in four faces of their >god and goddess, but Kero implied that they were different totally, not >just facets. hmm......good points, all of them. But let me try to argue against them anyway. :) (I'm not strongly in either camp, I just like to argue. :) ) About Thalhkarsh (that's my concept of the spelling and I'm sticking to it! :) ) a few things to consider. Maybe there are lots of little "godlet" kind of gods running around, but only 2 really, really big gods/goddesses running around. And maybe the big goddess doesn't interfere with the little gods for some reason. Ok, that's the weakest of my theories. Next theory. Maybe Vkandis and the Star-Eyed have both been consolidating their power bases slowly, for eons, gradually turning other gods and goddesses into "aspects" of themselves, and causing people to gradually lose faith in other gods and now they are the only 2 left..........hmm, that seems a little malignant........finally, who says that Thalhkarsh was telling the truth? It wasn't exactly like he made a point of always telling Tarma and Kethry the truth or anything. If he thought that it would help him to tell them that, I bet he would have. How were they going to prove him wrong anyway? Or he may not have known either. Who knows, now I'm just babbling. And I think Kero's people had more of goddess with 3 faces thing than 3 goddesses, because they seemed to think that it was ok to mostly just worship one of them at a time, as Kero's father put up a statue to Agnetha, with only little symbols for Agnira and Agnoma. One would think that if these were really 3 separate deities, he would have been worried about honking off the other 2 by slighting them so, but if they were just facets of the same deity, then it would be ok. At least, that's my opinion. Ok, now I'm REALLY babbling.... oh, and the who-would-you-like-to-hear-more-about thread, I'd like to hear about Stefen's life after Vanyel died. But I'm a little nuts over anything having to do with the LHM books, so maybe that's just me. :) also, on the Oceans thing, I see the seas as being fairly ordinary, unless the mage storms intersected the seas somewhere. It seems to me that Velgarth is supposed to be a fairly "normal" world except with magic, psionics and assorted mage-created creatures and mage-storm-created creatures. Unless, of course, some mage from Around the Time of Urthro decided that sea life would be a pretty neat thing to mess with, which is of course possible... but no sea creatures of that kind ever seemed to have come ashore in White Gryphon or anything, so I guess they must be either keeping out of sight or in a different part of the Ocean. But I kind of feel that if Misty wanted to have magical sea creatures in Velgarth, she would have done something with it by now. But I could be wrong. Wow! This is a long braid! I'm going to stop now, before EVERYONE falls asleep...:) May squirrels never take a liking to your teeth, L.J. Message-ID: The Typodragon shuffles over with an enormous cup of coffee and curls up in the post-exam crashing area, ready to rejoin the world beyond the textbooks. Tanya and Cennydd, among other people, were talking about tornadoes. I'm trying to remember from class, but doesn't the terrain have a lot to do with how far tornadoes move across the land, once they form? I mean, we have sporadic tornadoes in Georgia, but they usually skip Athens - I've been told that the foothill topography tends to break up tornadoes & other severe weather, and spare the valley area. The 'Tornado Alley' areas are usually very flat spans without many mountains or hills to get in the way, right? Anyway, my point to this would be that it seems certain areas of Velgarth would get more action than others. I wonder whether they get a lot of severe weather on the Dhorisha Plains? Oceans - Possible spoiler for...er..._Black Gryphon_, I think. And maybe parts of the _Storms_ or _Winds_ series... * * * * * * * * * * * * On the subject of oceans - I thought I remembered reading that Lake Evendim was actually an inland sea that formed the same way the Dhorisha Plains did, when Ma'ar's castle blew up. Considering how magic power on the loose tends to affect things, i.e., generally weird creatures in the Pelagiris Forest, strange mutant monster thingies left in the wake of mage storms, I'd bet there are some pretty interesting things growing down there. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Bomb threats - The building where I work was evacuated today while they got rid of some jury-rigged bomb someone'd so kindly left. Y'know, I sometimes think the world is going quietly mad. I've wondered a lot lately what a person has to have inside them (or what they must be missing) that makes it okay to risk the lives of a bunch of *children*! For God's sake, there was a kindergarten building just on the other side of the greenhouses, and less than a couple hundred feet away. Add that to the more obvious danger to a bunch of college kids taking finals, and a lot of professors, staff, and scientists doing their jobs. I don't understand this, any more than I've understood any of the recent bad stuff going on. And I'm not a pacific person by any means. I may not go looking for violence, but I don't believe that all problems can be solved with words and warm fuzzies either (at least, not in this imperfect world.) Still, there's something about random violence that I cannot seem to get my mind around. Can anyone imagine feeling hatred so profound that it made innocent people's lives that worthless? Or maybe not hatred at all - just boredom, or despair. To me at least, that's a lot more terrifying than the 'device' itself. Enough rant. Happy Cinco de Mayo sheep to all. - Typo ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 May 1999 19:10:54 EDT From: Ardath6-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Tornados, etc.. Message-ID: Just a few very brief answers here... Absalon queried: <> That's the essential truth to it, yep. REALLY nasty tornadoes.. and lots of them. I heard that there were about 76 of them spawned by the storm cells that passed through a couple days ago. And one of them was an F5 level with a half-mile wide funnel cloud.. Entire neighborhoods were completely levelled by that one. It was really awful to hear about that on the news. L.J. Thompson asked: <> I'm not sure about that. Although I thought Wichita got hit worse than anywhere else in Kansas.. but I could be wrong. It's been known to happen with disturbing regularity! David H Tiffany commented: <> Maybe she's seen Twister. What a movie. Could be one of the greatest comedies ever made. Or maybe it was supposed to be a parody of reality? I can't believe the creators could have been *serious* about that movie.. And about Valdemar and tornadoes.. I just figured it was supposed to be a European-type place. A few here and there, maybe, but nothing really noteworthy. L.J. Thompson also said: <> I want to hear more about Stefen, too! Stefen is fantastic!! He's one of my all-time favorite Misty characters. In case you couldn't tell. To Kalistia: You're quite welcome for the gift! I'm glad you like it so much. :) Ardath Summerstorm Proud member of the OOUH: Vikteren, Snowstar, and Hydona!!!
