Gross exagerration on MLML! I'm crushed! It isn't that cold in Canada. I grew up a few miles (or kilometers) south of the border, and I must say I never noticed a temperature drop when I crossed. I noticed Aero bars, but no diferences in temperature. Just because it got cold enough in the winter to seize up running car engines, I see no REASON to blow up parka thickness. SIGH! What is the list coming to these days (hand raised dramatically to forehead). CARPE DM: Seize the Dungeon Master Never, ever game when your older brother is DM. I dearly would have loved to have seized him and inflicted numerous damage points of my own. The trouble was, a bottomless pit probably would have openned under my character if I had tried. I spent my growing up years refusing to allow him to dictate to me and what do I do? Oh well. In between the various indignities visited upon my character, it wasn't too bad. My sister thinks I'm insane, but I love maps. I especially love the maps that pertain to books. I'm slightly suspicious that this is partly what attracted me to fantasy. There is almost always a lovely map attached that I can pore over, the more detail in it the better. Are there any websites that have maps of Velgarth? I want to go to DragonCon too! Unfortunately, I live nowhere near Atlanta. So I will sit at home contemplating the throwing of green sheep. Paige, I probably should have used the term "communicate" instead of "talk" seeing as "talk" carries a word specific bias that I did not intend. Why is it that in the whole Valdemar series, only one Herald had a cold? And why is it that in the entire series, only two _people_ have gotten a cold? And why is it that they can't just have a cold?<< My take on it is two-fold. For mages in Velgarth (at least those of the White Wind type), the type of energy that they deal with is life energy. The more that you deal with life energy, the more you must master the energies within yourself in order for it to flow right. So if you have a weakness or are drained (as happens with mages as well), then you will develop some sort of physical ailment to mirror the magical one. For Heralds, this works a bit differently because of the way that they use magic. It's more for them a mastery of their mind over matter than their mind over the energies within. This isn't to mention that perhaps only the Healers know that they can 'control' the sicknesses that they have. There are more people than two, I thought, that developed colds, at least. I know that there were other sicknesses that went around. It's also the tendency for authors to not focus on the day-to-day information, but rather the information that is necessary for the plot of the book. Yes, it is nice to know that other people can get colds other than the main characters, but it detracts from the main theme of the book (while noting that it adds to the realism of the whole world, this usually isn't what the author has in mind). Plot devices are wonderful things *g*. --- Anna wrote: >>And i hope that i won't intrude too much upon all of you.<< Intrude? You can only intrude with this group if you: A) Don't respect another person's opinion; B) Don't respect another person's opinion; and C) Repeat yourself incessantly. Um... yeah.. hm. I can..._Bedlam's_Bard_ is a combination of _Knight_of_Ghosts_and_Shadows_ and _Summoned_to_Tourney_. It ties in with both the SERRAted Edge and the Di Tregarde books. Really! In...I believe _Born_to_Run_, someone mentions something about the elves on the west coast having trouble, which is mentioned in _Bedlam's_Bard_ (I just got back from hiking...too lazy to go look all of this up...), and in _Chrome_Circle_, Tannim mentions a lady writer that managed to drag him out of a magickal duel between....a witch and a sorceress? I think so...I can't give you examples from the Di Tregarde books, 'cause I've only read one (two more should be coming in the mail tomorrow! I'm about to drive my parents nuts, 'cause I'm so happy!!! I'm getting a total of 6 books! Yay!) Well, you've got my sympathy. One of my best friends' older brother is our DM, but he's a good enough DM that he doesn't take his troubles out on our characters (he goes directly to the source!). No offense intended toward your brother (I have a bad habit of accadentally insulting people. So now I'm paranoid.) While I'm on the subject of DMing, our DM has decided that when our characters die (we're in the Ravenloft setting of AD&D - pure evil, pretty much), they get sent to Teletubbyland. That post about Teletubby scrying is really beginning to make me wonder...they could probably take over the world if they wanted... Zhai'helleva, and many fluffy, cuddly sheep to all! For a lot of the series, Firesong lamented the fact that many of the relationships he had were superficial ones of people only having interest in him because of his looks. This condition helped reassure him that his friendships and his relationship with Silverfox were genuine, and his friends liked him because of his personality. Although, and I think many will agree with me, this permanent injury is not exactly "okay", just necessary for character development and an end to Firesong's conflict over his looks. *g* As for a question. . Is *lurking* a specific thing? Or is it just where one hasn't said much on the list recently? I didn't see it anywhere in Newbie Fest, and yes, I am a newbie. Does Owlsight focus on both Darian and another girl, umm, I think she was the new healer for Errold's Grove? Or is that the wrong one? (Ok that may be confusing.) If anyone has the web address for a correct review please include it on one of their posts, thanks! (in regards to all the stairs! ) And Vanyel replied "well he was YOUR grandfather too!" =) i loved that! i don't know, the idea of an organization that serves to do good for people, a group of people that sacrifices their very lives and souls to helping people really intrigued me.
