Message-ID: Alinea Songwind said: <> So you want to hear about Vikteren, eh? Muhahahahahahahahaha..! Er, I mean, I'll be glad to give you some info on him. Ahem. Vikteren was a young mage who was supposed by most people to be Journeyman class, but was actually "a full Master mage at the least". However, his teacher never passed him up to the next level because he didn't want Vikteren to get sent out on the front lines of the war and get slaughtered. Vikteren had longish "carrot-colored" hair and was generally thought to be "one of the coolest heads in the mage-corps; he prided himself on his control under all circumstances." He has a great sense of humor, and he's one of only two mages that can whistle (Urtho being the other one). Vikteren also has various other talents; for instance, he's able to do a little Healing, he knows some farrier-work, and he learned how to pick lock spells from his teacher, who was a Lockmaster. Vikteren says that he knows 76 different lock-countering spells, and he puts these skills to good use when he helps Skan, Drake, Tamsin, and Cinnabar steal the gryphon fertility spell from Urtho. Towards the end of the book, Vikteren helps keep everything organized and prevents people like Amberdrake from falling apart emotionally and panicking. He also aids in lessening Urtho's hallucinations and pain brought on by the miranda-thorns. And if that weren't enough, he keeps the final Gate from collapsing until Skan can get through it, even though only Adepts are supposed to be able to build and hold Gates by themselves. And there you have it! Vikteren the amazing and incredible and all-around wonderful! Three cheers for Vikteren!!! *grins and nods semi-apologetically to Alinea and everyone else, including those people whose eyes have glazed over* Okay, that's probably way more than anyone ever wanted to know about Vikteren.. but hey, he *is* one of my personal Unsung Heroes! It's my duty to make sure that his praises *are* sung, and that everyone has way more knowledge about him than they could possibly need! Feel grateful that I spared you all the chapters that he appears in and every single page on which there's even the slightest reference to him! Or something to >that effect. Correct me if I'm wrong. => Right you are, but the trouble with inanimate [well, mostly ] things is that they can be nicked or quietly hidden away and officially forgotten about by a ruler who wasn't sung for but wants to be king anyway. So it's not a foolproof way of keeping Bad Guys off the throne...same with the Hardornen kings having to be good rulers because they were earthbound - IIRC one of the Winds books [i don't remember which one at all, let alone correctly] says that neigther Ancar, Alessandar or the one before that had been earthbound. The good thing about Companions is as well as psychological insights, they have sharp hooves! Although i've always thougth that in the 1300 yars between the Foundign and Selenay's reign surely SOMEONE could ahve formulated a plot to get rid of the Herald-controlled government - like if Evil Thanel had been smarter and more practical, and if he'd struck everywhere at once with irresistible force [magery, regular explosives, you name it], bye bye Companions, Heralds and good government. My mind isn't working too well at the moment so i'm starting to babble, but i ahve one more thing to say - i was VERY bored in my maths class today, so my fellow-misty-fan maths friend and i both let our minds wander and came up with a new Gift which we think would be very amusing...she says she has a sort of bubble around her in which the laws of physics don't work. This is an observable phenomoenon - she'll be doing an experiment exactly right, but it will come up with a REALLY strange answer. Then as soon as she moves away and lets someone else ahve a go it starts working. anyway, to get to the point we figured out how she does that according to the Laws of Misty. Her Gift-part of her brain project her desire to be perverse and annoying, and negates the laws of physics. [Like i said, we were /very/ bored.] but just think what the Heraldic Collegium could do with that - she could negate gravity and people could lift heavy objects with a single finger, she could make light bend so people could see round corners, she could be very useful! By the way, if you've scrolled down and skipped my mumblings, i forgive you. May sheep-cookies of thy desired flavour and topping appear before you, and may a warm, woolly sheep gambol in and sit on the feet of those who are suffering winter at the moment, Shadowlight ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 May 1999 06:44:58 PDT From: "Kristjan Wager" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: velgarth governments and incoherent mumblings Message-ID: <19990507134459.78160.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Hi Listsibs >Ellevaranachai wrote: > >IIRC it was stated in one of the Tarma & Kethry books that 'The Singing > >Sword' is the final decision on who gets to be ruler there. Yes, or maybe there sometimes no candidate who are fit, as defined by the sword, for ruling, and people have to make do with whomever seems best of the failed candidates. It could be like Richard I, who only was considered a good king because of his brother John Lackland, but who otherwise probably would have been considered a bad king. Mel wrote about starwars spoilers: well I have to disapoint those who really wants to talk about it, you have to wait till after August, when it shows in Denmark. The first who spoils it for me, will have a visit from me in RL, and there will be sheeps involved - enough said.
