TantrAs was one of Van's friends...IIRC he was the "normal" Herald who was present with the four Herald-Mages at the setting of the Heartstone under Haven. TantrIs was a later-generation Companion. Tantras is the herald who helps take part in the web spell that Savil and Van set up. He is a cousin to the heir, Treven. Instead, it's how > the story reflects the culture, and the message in the story for the people > of that culture. Therefore, to call a myth "fictional" or "untrue" defies > the meaning of "myth". So sci-fi fantasy is exactly myth. I am aware of the function of myth, I was just trying to portray the understanding of the word held by the vast majority of people. Myths, to most people, are stories or imformation that used to be believed but which we now know to be false. I absolutely and completely despise this use of the word. I find that it tends to be demeaning and ethnocentric, and while I do my best to stamp out this use among my circle of acquaintances, I still have to accept that it is what people will understand when I say "myth". Aaaargh! I still wonder if the modern tendency to categorize mutes the effectiveness of myths to shape our thoughts and actions. Where they don't already mirror our belief systems, I think we tend to distance ourselves. How many of Misty's fans really live out the example of the heralds? I know I don't. > For the second question, I don't think it could be all fiction. I've > always really liked sci-fi/fantasy because it's about issues in our world > taken out of context. That's why I disagree with people who > say that it's purely escapist; I believe it's more connected to our world > than much of the so-called "realistic" fiction. That's why sci-fi/fantasy > could be our myths, and the rest couldn't. But a lot of the rest does function as myth. Romance novels "instruct" young (and old) women that somewhere out there is their one true love, and their identity is to be found in obtaining him. Westerns' central themes are the hero and good triumphing over evil. Mysteries, depending on the central character, either portray the police force as being inept or practically inerrant. Spy fiction is big on the "conspiracy" theory. This doesn't even touch the individual novels, movies, and television series that have gone into shaping our worldviews. Perhaps what constitutes myth is much more subjective than it use to be. Or maybe there exists myriad vehicles for a few central myths. > On Velgarth, is that "idealistic twist" the part that tells us how we > should live? Exactly. It is a desire for what could be but is not yet. Obmisty: What's up with the color blue? I am rereading Arrows and it just hit me that both Talia's tormentors and the arrows symbolizing betrayal are blue. Coincidence? Or is blue a less than favorite color? I probably noticed it because blue is one of my favorite colors and it is hard to see it maligned like this. May you all enjoy life to the fullest, Sara Ambivalent hedonist p.s. Interestingly enough, the fellow who played the Mummy wasn't that bad looking either...When he had skin anyway. Okay, to the point! (Yes I have one, don't look so surprised.;)) While Brendan Fraser _is_ yummy, I don't think he should play Daren. I believe that honor should go to Paul Gross, who plays the Mountie, Constable Benton Fraser on Due South. And Paul Gross is at least as cute as Brendan Fraser. IMHO anyway. Hold on a sec. and I'll find a pic. Okay, if you go here: http://www.duesouth.com/index2.html you'll get a good pic of him. _I_ am currently trying to find a spot for Ewan McGregor. Vanyel was apparently rather resistant to the bleaching effect. His hair was only streaked with white by the third book. When Stefan saw him in Sorrows _after_ he'd died, his hair was black again. And in that one short story in SoI (I think it was called In the Forest of Sorrows), before Stefan had returned to join him (after finishing his work) his hair was completely white (or silver, whichever way you want to look at it). I'd tell you what color his hair was in Winds and Storms, but I can't remember. And you didn't sound like you were insulting him. Besides, "Information brought it back". (Please, nobody throw things ;) I always pictured Skif as a smallish guy, probably based on the scene where he gives Talia a set of his dark clothes to go espionaging around the castle, and McGregor also struck me as a little on the short side ('course, my estimate of short is a little skewed, seeing as I'm taller than a good portion of guys I'm around). Anyway, 'tis just a thought. Failing that, he'd be an excellent bit-part hawkbrother, esp. with that wrapped-hair thing he was sporting in Episode 1. Sorry it's short.
