Actually the first draft already exists at www.angelfire.com/wa/Absalon I would like to get more URLs, and would also like to add the URLs of the different orders, so mail me PRIVATELY with all of them. Well the obmisty: Does anyone have any idea of what the differences in the schools of magic are. Áre they just in the moral codex, or are there also different types of magic belonging to different schools? Zen hugging sheep to everyone. As far as I remember, in storms warning An`deshina (spelling) was describing to the blues that mage schools were places that a)trained potential mages b)stored mage energy for the masters of the school(assuming they were not adepts and couldn't access nodes. From what we saw of the white winds, blue mountain schools, it seems to be based upon philosophical beliefs. On monarchies, while I really doubt that misty would have any princess needing rescue, monarchies are a fairly historical form of government for any pre-industrial society. Valdamar reminds me more of a constitutional monarchy than an absolute one. Plus in a fantasy setting with firecats, companions, avatars+goddess sworn, and king choosing swords, what place does a case of slovadon malosavich (he was elected!!!!!) have? Or a communist society(assuming you could get one to run for long enough)? Tanya Evans wrote Shin'an'in or Taleydras (hope I spelled those right) could hardly be considered a monarchy. I agree, as to what each are... Shin'an'in: clan structure, loose confederation overall. Taleydras: confederation of independant villages, with a village councle I dont know what names to put to these. Katie McQuage wrote: I've always been throroughly ashamed to be an American. We suck. Well, they wouldn't necessarily have to be split personalities. Humans (and perhaps gods) present different faces in different social situations. For example, you probably act differently around your friends than you do around your parents. And you probably act differently around your best friend than around someone you don't know that well. But all those faces you present are you. Although the diety list is too long to suggest there are only two gods (one male and one female), it could be that several are different faces (like the four faces that Tarma had in the tent) of the same god or goddess. Just a thought. > > > I'm under the impression that the Companions, although they know a bit > more than mortals, don't know everything. The fact > that the Shin'ain goddess is possibly just another facet of their own > deities doesn't really seem to fall under "necessary"knowledge. I quoted all of this because I found all of it interesting and plausible. I also wonder if the companions are given/told the basics, and it's their experience as companions that gives them the knowledge of what to do. Okay, to draw a parallel here - say there's a job out there that you are hired to work on - let's call this job "diety/human nondirect interface". The job description is mainly "do other jobs as assigned", but expects you to have certain skills before you start. You have those skills, either have or are given some very basic background information, and then let lose to perform your job. Most of what you really need to know to do your job you pick up as you do your job. Until you come to a situation, you can't know what to do about it exactly - you draw on skills and experience. The more experience you have, the better off you'll be - and the skills will come (hopefully) from the experience. I'm not sure if this is making sense -- but it explains a little bit why Gwena was kinda inept. "She has grass-eyes!" "And sunset hair!" p. 99, from a pair of rather outgoing Shin'a'in children of the clan Liha'irden commenting rather loudly on Tarma and Kethry's arrival. ;P So both Jadrek and Kethry are blonds, but Kethry is the 'grass-eyed' one that passes her genes (on the eyes, at least) onto her children, which make up that rather attractive core-group. ;P ON THE LITTLE GOD OF LUST: Perhaps one of the Emperor's consorts or the Empress had a rather promiscuous dalliance or two, and either they became the little God of Lust, or their partner(s) did. ;P ON NATURAL DISASTERS IN VALDEMAR: Can't forget the flood that Kero DIDN'T write about!! I shouldn't be having ~too~ much trouble getting tickets! ;P And yes, for all the curious, it opens on May 19 here, tickets went on advance sale today, and when I last checked we had five nuts lined up in the cold and rain determined to get first dibs on tickets. Kudos to them! ON DENVER/COLUMBINE: I think that's sad, more than sad. It's scary too. Columbine was such a beautiful name... Up here in Alberta we had a copycat killing about, oh, a week or two ago. Some nut went into his highschool in Taber, Alberta and shot two students, killing one. My heart goes out to everyone involved in any way in either of the killings. Not only that, but my school's neighbouring High school (I'm in the Catholic system) has a bomb-threat/repeat Columbine massacre planned for next Friday. I'm scared because my school is where everyone will run to. That, and some grade 9 student was caught with a gun at school last week. *shuders* It will probibly all be taken care of and there will be no danger, but I think I may end up skipping the two blocks before and after lunch that day just to be safe. You never know anymore which is truely scary. That, and not next year, but the year after, after I've graduated, my little brother will be entering junior high. Out of the frying pan, into the fire.
