There has been quiet a bit of talk about characters that we would like to see more of. Personally I would like to see more of Starblade and his mate Kethra. I think that they were both fascinating characters and I would love to see what they did in the new vale, especially with Kethra being a Shin'a'in shaman. I also want to see more of them just because I like Starblade's bondbird Hyllar. As far as that goes I would like to see what happened to Wintermoon, he seemed to have become a good friend to Skif, I would kind of like to know if he kept up that relationship and what happened to him. I know that Skif ad Nyara moved to one of the Vales to act as liasons for Valdemar so a relationship would be possible. Now that Misty seems to be involving more of the old characters into the Owl books maybe we will find out. And speaking of Shamans, now that Andesha has decided to become a shaman, do you thing that he will have to go back to his old Clan and make ammends. It would seem to me that to become a truly effective shaman he would have to face up to the problems with his father and his clan's shaman. The biggest thing here is that I am not quiet sure about the dating of Falconsbane's possession of Andesha. How many years had past...was it just a few or was it somewhere along the lines of fifty. >From the few things that I remember it seems to have been quiet awhile. I really would like to see a book or at least a story about her in the years before The Lark and the Wren. She seems like she would have been a very interesting youngster. Of course, that would ruin her mysticism (that can't be spelled right), but it is a nice thought. Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series - comes up in Dragonquest, Dragonseye, and Moreta:_Dragonlady_of_Pern Swordspoint, by Ellen Kushner For the two series' mentioned, there are no homosexual main characters, but some minor ones. However, the principal character of Swordspoint is gay, and it shows up throughout the book. To add to another thread, the author, Ellen Kushner, wrote a book called Thomas_the_Rhymer; I unfortunately have not had the time yet to read it. another book/series I remembered: Weetzie_Bat and successive books, by Francesca Block. They're not sci-fi; best description I heard was "modern fairy tale". Bit of an altered reality. The fact that these are the only books I can think of disturbs me. I don't know if that says more about my need to expand my reading, or about our society. One note on heterosexual terms and phrasing: a teacher of mine (who is gay) said once that he always, when speaking to students, says "your nieces and nephews", instead of "your children", when that comes up. Interesting to look at our normal speech and realize how pervasive this bias is. I really need an Obmisty now, I would guess . . . I know this has come up before, but I found it interesting that in a place as open as the Collegium Keren was nervous about telling Talia that she and Ylsa were lovers. Also that in such a rigid society such as the Holderkin, homosexuality was accepted and even common. One other thing I can think of: Someone mentioned Prince Kris; it always annoyed me that Selenay's son was named Kris, not Talia and Dirk's. Herald Kris was the best friend of both Dirk and Talia; I would think they would have named their son in his memory, instead of the Queen, who was not at all as close. -Ambermoon (who is now officially on summer break) Singer of Fire Royal Defender of the Brat _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. But her books wouldn't be considered "good literature" by anyone.....I think the fact that many of the covers feature scantily clad women automatically precluded them from that. :) Hmm, if you want to include her anyway, some good books to start with would be Anackire (although the ending may make you want to throw it across the room!), a short story in _Women as Demons_ (all of the stories in the book are by her) called "The Truce" (this story can also be found in the Daw Science Fiction Reader from 1976) She also has some minor characters in assorted other books, which I'm too lazy to list right now. She also has some books with unusual gender questions, such as _Don't Bite the Sun_, which is a SF book in which people change bodies (and therefore sex) on a whim, and _Death's Master_ in which one of the main characters is a hermaphromorph. Anne McCaffrey makes some passing references to gay characters in the Pern books, but never as main characters. Pies Anthony has one lesbian character in one of the Apprentice Adept books, _Phaze Doubt_. In _The Unicorn Peace_ by John Lee there is a very minor mention of a gay character. There were some gender confusions in _The Innkeeper's Song_ by Peter S. Beagle but I can't remember if they all ended up in heterosexual couples or not. As for non SF/Fantasy, there were gay characters in several Chris Crutcher books I read. (He writes YA "realistic fiction" books) I'm sure that I have read more books with gay or bi characters, but it's not something that I usually see as important to remember about the books, so these are all I can think of right now. If you want more information/page numbers of key references for any of these, let me know and I'll track them down. *** end of long list of non-misty-related books *** On another topic entirely, I'm been on vacation for the past few days, and about all I've been listening to are the various filk cds and tapes from Firebird. One thing has been bugging me though. In song 13 of Oathbreakers, Leslac's Last Lament, he has a line that goes 'We were wed by shotguns -- a kings decree" does anyone on this list feel like trying to rationalize a reason for someone saying that on Velgarth, which I don't recall having shotguns? I'm trying to just ignore that line, but I hate it when people do stuff like that, throwing in a funny line that doesn't make world-based sense! arrghhh. And just a little note on the bedlam boys song, Heather Alexander also sings a version of it on the Heather Alexander...Live! tape from Firebird. (Which I have heard way too many times the past few days. :) ) Just thought that some of you might want to know that...:) Well, that's enough babbling from me.
