I loved reading Misty's version about how elves interact with the 'real' world. It makes you imagine that it could be true. I, too, wish she wrote more about eric the bard. Reading about the renaissance festival surprised me at first. I thought the book was in another world, not the 'real' world. The evil elf {cannot remember his name at this point} was perfect for the role of o' evil one. But he could not beat Demonsblade {? i know i messed up his name, sorry} Someone asked earlier if readers learned more about the occult from Misty's books. I think Misty's & Marion Zimmer Bradley's books open a person's eyes. Many have misconceptions about the occult especially about blood & sacrifices. I am personally a Catholic, but I do know a lot about the occult. And from these books, I am very open to other people's ideas & beliefs. {wipes sleep from eyes} I, too, find it interesting that there is no books inbetween the Gryphon series and The last herald mage series. I've always wondered about the founding (besides what is re-told by talia and the mage winds triology w/king valdemar) Ok, I am going to go about my merry way now. enough of this blabber...Night Ari_anna hopeful nightowl for the Great Spork Empire _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. I think it was mentioned for a future Queen's Own, when the current Queen's Own is still alive and Companioned yes, this was mentioned & explained in mpromise -- van talked to shavri about when jissa would be chosen (age 8 or 10), and that it wouldn't be a binding choosing, that she's bond to taver *after* shavri (king's own) died. so, think of it like a person being apprenticed; jissa would (& did) learn some control about her gifts before she'd be forced to actually act as king's own. ¤Silve¤ wrote about karal not being chosen: what exactly did his not-Choosing-Karal-but-sorta-Choosing-Karal mean? was it just taht Karal was the center of many things and needed advice? or was it something more? , and ~~Justyn EarthSong~~ wrote the > Karal/Florian Thing is just that, a special circumstance... this was kinda dealt with in the storm books (that's your homework assignment! :)) first, florian *chose* karal because he was playing a pivotal role in important matters, he was the *first* karsite envoy in centuries (& since florian & altra chose karal & not ulrich that brings up interesting questions about whether they knew that ulrich would die), and the companions didn't want anything to botch up this attempt at peace. also, florian was acting as karal's guide to valdemar -- karal could ask him almost any question about valdemar's customs, etc so he'd be able to function as a better envoy. now, karal probably could have been *chosen* except for one thing: he'd already been *chosen* by v'kandis (altra), so he was already taken, if you will. and, altra was sent to karal for the same reason that florian *chose* him --> to guide him in these pivotal matters. mindspeaking by florian & altra: they can talk with whomever they please, no gift required (think kyree, dyheli, etc.) in fact, in one of the winds books (#3), gwenna (i think) remarks that sayvil mindspeaks to anyone she pleases, without pretending that she can't like the others. companions drop this facade when required, ie: yfandes mindspeaking to stef towards the end of mprice rainwing wrote about books between sgryphon & lhm are there any books during the 1,750 years between SG and LHM? Is there nothing written about the Founding? , and suzi mentioned mzb's books (marion zimmer bradley, fyi), so i thought that i'd braid the two together --> when marion is asked what order people should read her books in, she gets a bit snippy (not that i blame her) & says you should read them in the order she wrote them (check the copyright dates), because the darkover universe evolved in that manner. i think that the same goes for misty's velgarth books. why aren't there any books about the founding? because she hasn't written them yet/ they're not screaming to be written yet, that's why. i agree that the timespan btw sgryph & lhm would be very interesting -- the founding, even the first tayledras vales & shin'a'in clains after they returned to the plains. i think the reason that misty wrote the gryphon books is because they explain stuff that was happening in the *current books* (winds, storms) --> mage storms coming back, return of the lost clan, etc. there was a question about the eta for owlknight (sorry, forgot who asked) --> for the us & probably canada (that's colonies for you brits!), start looking in ye olde bookstores about the end of sept/early oct 1999. outside the us & canada, whenever the slow boat to wherever docks *grin* seriously, don't know. fyi -- got the concordances for arrows & lhm (check out firebirds arts & craft website -- i think that its firebirdarts.com), was a bit disappointed that they arrived rather mashed (hmph), but then i'm the person you see in bookstores who pulls every copy of a book of the shelf, sits down on the floor & finds the *perfect* copy (hey, given the price of mmpbks, this behavior is warranted!). btw, typo on pg. 5 of lhm concordance: i think in the last line they're listing the reigns covered --> elspeth the peacemaker, randale & shavri, & taver & jissa. taver?!? taver was the monarch's own companion, what about jissa's hubby, trevan? whew. that's all for now, folks!!! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 12:08:05 EDT From: EarthSongW-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: SB, Vanyel, and Tylendel Message-ID: In a message dated 6/28/99 8:53:21 AM Central Daylight Time, DNurkTwins-+AT+-AOL.com writes: P O S S I B L E S P O I L E R < and lastly, what exactly were the consequences of Gala repudiating Tylendel? he was obviously still a Herald, so did it only serve as the thing that basically pushed 'Lendel over the edge? >> I'm not An expert here, But i think it meant that Tylendel "wasn't" a Herald anymore. I've read Winds of Fate and Winds of Fury, which I know makes no sense but I went to find Winds of Change and they didn't have it and I am one of those people that gets really attached to characters and since I had to find out what happens to Elspeth and Darkwind, I just sorta, well, skipped it. And since I sorta stumbled upon the series (literally!, I wanted a fantasy book to take on vacation, I had been wandering Barnes and Noble for 45 min and my mother told me to pick a book, any book, in the next ten seconds or we were leaving. So I closed my eyes and grabbed the first book my hand touched, well actually, it was Winds of Furybut I relized it was part of a triolgy, and this is getting really long so I'll get to the point)So I have a question. In Winds of Fury, they talk about Darkwind's clan, the k'Sheynaand the other clan k'Treva, but on the Queen's Own handout, it says the Falcon Clan of the Tayledras is K'Treva. So what is the significance of upper and lower class k's in the names and do clans have two names (ie k'Sheyna and K'Treva) or how does it work? Thanks and sorry if this is a stupid question! This did originally appear in a Sword & Sorceress, but since almost all of those short stories have been reprinted it will probably be easier to find in "Oathblood". Thanks for the info on Van's spell of forgetfullness, it clears up a lot. For the life of me, I can't remember that. So, it's definitely time to reread the Winds Series. I have a question: How many of you noticed similarities between "The Bard's Tale: Fortress of Frost and Fire" and "The Firebird". When I first read BT:FFF, I thought that it had many concepts similar to the original Russian fairy tale of the Firebird.
