I think what this means is Vanyel's father never had a son in Vanyel. Vanyel was "elsewhere" enjoying things far different from his father. And she would like to start reading Valdemar books. Which one should I lend her to start with? ummm, good question. if i were in your shoes, i'd pick my favorite books (lhm trilogy) & hand them over (or direct her to the nearest library) with the caveat that these book are *my* favorite ones, & (attempt to) explain why. for a stand-alone story (if she looks a bit green when presented w/ 3 books), try by the sword. ¤Silve¤ wrote about the cover to storm breaking, saying now, dont get me wrong, i love all the illustrations that larry dixon did, but this one was a littel strange ... etc. sorry that you haven't heard this yet, but larry didn't draw the cover!!! larry doesn't do the covers -- they're done by jody lee. as far as i know she's done all of misty's velgarth books, which helps give them a uniform design. now as far as larry's illos in the books, they're nice, but many times i feel like i'm staring at a blob of black ink. the repros in the pbks are very low grade (hc looks a bit better), cheap paper, etc. also, vanyel being selfish in mpawn -- when you are aware of his situation, you realize his motives and reasons as to why he is so detached nad i dont see any arrogance at all. i agree entirely. lendel remarked to savil that only lissa saw van the way he really is, that everyone else sees an arrogant jerk. van (i think) developed this public personna as a defense mechanism. it's far easier to keep people away from what he cares about than to let them inside and get *burned*. notice how wary he was with lendel -- he kept expecting lendel to ridicule him -- same way he'd been treated at home. ok, here's a request/wish ---> gimme lots & lots of maps!!! i'd love to have full-size maps of valdemar, karse, rethwellen, etc. even it its just in the form of "valdemar & neighbors" -- fine. i spend a fair amount of time while i'm reading referring to the maps, especially in winds #3, when a great deal of reference was made to the distance from k'sheyna vale to the forest of sorrows. anyone rooting for a guidebook to velgarth, a 'la the dragonlover's guide to pern? the concordances (concordani?) are nice, but i'd like a good general overview of this world. question time --> opinions on sword of ice? did you think it was worth the time/$, etc? what did you think of the stories selected? i always have problems w/ anthologies -- there are usually 3-4 stories that *jump* out at me & i think of them quite often at a later date, the majority that are interesting but not outstanding, and a few that i just don't understand (are they writing in english, or what?). for sword of ice, i thought it was worth my time, mostly worth $, and the stories that jumped out at me are: in the forest of sorrows; v'kandis own; and the first story (sorry, don't have the book with me) about the karsite captain. well, enough for now. later. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 17:25:37 EST From: Freedom Walker To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: More help please? Whether your MUD owner has given permission or not, Misty herself repeatedly refuses permission for *anyone* to create RPGs, MUD zones, etc, based on Velgarth(and presumably her other worlds too). As a MUD implementor myself, I wish she'd give such permission - indeed I applied for such myself, and was politely turned down - but as a writer, and having at least basic familiarity with copyright and such laws, I can understand why she doesn't; her lawyers' usual explanation is that the existence of such would harm her rights if she ever decided to create a Velgarth RPG or MUD herself. However nice a Velgarth MUD would be, I'd advise that you respect Misty's wishes and don't do it, both out of respect for her and to avoid embroiling yourself in legal difficulties with her demon-lawyers :) If you do go ahead, it would probably be best not to recruit or advertise on this mailing list, as it could conceivably cause legal troubles for our beloved Listmistress Mel. Okay, let me jump on this too just to strengthen Muranog's statement. If anyone plans to create an illegal MUD, MOO, or RPG, do not under any circumstance use this list to discuss, recruit for, or promote it. Any such creation is illegal, and the discussion is unwelcome here. And thanks to our favorite Troll for his timely and well-composed response. He said the reasons better than I could have. I just wanted to make it absolutely clear that the above referenced post was unwelcome and should not be repeated by anyone.
