You can't have a prickly, depressive, etc as a Monarch's Own. Would sorta defeat the purpose, no? And in the middle LHM book (I can never keep the titles straight), 'Fandes says that Mindhealing Companions happen when necessary. Wouldn't surprise me a bit. Nor would it surprise me to find out that part of the "happy, well-adjusted" Talia was because of a bit of... creative memory supression, on Rolan's part. They do what is best for the Kingdom, right? I happen to be working on such a list in web page format. It can be found at http://members.home.com/jamesevans/mine/Pawncast.htm and is far from being complete. As you can see by it I have only gotten the "cast" of MPawn. I've been kinda busy so haven't been able to work on it for a week or so. I plan on doing a "cast of Characters" for each Velgarth book. Karal had a lot of interesting traits and was able (like someone said before) to triumph in an unfamiliar environment. But most of why i like them are just the feelings i get about them- yknow, i cant explain. ----------------------------------------- my last bit about firesong- i think misty showed a lot about firesongs character by both the trials he endured in the mage storms trilogy and alsohow he and an'deshas relationship was reversed. and in the new relationship he started with silverfox, firesong had an'deshas role of the oppressed person who no one understood or really loved, and silverfox had firesongs old role of being the guide and the strong one. i thought that that showed a lot of how firesong had changed (and had stepped down a little from his high horse). ------------------------------------------ S P O I L E R W A R N I N G for anyone who would venture an explanation for my two questions for the mage wars trilogy: 1. what happened to trenor? i know that his role was replaced by florian, but was his only part to serve as a means for karal to explain his past (relating trenor to his brother, then telling of his family, etc.)? it doesnt seem likely that if karal cared so much for his horse at the beginning (looking ag=fter him all the time and paying careful attention to his treatment) he would just forget him. 2. what about those books that ulrich gave karal (one was about hansa)? those seemed pretty important and she hardly ever mentioned them after- and never did after SW. will they be in future books? well now, thats about it for me. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 16:59:49 PDT From: "Brynn/Jennifer Ireland" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: lots of stuff (fluff and otherwise) Message-ID: <19990520235951.60644.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> heyla! i've got a few things to say... first, i was wondering the other day about public education in Valdemar, now that they're going through a bit of an industrial revolution. i know that their "school system" includes, at the present, villagers teaching other villagers, the collegium, and the occasional wandering priest or somethin who might teach you a little. do you think that it might be practical for Valdemar to set up some form of educational system in the future? with their limited communication abilityies and such, i understand the difficulties, but... coments? Well, I took some time to think about it, and I can now type a _coherent_ rebuttal on the subject of Vanyel being selfish for keeping people from being friends with him. Okay, here goes. The reason Vanyel was _not_ being selfish by keeping people at 'armslength', was because he was think of the good of the 'people' and Valdemar in general. _If_ he had had, say, two really close friends that were known to be friends of his, they would've been in extreme danger of being targeted by a powerful enemy. The best way to protect them would not be friends with them in the first place. Also, any enemy who wanted the most powerful of Valdemar's Herald-Mages emotionally incapacitated (which would seriously hurt his abilities in a way) in order to mess about with Valdemar easier could target these two hypothetical friends along with Van's family. This would not be good for the safety of Valdemar. So, Vanyel barricaded himself off to prevent these things. Unfortunately, this does not take into account the fact that eventually, Van would probably have gone "Mad in white linen" from having no one but Savil (and Yfandes) to really talk to. I think I explained it all. I hope so. ~crosses fingers~ Do let me know if I left anything out. One last thing before I sign off. I realized that I forgot to mention a couple of things in my list of Van's miracle acomplishments during MPromise. I'm going to add them now. In addition to what I already listed, Van made _two_ Gates, and, when given the choice between living and dying, did not give into his desire for peace, but chose to return to his life (pain-filled though it was) and protect Valdemar from the Fate that would've awaited it had he not chosen as he did. (Which was that Valdemar would've become a shrunken nation surrounded by her enemies and her people would've come to Death swifter and in greater numbers.) Finished! Yay! I just got the OathBreakers CD for my birthday. Yay! I have to say that I'm not overfond of Leslie Fish's voice (I wasn't fond of it on Magic, Moondust & Melancholy either) but I do like the cd fairly well. I don't think I'm going to listen to it every single day (I currently listen to Lover's, Lore & Loss and Shadow Stalker every day, while I read my email and accomplish various other computer tasks) but I'm not tempted to throw it out the window or pass it on to one of my other friends for their birthday either. :) (I toyed with giving my copy of Magic, Moondust & Melancholy to one of my friends for her birthday, but I decided that I'll try to let it grow on me...) But if Vanyel hadn't held the pass at Forest of Sorrows the enemie's army would have made it through. Seeing as how the leader was an evil sorcerer (sp?), I think that many more of the Heralds and citizens of Valdemar would have died fighting this guy. He was asked to live at that point in time so that he could save Valdemar from the evil sorcerer. Sorry for the the short post, but I've got to leave for work. I was contemplating a few comments made on the list about how Misty says that lifebonding is rare, but then proceeds to have so many of her characters lifebond. My contemplation led to this thought: We all know that the manifestation of certain gifts, or even an increase in heraldic candidates, can be indication of trouble ahead. Could not the appearance of more lifebondings also be the same? Although lifebondings are not easy, perhaps the support such a pairing offers is necessary in troubled times - so more lifebondings take place. just a thought....
