The Black Swan is another of her fairy tale-type stories (like Fire Rose). I actually liked it a lot more than I would expect to. It doesn't have a typical ML "build up through the whole book to end in 3 pages" format. There was actually a wrap-up chapter! Anyway, it's a good read. Star Heyla, I was at the bookstore this weekend, looking for a book, and I saw a book by ML that was titled "The Black Swan." I'm (almost) finished exams, so I may have more time to read ... and to post! Maybe. ;P ON THE BLACK SWAN: I haven't read it yet, but Misty's previous faerie-tale adaptations, IMHO, have been quite good. I really enjoyed both The Fire Rose and Firebird - very different books from her usual offerings. I'm glad to see that she's branching out a little more - perhaps she might inject some feeling that's lacking from her most recent Valdemar novels into them. I've found that from mid-Winds on, her books just dont contain that certain I dont know what... And please, for those that HAVE read the Black Swan, if you are going to say anything plot-revealing, please please PLEASE put a spoiler space before hand! I like my books to be a surprise, or at least as much of a surprise as a well-known tale can be. :) Tamlin asked: > We know that those with gifts are usually selected by Companions, and > if they are not they become Mages, but what about those people with > mind gifts like Fetching, Foresight, Farsight, etc. who aren't chosen. I'd think that most of them would end up in ordinary professions and would most likely be self-taught, or, if there WAS someone that could train them, have a little bit of skill in that area. Kero had thoughtsensing and she ended up as a merc, remember. Probibly many of them hide their talents or end up in a profession that their talents could be useful in; ex. animal thought-sensing - stablemaster, empathy - healing, counciling, ect. forsight - weatherwitching, or as a 'prophet' for a village (good time to take the crops in, etc) thoughtsensing - judiciary, public services, professional hermit (depending on how well they can sheild). Valdemar probibly has fewer Talented people in ordinary life because most of them are Chosen, just as Karse has fewer because of conscription into the Preisthood (at least before Solaris' time). Welcome to the MLML! Nice to see you all here, nice to hear from you. I would strongly encourage you all to check out our Newbiefest at http://www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/pers/misty/newbiefest.html which contains GOBS of useful information, like what's with the sheep thing. Just a reminder not to post oneliners - they're hard on the server Vanyel, and to try to braid your messages together into one big letter so that there you are replying to many people's comments at the same time. :) Any questions, just ask anyone with 'Councilor' in their sig! *And with that little (ok long) speach, the Lady of the Water-Borne poofs into purple steam and drifts away towards the hot pools* BTW: Welcome back Brynn! Missed ya! ON THE CfWD ORGANIZATION: Seems like everyone wants to be a member of Canada for World Domination - heck, that makes OUR job easier! ;P But unfortunatly Ingrid, our Fearless Leader, seems to have dissapeared into thin air! BUT, I hate to dissapoint people. So, seeing as I'm Head of the Albertan Division, I could probibly hire people on under the Albertan division until she returns. So, anyone wanting to be a CfWD member, give me a PRIVATE mail at dprono-+AT+-planet.eon.net and I'll see what I can do! REPLYING TO SARA'S RANT ON PARKAS: As a proud Edmontonian, I will say that yes, in some areas (like here) winters only get down to approx. -32C as a max... min ... whatever, but up north in the territories it gets REALLY REALLY cold. Like almost -40C cold. So parkas in Edmonton aren't all that thick, but the farther north you go, the fatter the parkas get. ;P And no, Aero bars have nothing to do with it. Neither do Smarties. Now, Firesong and Vanyel were *very* similar in many ways. That is pretty much accepted, I think. Now, do you think that Firesong's obsession over a lifebond stemmed or had something to do with the fact that Vanyel had a lifebond? Maybe Firesong thought that since Vanyel did and they shared so much in common, he would have a lifebond. Maybe he almost expected it. (expected doesn't seem like the right word, though) Any thoughts? ¤Silve¤ (Hopeful) member of Canadians for World Domination Appreciator of Llamas ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jun 1999 19:52:49 -0700 (PDT) From: daniel wilday To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: another newbie Message-ID: <19990623025249.12862.rocketmail-+AT+-web905.mail.yahoo.com> Fair enough Anna, fair enough. :) _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I believe I've read all his books, but would love it if that were not so. Other than that Terry Pratchett and Anne McCaffrey. i know I really must broaden my horizons...
