At times hotmail will register an account as full, in which case it will bounce (send back) the mail, After a few times of this, Vanyel stop sending mail, so that it doesn't have too many "dead" accounts. There are other things that happen with hotmail that cause the same things to occur, but to let you know, it's a general deal with hotmail itself rather than one or two individuals. --- Alexia wrote in regards to Eldan and Kero not being lifebonded: >>Really? That surprised me... it seemed like they did have a lifebond after all those dreams and stuff... Hm... You learn something new everyday!<< Well, if you look at it the same as you do in regards to Skif and Nyara, then it does make some sense.. the two of them sort of "invaded" each other's lives right after meeting each other, and that was from a love bond. Kero had a very high Mindspeech gift, not to mention her other Mind-image gifts that she received from being used to Need giving her dreams and otherwise being in her head.. having someone that cared for her and longed for her, and on top of that had his own mental gifts... makes for interesting nights :). Oh, the other thing to remember is that those were nights when Kero ~really~ wasn't taking care of herself: drinking, working to exhaustion, etc. Any feeling of desire that she got from Eldan was also in her too, she was just too stubborn to admit it *grin*. A couple of questions in response: First, can >stories function as myth (teaching about culture etc.) for a society >when >the society recognizes them to be myths (fictional, i.e. >untrue)? Second, >isn't science fiction/fantasy an overly narrow >categorization of our >modern myths? Couldn't most of our fiction fit >into this category? > > Obmisty: Can you see Velgarth as modern myth? >Definitely. It presents a realistic portrayal of humanity with an >idealistic twist; that element of how it ought to be. For the first question, we had this long discussion in my class about the meaning of truth: it was decided that truth in a myth is not factual truth, but rather human truths. In fact, the teacher held that whether or not something actually happened is the least important part. Instead, it's how the story reflects the culture, and the message in the story for the people of that culture. Therefore, to call a myth "fictional" or "untrue" defies the meaning of "myth". So sci-fi fantasy is exactly myth. For the second question, I don't think it could be all fiction. I've always really liked sci-fi/fantasy because it's about issues in our world taken out of context. Things are much more clear in a different setting, with all the baggage out of the way. That's why I disagree with people who say that it's purely escapist; I believe it's more connected to our world than much of the so-called "realistic" fiction. That's why sci-fi/fantasy could be our myths, and the rest couldn't. On Velgarth, is that "idealistic twist" the part that tells us how we should live? on other topics . . . I still believe Kero and Eldan are lifebonded. I'm going to cheerfully ignore the author until she provides another explanation for the dreams that I can accept. Thank you once again Cynnedd; I love linguistics. my the list is slow lately . . . . -Ambermoon Singer of Fire Royal Defender of the Brat _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. I think there's a throwaway line in one of the books about her helping/comforting/having students confide in her. She's one of my favorite Peters characters. Obviously, someone who has>never experienced any deep pain or loss is going to be hard put to emote authentically through the characters. However, I think it is for an author who has experienced a related intensity of emotion to give an accurate representation of a situation that they >have not themselves personally experienced. Especially, if they have had close proximity to the their subject (relatives, close friends, etc.). At the end of the day, pain is pain. I think that if you're close to someone who has suffered a particular type of pain you're more likely to be able to write it better BUT intensity of pain isn't always going to let you write well. For example, someone who has been abused as a child will probably been able to write about loss of someone close because, in child abuse, sometimes people feel that they've lost themselves- and their childhood, whereas someone with bereavement is unlikely to be able to write child abuse very well because they can understand the 'loss' side of it but there's a whole lot of other stuff going on. This is not to belittle either problem, but, whereas abuse has bereavement issues involved in it, Bereavement does not have all of the abuse issues. This is just as example and no offense is intended. Re: Kero and Eldan... come to think of it, neither is particularly UNSTABLE, just lonely, so a love-bond would probably be the best for them in terms of what they would want/need and manage to live with. Kero is a bit too strong for a life-bond I think... It might be a case there of one person being 'swallow' by the other in a life-bond of this type... not that Eldan isn't a strong character... but Kero is willful beyond belief- otherwise how could she bond with Sayvil/Savil? I can't help but think that they're perfect for each other... what a pair! Wouldn't want to argue with them... I doubt whether being 'dead' has mellowed Savil any Anyway... Hope everyone's having a nice long weekend!:) Lex ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1980 **********************************
