It just popped into my head one day while reading one of the List's more heated arguements.*g*). Styx, for once without a comment, strolls over and sits in her lap. "Sorry all, but no soapbox today. I'm much to lazy!"* Shadowlight wrote: >>Although i've always thougth that in the 1300 yars between the Foundign >>and Selenay's reign surely SOMEONE could ahve formulated a plot to get rid >>of the Herald-controlled government - like if Evil Thanel had been smarter >>and more practical, and if he'd struck everywhere at once with >>irresistible force [magery, regular explosives, you name it], bye bye >>Companions, Heralds and good government.<< But I think that the Heralds, the Companions, or both, would have had some Foresight and stopped that kind of plan in it's tracks. Or at least hindered it a lot. Alberich's Foresight picked up the planned asassination of Selenay, and that was nowhere near the magnitude of a plan to destroy the entire government. Plus, they're (Heralds, Companions, and other champions of the current government) too widespread, and I don't think the people would have really stood for it. I mean, the people _like_ the current government, because there _is_ a system of checks and balances, even though there is a monarchy. Am I making any sense to anyone? I'm almost confusing myself...... :That's _not_ that hard, Li'nia.: "Shut up, Styx!!" And OT, IIRC, I've already thanked our Listmistress for her warning to not post Star Wars spoilers on the list. But I just want to thank everyone else in advance for obeying her request. Like many of us on the list, I'm not in the U.S. right now. I'm in Korea, and I have absolutely _no_ clue when I'll be able to see it. Death-by-chocolate sheep to all!!! I have been reading the mage storms series- book two since my new shipment from amazon came yesterday-and all is going along just fine ...however... who *are* the "fourty little gods" that Grand Duke Tremane mentions repeatedly? Are they any gods on particular or just a saying like: ""by the gods"? Just thought I'd ask...and best to do it at 2am so I can blame the irrelevance and stupidity of the question on sleep depravity... (not) Until I sleep again... In the Empire There is not really much religion, but the emperors etc. are considered deity to an extent, 100 is just a round # to use and swear by. The exams are stealing up on me, and my chinese ain't that good so i gotta practice practice practice... sheesh... hey, you know how so many chinese idioms can get reflected into those rusty shin'a'in proverbs? *g* and they wonder why i grin in class... anyway, in response to your qn Night Eagle, I believe it's just a "by the gods" kind of expression... though the 40 li'l gods bit seems a bit long doncha think? I had the impression that the Empire had an emperor=god kinda religion... sorta like with Rome and Caligula et al... Hmm, one line responses: Valdemar is a meritocracy, with divine help along the way. Rethwellan is aided with a singing sword. Iftel appears v. religious. who knows what the Northern Barbarians are up to And I haven't heard from Seejay at all... let alone the Haighlei.. do you think they got incorporated together? I recall this guy in Kero's merc company who's really dark, and he hails from areound Seejay? ah well... oooh! you guys must pick up Anne Bishop's books on the Black Jewels... so far I think the first 2 books have come out... Daughter of the Blood and Heir to the Shadows. they are really good. But I must warn the more religious list sibs that the protagonists are named Saetan, Daemon, Lucivar, and Jaenelle (Jaenelle?)... hehehehehe.. .really cool IMO... :) the story's kinda nice too. ;p as you can see, my mind's kinda jumbled up. guess it's the testwork... oh well.. *after the manic mumbling, Shadowblade fades back into the shadows with a yell of "Sheep!" and a few giggle bubbles tossed out for the list sibs to taste...* ARGGH! (if you will notice, somewhere around Storm Rising, it changes and they start referring to the "100 little gods" instead of 40.......*shrugs don't ask me!)
