"I wanted to thank Becky for the post in digest 1968.... I think it was Monday? talking about how America focuses too much on youth as an ideal. Yeah, being a teen pretty much sucks, and if I didn't think it would get better, I'd do something extreme, too. Not that I don't blame people that go psycho and kill all their classmates. But I emphatize anyway. "So... I'm feeling real crappy and I don't really feel like reading my mail. And probably won't for the next week or so. But I have something to add. Why is it that out of all the good that Vanyel did and achieved, some people only remember the whiny moments (which don't really add up to a whole lot when compared to the rest). I would hope that in my future if people *must* remember my bad moments, they will at least remember a few of the good. Lets face it, we all have whiny moments (even if we don't like to admit it). So let's take it a little easy on Van. From these statements, you can guess that my favorite character is Van. Runners up would have to be Tarma & Kethry. Ever since I first came across mention of them in the other books and read the words to the few songs about them, I have desperately wanted a story about Sunsinger, Shadowdancer, and Windrider. I think the set of circumstances already outlined would make a wonderful story (or maybe if we're lucky, the first book in a trilogy). I must admit, I like the DT books and the Urban Fantasies. I just bought Mark Shepard's new book "Lazerwarz" a follow up to "Spiritride" and "Elvendude". I haven't read it yet, but I am looking forward to starting as soon as I finish "Black Swan." I also am happy to say that I found MZB's new Sword & Sorceress, hopefully I'll get to it by the weekend. Kristy Lyseng wrote: << This is a spoiler space for Werehunter. That was pretty good. What do you guys think?>> I loved it too, although I had already read a lot of the short stories in other anthologies. I liked the new story about Grey and would enjoy reading more. Hopefully, other people feel the same way and ML will write more. Message-ID: <19990520003311.46406.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla listsibs, Re my ...er...strongly expressed... feelings about international politics: I did post an apologetic/explanatory msg and i don't know if it actually got to the list or disappeared into thin cyberspace - i'm ahving some probs with my hotmail at the moment. [it seems to be having issues with my browser.] It basically said that you-all got the brunt of one of my depressed moods, which, since one of my major interests is politics, international and otherwise, tends to be about that. It also acknowledged that there ARE good points about the US, UK etc. which are too many to count, and i made a random selection from the list of good things pertaining to each cuntry. And i want to clear something up - just because i object strongly to some politicians somewhere and their decisions, does not mean i thik the entire population is bad. People can't help their politicians - there are some politicians here who would do a lot more good at the bottom of a Very Deep Well. And since it seems to be an unpopular topic, i will refrain from inflicting my views on you and keep them for my RL friends. With one exception - i retain my right to take a couple of lines to say that communism is not the opposite of democracy. Dictatorship is the opposite of democracy. a communist government may be dictatorial or it may be democratic. Now, to start off my new leaf of concentration on Misty, i am going to resurrect an old topic - recycled names. Has anyone else noticed that there's a very minor character in AotQ called Medren? He was one fo the servants who invited Talia and Jadus to their Midwinter party. I'm doing a maths project on Misty, finding out the average number of words in a sentece, number of non-dictionary words and so on, which is mind-numbingly boring but i do find the occasinal interesting snippet like that. [I'm fairly sure it's legal, but if it's not i'm sure to be told to stop it in short order.] Also, i can't remember if it was me or someone else who asked how the other half of a Herald/Companion pair died when one half died - another snippet i found was that Jadus' Companion just quietly passed away at the same time he did. It might work like that for younger Heralds/Companions, it might not. And here come a shower of small coins on the like/dislike character thing - Talia annoys me quite. All tht stuff she went through with the Blues bullying her and her family memebers abusing ehr and generally being painfully shy - it doesn't ring true to me that even with the help of Rolan and some good friends once she let herslef open up to them she would turn out so happy, well-adjusted and un-shy. I would have expected her to end up prickly, depressive and unwilling to trust anyone...but that's just my opinion. Two notables on my list of likes are Justin and Ikan. Even in profession you'd expect to be macho, they manage to keep an open mind enough to be platonic friends with a couple of females. And they're funny, they're practical, they're honest - they're just two of the nicest and best supporting characters i've seen, in or out of Misty's works. I'm also fond of Eldan - I have a thing for streaks. Shadowlight [k'Newzealand, the land of sheep, sheep and yet more sheep. Unfortunately, they only come in one flavour. So help yourself, but bring your own toppings.] ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 May 1999 18:07:17 PDT From: "Chris Robertson" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Gifts Message-ID: <19990520010718.45586.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla, i have a question about gifts - when Kethry and thalhkarsh's minion ahve swapped bodies and are fighting, the Unspellable One mentions in his gloating sppech that if Kethry was killed while wearing the worng body, then Thalhkarsh would ahve a mage-Talented body in his possession. Thus, mage Talent seems to be attached to the body. Is it the same for Heraldic Gifts? and if mage-Talent is attached to the body, then how come Need was still a mage when she was a sword? [and could gifts be surgically implanted if they're part of the physical brain?] Copper coins on the Firesong thing - I think Firesong is what Vanyel would ahve been if Vanyel ahdn't been a Herald and thus had his self-sacrificing personality traits trained to the full. And just imagine Firesong's reaction to admiring ballads about him...I think he managed to get halfway to dismounting from his high horse by himself - oh, i'd probably better spoiler this just in case - storm rising & storm breaking S P O I L E R A L E R T i think the turning point comes in storm rising - is that the one where the storms are messing with his mind - and he realises that he is not infallible. And he's off his horse enough after that to see himself as only one part of a group all working together, and that he was no more indeispensable than anyone else. Poor Need - i liked her. Do you think she knew she was going to stop "living" when she volunteered for the save-the-world effort? E N D S P O I L E R Pastry sheep with a selection of toppings to all, Shadowlight, sadly outnumbered by sheep in her home Vale [I speak metaphorically, or at least large-scale - i live in the city.] ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 14:10:49 GMT From: "Wolfshadow K'Vala" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Vanyel and a few other things Message-ID: <19990520141050.41787.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Morning All! On the Vanyel thing, I can completely understand not wanting to make friends for fear of loosing them. Try moving away from everyone you know, just as puberty hits to a place you are only going to be for 6-8 months, and moving again. You wont make friends [and you WILL worry the school administrators!!!!! :-)] Its a way to protect not only yourself but others from the pain of leaving. Now I have been thinking about favorite characters. I think I have to pick Albrect, Karal, and Grand Duke Tremaine (yes even in the first book). They are all characters who are far from their homes, all working in conditions that are (or were) hostile to them, and they all come out ahead. I cant say that I have a least fav. character. All of Misty's characters are strong individuals, all have some personality flaws (they wouldn't be human if they didn't) even the non-human characters! I even like the bad guys. I thought the Emperor was great, and I cant wait to see more of the Empire, even if only on a short story in another... "Sword of Ice" was the title right? I think so. The only characters I don't like are the ones that don't draw any emotion out of me, and off hand I don't remember any. Then again, because they draw no emotion, Im not likely to remember them, am I? Does anyone have a list of Misty's Velgarth Characters out there? Anyway, time for my summer classes! Well, this should be an interesting day. An assembly was cancelled because some sick creeps were threatening students with letters saying that something will happen on May the twentieth. The police managed to trace it back to a desk in Edmonton that had a list of high schools that were going to be hit, or something, and my schools' name was on it. I don't know about you guys, but I think whoever was promising that something bad would happen to my school need some serious mental help. Someone mentioned once before that school is supposed to be a safe place were the students don't have to be afraid becuase things like this aren't supposed to happen. I agree whole heartedly with this. Threats that make people suspicious of others should definietly NOT be happening. <"Hey, Yvonne, didn't this happen at your school?"> **********************************Fluff******************************* ********************************EndFluff****************************** I saw StarWars: the Phantom Menace yesterday afternoon and it was GOOD. Don't worry, no spoilers. My lips are sealed until everybody has had a chance to see it. Although I sympathise with those who have to wait for so long. Sorry. No OB Misty today.
