That was already answered in the same digest: Tarma makes 2 appearances later on as leshya Kal'enedral, one in WoFate , one in the Storms series, so she died sometime between BtS and WoFate. Maybe even during BtS. And Keth seems to be dead, too. And that brings me to one of my pet peeves? Wasn't there a funeral for one or both? Why didn't Kero attend? Didn't she mourn? I mean, these 2 women were kind of a surrogate family for her. Since Kero is a prominent figure in the later books, there could at least have been some mention of her 2 teachers, in retrospection or in dialogue. That really disappointed me. I had the feeling that PC wasn't too comfortable writing about it, and it showed in her writing. -- Khenta Blaufalk aka Skyfire, bonded to Aar GoIVGG, RDotB ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 10:26:17 GMT From: "Li'nia Stormdancer" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Lackey vs Norton Message-ID: <19990614102617.18226.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla List-Sibs! *Leaning back in her chair, Li'nia stretches much like a cat, feeling fairly relaxed, for the first time in a while. But I'm baaa-aack! (No sheep thoughts, either!) ObMisty: I'm currently in the middle of reading Andre Norton's "Brother to Shadows" (which is very good, by the way), and I was struck once again by her writing style, in comparison to Misty's. Norton has always been very, well, "alien", as far as her characters go. And, yes, I know it's fantasy/science fiction, but how can I explain it? I've always been able to relate or connect instantly with Misty's characters, no matter what series or book it was (not including IIPTNIG). Norton's, however, requires me to shift my thought patterns a bit, to look at things differently. Not a bad thing, just one more thing I love about having so many talented authors out there! I don't tend to fall in love with Norton's characters first, but rather the stories themselves. Whereas with Misty, I tend to fall in love with the characters first. Anywho, that's my in depth observation of late. Sorry it's so shallow! Oh, and by the way, if any of you get to go see the DMZ in Korea, do so! Thanks to everyone who gave me the *right* order of the Di Tregarde books. I just ordered the rest from amazon.com... Andre Norton's books have always struck me as more sci-fi, and Misty's as fantasy. Fantasy is usually (IMHO) more human (whether the characters are actually human or not in the books), and sci-fi is more...well...inhuman. That's why it's harder to love the characters as opposed to the story itself. (I don't remember who brought that up...) Chocolate mousse sheep to all! Well, someone asked me, I think, what my favourite Misty character is. Frankly, I don't know. In the honest truth, I don't really like her characters. True, some are funny, some you sympathize, and there are others that you want to bash some sense into them, but I think she overexagerates on some of them. For example, Talia and Vanyel. Talia, and I remember someone else mentioning this, seemed to be sweet and pathetic. I'd prefer her as a minor character like in the Mage Storms trilogy. Vanyel (I can foresee Flames in the future because of this) appeared selfish to me. NOT because he was homosexual (a character's preffered partners would NEVER be the cause of why I don't like them). If I HAD to pick one or two favourite characters it would have to be Skan and Karal. I can't recall, but if they're both from the same language, then I will concur with the others who say that ke'chara is used for children :-) Ashke, on the other hand is not exclusive to the shay'a'chern. IIRC if the two lovers are shay'a'chern the term used is Shay'kreth'ashke (sp?) and means one who's love is like self with sexual connotations on the word "self" so you understand they're not talking about similar interest or incest, I think that's Moondances explanation to Van in Pawn. dennis-+AT+-jmf.org.ph wrote: > > Hi there, > Something struck me upon the rereading of the Arrows series, and > having not had the opportunity to read anything else set in > Valdemar, I am curious to know if it holds true in the other series. > The heralds don't really seem to take the sentience of the Companions > seriously. But seriously. > Are the Companions given any more recognition from their Heralds > in the other books? It seemed to me in the Arrows series that they communicated very well with their Companions, but as Tantras (is?) said they're not there to solve all your problems. The Companions are like the gods, they'll bail you out if they *have* to but only if you've done everything possible first. Perhaps most Heralds realize this and that's why they don't take every little problem to them. In the Winds series Elspeth takes a lot of her problems to Gwenna, but they seem to hinge on her duty as heir, and the current war with Hardon, so I'd consider them pretty big. Also when she suggests that Darkwind should seek Vree's help in finding a bondbird for his father she says she's very used to asking for Gwenna's help. Also, in Arrows Talia does take some of her problems to Roland but since she can't have a "conversation" with him, you may have missed them. She seems to communicate with him quite a bit when Elspeth begins to avoid her. skyfire wrote: > And that brings me to one of my pet peeves? Wasn't there a funeral for > one or both? Just because it wasn't written about doesn't necessarily mean it didn't happen, and Misty could have plans to deal with them a little more. IIRC there is quite a bit of time that's sort of skimmed over in BtS, and the space between BtS and the Winds series is about 7 years.
