A couple of questions in response: First, can stories function as myth (teaching about culture etc.) for a society when the society recognizes them to be myths (fictional, i.e. untrue)? Second, isn't science fiction/fantasy an overly narrow categorization of our modern myths? Couldn't most of our fiction fit into this category? > Obmisty: Can you see Velgarth as modern myth? Definitely. It presents a realistic portrayal of humanity with an idealistic twist; that element of how it ought to be. I just did a project, about popular culture and mythology for school. But I would definately include Velgarth in that... Let's see, what else...? I still haven't gotten Silver Gryphon yet, but I plan on reading it. That is the only Velgarth book left that I haven't read...! Oh, a question. Does anyone else here like the Bardic Voices books? They were the first Misty books I ever read. I just wondered if anyone else liked them too. That's about it for now. Except...who are the 'Singers of Fire'? I'll bet, (being the logical person that I am) that it has something to do with Firesong? Wind to thy wings, all! It has always been my firm belief that Kero and Eldan are lifebonded; major piece of evidence being the dreams during the ten years they were apart. I don't see how they could have communicated in dreams like that without a lifebond. Add the fact that they fell in love really quickly (that isn't definite but it reminded me suspiciously of Talia with Dirk). For Elspeth and Darkwind, I happen to think they are lifebonded, because the story of them falling in love reminded me of Talia and Dirk and Vanyel and Stefen; but that one isn't as clear and I could be wrong. I haven't found proof either way, though. On the usefulness (or lack thereof) of lifebonds, whoever (bad delete finger) said it's to stabilize someone with a powerful Gift is probably right, IMNSHO. I shudder to think of what would have happened to Van without Tylendel/Stefen, or then to Valdemar. Same for Talia. Everyone keeps bringing up Stef's comment from Sorrows to argue against lifebonds; I would like to bring in Kris' piece from AFlight, where he explains that he's never in any relationships b/c he didn't want anything not as deep as a lifebond. And Talia respects that. Later on, Firesong takes a similar position and is heartily condemned for it. I wonder if Misty changed her mind in the interim? I personally like lifebonds, although I'm not one to say other relationships are meaningless. On another note, thank you Cynnedd for the discussion on the derivation of "witch". It was fascinating. caramel-coated sheep to all, Ambermoon Singer of Fire Royal Defender of the Brat _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web.
