I have on both accounts, but have never played the game it is based on (Although I used to have a copy for my old Commodore 128!) Apparently, it doesn't really follow any of the storylines, but is set in that world, I have all but the last 2 in that series. There is also Wing Commander: Freedom Flight, which I adored. And lots of others, I have most (not the last two or 3) books and short stories listed on my web site (hint, hint) and am in the process of updating those. At that time Di Tregarde is barely out of college and working in a bookstore. In the later two books she's an established author and much older. On another issue of homosexual characters in sci-fi/fantasy it isn't right out mentioned, but hinted at sevearl times through the series, but Tanya Huff's character Vicky Nelson is bisexual I believe. So if you are looking for a reference to a character who is bi but doesn't let that fact become an overpowering part of the story she is one you could mention. -Derrick _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. If you end up using different genres, A E Houseman had several crises, because he was in love with a fellow student at... Cambridge? Oxford? Some prestigious British University. Anyway, his poetry partly reflects that. There is a lot of homo- and bisexuality in Robert A Heinlein's later books, especially those featuring the Howard family (To Sail Beyond the Sunset, Time Enough for Love, Past through Tomorrow) In Tanya Huff's Sing the Four Quarters it seems like sexuality is very open. It's never explicitly stated, but there are several instances where bisexuality is casually mentioned. It seemed to me that everyone was bi, because you'd see a guy and girl together and then they'd be with other people of their same sex later. So that could work. And I'd like to say that all the relationships I was specifically thinking of were very healthy, although I see the point Adriane was getting at. Di Tregarde: Children of the Night Burning Water Jinx High Unfortunately, there are no more to come, although a book centering around her lover, Andre, has been rumored. I read them utterly and ocmplete backwards because that was the order in which I acquired them, so don't worry about it. No big deal to read em out of order. FLUFF ALERT I bet you have all been wondering about me (or maybe not, but I'll pretend you have) I've been getting sunburnt in Cancun! Woo hoo! Anyway, I'm back and a nice healthy shade of pink, and it's all good. And no, I got no tattoos, no piercings, and had no promiscuous sex. Although I confess that I ca't speak for the rest of my group. ::shakes head:: So I'm happy and I had fun, but I'm glad to be home. Ah, home. A job, summer college classes, annoying siblings. And yet I'm glad. One of those srange mystic phenomenons mere mortals are not meatn to understand. ::grin:: END FLUFF Go gentle! I'll know better next time. hmmm, now for an ObMisty so this isn't a totally pointless post. First off I would have to say my favorite Misty book(s) would have to be a toss up between the Elven Blood duology and the Bardic Voices. Also I sent this ObMisty out a while back but never saw any responses to it, hopefully it wasn't such a stupid one that no one thought it was worth replying to. Cast of Corbies S P O I L E R W A R N I N G Pg 154 (PB edition) Cast of Corbies Did anyone else notice that the Tilsani mentioned in this area is strikingly close the the hertasi in the Velgarth books. ...Like a lizard caught in the middle of turning human... is what was used to describe him. I don't know if this has been brought up before, probably has, but I wasn't around at the time so missed it. Pg 136 (same edition) Magpie suggests to Regina that they should go get a cup of chai. Isn't this the same drink that the Taleydras are found of, as well as others. This is just a theory mind you, but perhaps the Bardic books take place in a far country from Velgarth. Like on another large continent, perhaps? Or it could be just as simple as the recycling of ideas. - Ellevaranachai Shay'Nara'Val Herald Trainee, but Bard wannabe => Rethwellan by Nature, Chosen by Virtue ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 23:27:06 PDT From: ambermoon starshadow To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: temporary good-bye, "no one true way" Message-ID: <19990611062706.70024.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla, I will temporarily be gone from the list; I'm going to Europe for two weeks (yay!), and then Maine for one. I hope the Halls of Mist will still be standing when I return; they seem to be rather shaky lately. I agree that the list has not been the most pleasant of places recently; and hope this trend is checked before we lose any listsibs. Will wonders never cease, I really have a Misty topic. I'm curious how much the "no one true way" rule affects laws that apply to the whole country. Or how much is done to protect the rights of minors. In MPawn, Vanyel outlines how if his father knew he was shay'a'chern, he'd be shipped off to a priestly order and because he was underage there would be nothing anyone could do. In AotQ, after Talia is horrified by the memory she received from Neave, Elcarth tells her how the Queen is working to make those situations disappear, but it's slow going. I'd say the treatment of female children by the Holderkin is pretty rotten, but there's nothing the gov't can do about that. How much are they willing to interfere in the various cultures in Valdemar, and how much are they working to protect those who are underage? Welcome to this current batch of newbies; I shall spare you a proper MLML welcome, but advise you to find some towels. If none are available, nab a passing sheep. In any case, welcome to the insanity and (usual) good-nature that is the Misty list. -Ambermoon Singer of Fire Royal Defender of the Brat _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Well, in my copy, he is actually _referred_ _to_ as Tannim the next day by the 2 main male characters (*sigh* now i'm going to have to try and find the book to reread it and remember their names), and he appears to have mentioned his being psi to Di in their conversation before all the trouble starts. Is this different to other peoples copies? On the subject of words... Cennydd said a little while ago that a likely derivation of Bedlam in "Tom of Bedlam" was a shift from 'Belle Dame'. (no direct quotes, I ran out of space and had to delete :< ) I always thought it was just the same derivation as the old insame asylum that once was in London, which was dedicated to St ?Mary? of Bethlehem, and became known as Beth'lem, Bet'lem and then Bedlam, with a Bedlamite being someone who was or should be locked up in there. Anyone who knows more or other please feel free to tell me I'm wrong :> Ailsa, Member of the Council of Mist, getting sick of this keyboard not always typing the letter e! ____________________________________________________________________________ | Ailsa Reid areid-+AT+-brookes.ac.uk | | "What a night though it's one of seven, | | What a night for the dancing dead," | | (_Les Morts Dansent_ by Magnum) | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1991 **********************************
