Yes, but my point is that they all still died *eventually* (even if it was in bed from old age) so that line wasn't *quite* correct. This assumption is based on the fact that if anyone from that time period was still alive in the later books, we would have heard about it by now, because it would be quite a miracle for people to live that long. :) So that line bugs me. Having The ShadowLover saying that they'll die *sooner* is fine with me, it's just the *in greater numbers* bit that annoys me. Okay, playing the debate game here ;-) How would having lifebonds help? In troubled times aren't more Heralds likely to die? It's been said that when one of a bonded pair dies the other usually follows s if a lifebonded Herald dies and he/she takes his/her partner with them, that's makes it dangerous for Valdemar, does it not? -- Paige GO LEAFS!!! He also had very good reason to be this way, Tashir's Uncle tried to strike out at Vanyels family as I recall. The spell snapped Medren's harp strings, and killed Josh (who was trying to protect Jisa). I would probably be the same way in the situation. Liss wrote: >What fav character of yours from another fantasy >series would you like to see in Velgarth and why? Well, i know Star Wars isn't really fantasy, but i would _really_ like to see people's faces if Han came hooning overhead in the Millennium Falcon. Which brings me to soemthing that my wandering mind came up with last night when iw as meant to be studying - i was mulling over the difference btwn scifi and fantasy and i thought that although a sf book might ahve sort-of magic _and_ technology, the "magic" is usually quantified and scientifically explained. Like Anne McCaffrey's Talents series. And in fantasy magic works more intuitively. also fantasy tends to ahve national boundaries whereas scifi works on planetary boundaries. Even Pern, which starts off non-tech, has a "scientific" basis for the dragons, and isn't really divided into nations, the Holds are more like provinces. Another deep, meaningful i-don't-want-to-study thought: Does anyone else think that people might go back to the dependence on mages that Vanyel was preventing when he put up the barrier now that it's down? People might see or hear that magic defeated Ancar's armies and think "Right, Herald-mages are powerful and new, so they must be more effective than just-plain-Heralds." And then i started wondering, what's the coffee-substitute in Velgarth? the Tayledras have chava, but that seems more like a sleep-inducer. One more thing [i really didn't study much; i ahve no attenion span] which is about after the Storms trilogy, so i'll spoiler it S P O I L E R A L E R T Now that the Pelagirs ahve been de-weirded, apart from some stray monsters, what's to stop some country marching out there and doing a huge land-grab? That's how Valdemar increased in size between Vanyel's time and the "present" - the border moved as the Pelagirs were cleansed a little more. So for the sake of argument, Rethwellan could decide to move its borders drastically west, and since the church and state seem to cooperate there, the state could get the church to preach about the piety of producing many, many offspring and say that women are subservient and should be kept barefoot and pregnant [it's not as if they share the Heralds' enlightened views on gender equality anyway] and then there would be eough people to populate the Pelagirs-land. Given that Owlflight/sight were..i dunno, shallow is the wrong word, coz they were good books, they just didnt ahve the scope of previous books. anyway, given that, i doubt there are going to be any books dealing with that or similar issues, so does anyone else have thoughts on the matter? Alrighty then, lets see...... where to begin??? On Lifebonds.... hmmm i can remember wondering about the "amazingness" (sorry, i'm at a loss for words, lately) of all Misty's characters, and the abundance of lifebonds and such with her characters. My conclusion at the time was first of all, her books ARE supposed to be...hmm....chronicles of Valdemar's heroes and heroines. So obviously these people are going to have something....special.....about them...(making them book-worthy). and on the idea of lifebonds.....I'm thinking maybe lifebonds are more common amidst heralds, because of their virtues and values, a lot of very "alike" people are coming together, so perhaps they are more likely to have a lifebond occur when they are exposed to so many people who share their values. Oh and my fave characters?? ooooh i just LOVE stuff like this!! I really connect with Elspeth, (hehe...the brat). let me see.....oh and Firesong and Van and Skif and Silverfox, and more i know i'll remember more as soon as i press send.... but my absolute favorite i must say is Grand Duke Tremane....i don't know what it is but i just loved him!! i really loved reading the storm books and Tremane was a great guy, i guess. oh but people that bothered me?? I didn't like hulda, talia, and dawnfire. They just bugged me. Talia was too.....innocent and perfect, Hulda was just annoying, and Dawnfire was just......i don't know, didn't like her..... alright enough of my pathetic ramblings.... -+AT+-----}----- "Would that all troubles are so easily washed away as these." -Silverfox on washing dishes "What's one and one and one and one and one and one and one and one and one and one?" Well let me think for a bit. I've read a ton of books so I have a ton of chars to go through. Ummm....Of non-Misty fantasy series, I think I'd like to see Granny Weatherwax in Velgarth. I have this feeling that she'd be very good for Melles. Besides, she kinda reminds me of Savil. Kinda. Of Misty fantasy series, I'd like to see Kory, Beth, and Eric in Valdemar. I'm not exactly sure why, but it seems like it'd be very cool! Their bodies carry the potential. If an untrained, untalented person were to be put inside a Mage-talented body, I don't think they could preform magic; they'd have to be re-trained. Perhaps they could do basic things, or maybe they'd have problems with control or something. I think the reason why Need kept her ablities when in the sword has something to do with the fact that the sword was created of magic. It was a magic sword, and she used a spell to trap herself in it also. ---------- In response to Liss's question on other authors' characters in Velgarth: I don't know about individual characters, but I'd like to see dragons. You'd think that with all the stuff that turns up in the Pelagars that there'd be a dragon or two hanging around somewhere. And what about some feline-type critters. There's kyree, so why not a feline counterpart? I just thought of something. I haven't read all of Misty's short stories, so if there is something written about this already, please let me know. I'd like to read more about the "wizard lizard" (I forgot his name) that founded the White Winds school. They talk about him in one of the Oath books. I think it's when Tarma & Kethry go into the Pelagars, and they end up with Waarl. I don't know if it would make a good novel, but at least a short story. Ok, that's enough for now :) Wind to thy wings, Lovesinger "Out flew the web and floated wide; The mirror cracked from side to side; 'The curse is come upon me,' cried The Lady of Shalott." --Tennyson's "The Lady of Shalott" _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web.
