Not that I haven't enjoyed the discussion on monarchies (SP?) and linguistics, but they're not really a subject that I know much of. I am assuming that Misty usus the 'feudal warlord' system in her works for her elves because in many forms of literature, faeries *do* work under that form of government. The English Faeries, for example, often opperate under a King and Queen, Oberon and Titania in a Midsummer Night's Dream with Puck and the Flower Faeries listed among their courtiers. The Welsh Faeries have their King Gwyn ap Knudd, who, after the coming of the Christians, was regulated to a controller of demons and eventually became (one of) the Master of the Wild Hunt, riding around looking for unbaptised souls. Perhaps we could say 'lost' souls, which is why they went after Tannim and Whats-Her-Face in Chrome Circle. They were certainly lost! *G* But seriously, could anyone really see the decadent Fae nobility quoting Marx or giving up their wealth, magic, and status for the common good? That would be an interesting book - a Faerie communist revolution. *G* Somehow I can't see them as a democratic society either - there are too many solitary Folk among them. I suspect that there would be a very high rate of voter apathy and a great many intrest groups running for elections, but not enough cooperation among the elected MPs to form a working coalition. ;P Too much time debating over drivel, I suspect. Like how much popcorn to send with their astronauts. :) TO Joycers: > Hint: invest in towels - now. > mark the tax zombie Too late, Mark!! Perhaps most Heralds realize this and that's why they don't take > every little problem to them. It really isn't such a matter of problem solving as it is of relationship dynamics. The Companion is going to be one of, if not the best friend of its Herald. The need to talk to someone about the problems and frustrations encountered in life is an intrinsic part of human nature, and the most natural vent is close friends. Anyone who is sane will indulge this need to one degree or another. And it isn't that we're looking to our friends to solve our problems; we are simply turning to a safe ear, and one that we can count on to give us whatever valid reassurance we have coming. This is what frustrated me, particularily in AFlight. The only vent Talia and Kris had were their own Companions. It isn't realistic that when tensions started mounting they said nothing about it to Rolan and Tantris, if only for someone to listen to their frustrations. This is especially true for Talia. Rolan was the only person in her life that she completely trusted and felt at ease with. He was her one, safe vent. What could have been more natural than, "Do I really do that?" Problems aside, we talk to our friends. ***DEFINITE FLUFF*** This question came up during a game. All answers and guesses appreciated. No matter how you look at it, that foul treatment probably left him unable to trust anyone or want to get close enough to build trust.
